Hi again,
David suggested that it is paramount for us to create and have a concrete structure so that most (if not all) members know their delegated duties and responsibilities. I personally support this because the lack of a structure often leads to two or three people doing majority of the work. I really don't know what kind of structure it is that would suit us, but one thing's for sure: we need one!

Hi all,
can you please update me about the current status of the Wikimedia Kenya chapter?
I have seen proposed bylaws, but how far have you proceeded?
Are there any representatives of Wikimedia Kenya coming to the Chapters Meeting in March? http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2011

Hi Manuel,
We have already submitted the bylaws to ChapCom and are awaiting their approval. I greatly appreciate ChapCom's advice, especially from Lodewijk and Delphine. Sometimes back in December, i asked Lodewijk about when we should expect to be approved. He told me that we should have a look at the draft bylaws and seal all the remaining loopholes and submit a final draft and hopefully ChapCom would give their approval probably 2weeks later.
At that time, we were all engaged in making preparations for Ting's arrival, the Wikipedia 10 Anniversary & the Wikipedia Schools Project so I really didn't prioritize reviewing the bylaws. Since we've relieved most of our burden now, I guess it's now time to review and make the final touches in the bylaws and we'll hopefully submit a final draft to ChapCom by 1st February.
I am aware of the Chapters meeting but I am under the assumption that it's only recognised chapters that are supposed to attend, right?

Hi Abbas,
thanks for this detailed and quick answer.
Of course I understand that the Anniversary - and your first public event! - was much more important than finishing the bylaws. I am happy to see that you have already a schedule to get that part done as well.
The chapters meeting is only for recognised chapters but there have been exceptions in edge-cases, and I think WMKE is such an edge-case. Furthermore, if you publish the finalized bylaws it is likely that you will be a recognised chapter until the end of March. I will try to get an answer from the organisers - though I have already asked last week without getting a response.
Keep up the spirit and good work!

Great progress and thumbs up to all the Team Lead-Abbas. As regards the Kakamega Team. -Lead-Limoke Oscar -IT Guy-Alex Wafula -Paraphernalia-Sarah Osano
David, perhaps your connection with the MP could help us spread the whole project to all other Constituencies perhaps as their (MP's) CDF projects. Then we would kill tow birds with a single stone :) (get the funding and carry out the project)

Impressive work guys! I like the progress made so far. I think Wangai could be the team leader for nyeri since he's [possibly] the only one familiar with the area.

In any large organization, division of labor has always proven more effective and it gives room for specialization which leads to effectiveness. That is why the idea of coming up with a structure is important and needs to be effected as soon as possible. Not everybody can do everything. There are those who have links and are bold to approach people for new networks, there are those who are very good at the field and could be involved more in the implementation of projects; there are those who are very good on the online stuff and could help publish ideas, coordinate events online and spread the gospel of Wikimedia Kenya...etc. The roles as assigned for the pilot project is a good start, and I wish u success in everything.

I recommend working on the structure on the Wiki. That way, the proposed and current structure are documented in a central well-known place, rather than in a particular e-mail message.
If anyone doesn't have a user yet, please e-mail me (or Abbas) with a desired username and you'll get one.

Hi david, We so named the page at the initial stages when we hadn't expanded our thoughts to include the online version concept because the original idea is that we each out to those schools that could not afford the internet costs to access online Wikipedia. However, since we have now diversified our idea to include the idea of the online version, we can easily move the page to the new title. Let me get the go ahead

Hi Abbas,
thanks for this detailed and quick answer.
Of course I understand that the Anniversary - and your first public event! - was much more important than finishing the bylaws. I am happy to see that you have already a schedule to get that part done as well.
The chapters meeting is only for recognised chapters but there have
been
exceptions in edge-cases, and I think WMKE is such an edge-case. Furthermore, if you publish the finalized bylaws it is likely that you will be a recognised chapter until the end of March. I will try to get an answer from the organisers - though I have already asked last week without getting a response.
Keep up the spirit and good work!

Hi Guys, Am impressed by the progress so far(thumbs up fellows). I would really love to lead the Nyeri group but friends am really held in my attachment at Nanyuki. Am really looking into ways on how I can do that. Its difficult to abscond duties or take leave so early. However am looking at modalities on what I can do. We can even work over the weekends if thats okay coz Nanyuki is close to Nyeri area. Other people who are interested(Sam) we can chat a way on what we can do. Thanks.

Wangai, you are the one who knows Nyeri well and we could appreciate the effort to lead the pilot there. I am also starting attachment on February. It could be ok even if we push it abit forward just as long as you find time for it. If u began attachment in January by March u could be releaved from it. I could only accompany u to the pilot and volunteer to be the IT guy, as long as u are there to lead. Please think about it

Thanks.

Guys,
i think the project should remain as "Wikipedia for Schools Project" since we can have both offline and online versions depending on resources.

I recommend working on the structure on the Wiki. That way, the proposed and current structure are documented in a central well-known place, rather than in a particular e-mail message.
If anyone doesn't have a user yet, please e-mail me (or Abbas) with a desired username and you'll get one.
Cheers,

In any large organization, division of labor has always proven more effective and it gives room for specialization which leads to effectiveness. That is why the idea of coming up with a structure is important and needs to be effected as soon as possible. Not everybody can do everything. There are those who have links and are bold to approach people for new networks, there are those who are very good at the field and could be involved more in the implementation of projects; there are those who are very good on the online stuff and could help publish ideas, coordinate events online and spread the gospel of Wikimedia Kenya...etc. The roles as assigned for the pilot project is a good start, and I wish u success in everything.

am hoping you briefed him on what information is required.tell him to remember to take contacts of all the principals of the schools he visits so that it will be easier to make appointments on the days we will be going to the schools.also they need to know so that they can plan ahead as we will definetly interrupt their class hours.
he should not book the day now but inform the principals that we will be in touch soon.

hi everyone.I would really like to know and am sure am not the only one where we stand as concerning the project as at today and what is the way foward. i believe this is a good starting point.
concerning the collision of jkuat guys, you need to inform us.how many you are and when you guys are available.if you form a team and you all agree on the time all of you are available, then abbass will alocate you the region where you will conduct the pilot.so its really up to you guys to meet and decide then inform abbas.
you can pioneer the pilot.we will follow.from strathmore we are so many and we are closing in march,we can do our part then but since this is too far,we need to meet and discuss when we are available to conduct the pilot or another team could do it.
the thing is,WHERE DO WE STAND AS AT NOW.

Grace,
Oscar and his team have already decided that they will undertake the Kakamega pilot in the 1st week of March. Oscar is in kakamega as we speak undertaking the pre-visit. In the Mombasa team, I we shall probably undertake the project in the second week of March. What remains is the Nyeri details.

We can't do it on weekends: most schools are fully functional during the weekdays - meaning that there's a high probability that you won't find most staff/students at the school premises on a Saturday.

David, perhaps your connection with the MP could help us spread the whole project to all other Constituencies perhaps as their (MP's) CDF projects. Then we would kill tow birds with a single stone :) (get the funding and carry out the project)

Hi Abbas,
thanks for this detailed and quick answer.

Guys,I too share Wangai's dilema.torn btwn 'appeasing' your potential employers and the project.not to mention how hard our Internships are hard to come by-the applications, interviews travel....- and there aint many firms localy.my internship is frm 1st feb and the director of th firm sort to know how i'll juggle btwn th internship and the project now that i am an employee of the firm?i can foresee him granting me 5days if i plead-for the pilot in march.i thus am of the opinion that if i dont go for the pilot within now and 1st feb b4 i start my internship,we may have to find an alternative guy.but i will be around for the pilot certainly.its a hard choice..... Impressive work guys! I like the progress made so far. I think Wangai could be the team leader for nyeri since he's [possibly] the only one familiar with the area.

Abbas,
You are the project leader.. what we could start with is a leader for each region that we are doing the pilot, that way, one can co-ordinate the events and participants.
I happen to have sat with the MP for Kibwezi and he is willing to support this project implementation in his constituency...
David.

Thank you David for bring that up,its true we need an organized structure. About the pilot,I think David or anyone else familiar with the coast should lead the coast team.Since Abbas is the project leader, the team leaders of the selected areas together with their team should then report to Abbas. Your ideas please. Regards, sarah.

Thanks for good work guys. I also think its imperative that we set up well defined structures so that we can be able to steer the process in an organised manner. Secondly, i suggest that we tap into the various talents and abilities of the members; each member identifies their areas of strenght so that responsibilities can be shared based on and not limited to such a criteria. During the pilot, i also suggest that we develop a two tier approach in which case we collect content while disseminating at the same time. Such areas areas as folklore form a rich content for online consumption. This, with a view of recording the narratives at a later stage. Tomno.
