For starters, I feel the best way of engaging Wikipedia in campuses is through already existing clubs. Starting a club from scratch can be pretty cambersome. With existing clubs, we wouldn't have to worry about recruiting new members, sustainability of a whole club etc.
Just thinking out loud, what do you think guys?
ps: Oscar, most phones can access that wiki. You should see the phone I use for short wiki edits!
cheers, Alex.

Hey Guys, Since we are going in the direction of having Campus editing "parties",I thought this may be of help: http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/How_to_start_a_Wikipedia_student_club
And since most of us read or emails via the phones, this is what is contained in the link:
*How to start a Wikipedia student club*
Are you interested in creating a community of Wikipedia editors on your campus?
If you believe in the free sharing of knowledge to the entire global community, then creating a Wikipedia Club on your college campus is a great way to grow the community of Wikipedia editors.
A student club will provide a community for students to learn how to edit Wikipedia, teach each other how to edit, and actively participate in the process of peer-review.
Benefits:
- Opportunities to contribute to the world’s knowledge
- Gain knowledge as you access existing Wikipedia articles and create new
ones
- Improve communication, writing, researching, and teaching skills
- Experience the satisfaction of seeing your work in print

Good idea Alex. We would not even need to form a club,we could alternatively have "informal" editing "parties" like Google Map Maker parties where we invite interested students, teach them how to edit and do some communal editing.

Tell me its the Nokia 1680c :P ...i have that too. Thanks for the TIP.
hi guys,
Mayenge and Alex nice thoughts.clubs need to be registered at the deans offices in the respective campus and some other stuff that could be hectic.
Just a bench mark.
Google Kenya are getting thousands of edits from Kenya and yet they do not have these clubs.
They have been using motivation to editors of their maps. These motivations come in different forms and shapes. At a time last year they introduced a map makers competition in all campuses where the winners would win prizes ranging from laptops to food. Those that got gadgets were better placed because they had more edits then they later held a party at the ihub for all the other participants and they carried out a training on advanced usage of google maps.i was in the competition and I only got the prize at the petite end which happened to be attendance of the party.Am not complaining though.
The edits are always on the rise day in day out and they have even launched another competition for this year and I am in FTW this time.
End of benchmark.
Guys this is area code 254 and getting some one spend on internet just to edit something they wont benefit in some way they can feel directly is quite hard.Which is not the case for wikimedians in area code 254
I stand to be corrected.

I second Stephen 100%.
One more thing -- these existing clubs that you want to liaise with usually have their own goals and objectives, so it may not be that easy to squeeze Wikimedia into other clubs' priorities.

And speaking of competitions, Alex and I are in the initial planning phase of Wikipedia Takes Nairobi which is a photo contest that will involve participants uploading images of Nairobi's monuments, buildings, etc
Just thought I'd let you know that we haven't ruled out competitions and we are trying our best to operate Kenyan style (or code 254, as you call it).

My Idea was since most of our campuses have "free" WiFi connection,we could find a few interested students and share with them the editing in Wikipedia.I am not for the creation of Clubs, just some form of informal association where we can get guys together and do staff together...or get ourselves together from the same campus and do editing together.:P
Although I totally agree with your "code 254 theory".
I don't know about other universities, but wifi at Strathmore is not that good, in my opinion.
I do realise, however, that ''good internet speeds'' is a very relative term, and it may vary from person to person.

oscar, invite these "intrested students"as you have mentioned to the wikisat.then they will get to interact with others and probably get to choose if they want to edit at jkuat or with the wider kenyan wikimedian community at a selected place.

Hey everyone -
I thought I'd weigh in here regarding the clubs!
On IRC yesterday a group of us had a really interesting talk about how to work more collaboratively with schools in the context of student run groups. You can see all the notes on the Outreach wiki: http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/2011,_27_April_-_IRC_student_club_convers...
Someone suggested, as Alex did in this email chain, about in some cases simply joining in with similar groups/clubs on campus which already exist. I think this is a great and really smart idea for a lot of reasons, which I don't think I need to put here.
Are there like-minded organizations that come to mind for you in Kenya? One international organization which fits really well is Students of Free Culture (http://freeculture.org/), but I don't know if they have locations in Kenya.
A benefit of a group/club versus a competition is that it is more permanent and consistent: not a one-time affair like a competition. But I agree competitions are really useful tools for recruitment, I am just highlighting the differences.
Best - Jessie

Hi Jessie, I am sorry I couldn't connect to the IRC Yesterday coz of internet problems. I like the Idea proposed by Alex. At the moment I am working on a student start up project https://sites.google.com/site/kwetumapmakercompetition/project-definition and we are opening chapters in all Universities in Kenya, currently we are promoting projects like google map maker https://sites.google.com/site/kwetumapmakercompetition/home and several other programs like internship for students we will go from university to University as from next week to market the idea and if members agree we can incorporate Wikimedia in our programme.
