Waasalumu ,
I hope we are doing great. It has been a week since I asked for your input into the above. Since I got none, I went ahead with the plans for the same.
So Wkimedia Kenya and Mozuilla Kenya had sometime last year discussed and greed on having an Outreach this year to introduce guys to our work.(https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Kenya-Mozilla-Wikimedia-Outreach and https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Kenya-Road-Trip-Institutions)
For Wikimedia, we would hold a few Wiki Academies to show guys how and what it takes to create Wikipedia and hope they will be apart of it and contribute if not make good use of other Wikimedia Resources in their daily life.
So the first outreach is almost here with us and I have been working on it with Alex from the Mozilla Camp and since we do not have sufficient budget and resources as Mozilla does ( I understand they really do have lots of cash for Outreach this year :-) ), we have agreed that Wikimedia Kenya will only need to cater for the boarding and travel expenses for its participants. We are still ironing out the details of hiring or finding a venue. Our audience in Mombasa will include guys from GTUG Mombasa and a few techies and developers in Mombasa and calling for a few students who would make it to the meetup. We have a liaison with the GTUG Guys in Mombasa helping with the coordination.
So this is a call for anyone keen on helping or who has a presentation and teaching to do to step forward (A maximum of 3 people). Tentative dates are March 9th to 10th
Your input is eagerly awaited and volunteers too
Regards,
Hi Oscar,
Thanks for following this through. I can't open the etherpad on my mobile, so I apologize in advance if I ask questions that are already answered in the etherpad.
1.) Out of the 3, how many people have signed up so far?
2.) what do you mean by hiring a venue?
3.) which institutions are you planning to visit?
4.) why are you stating that Wikimedia Kenya is in a state of budgetary insufficiency?
Sincerely, Abbas.

Oscar, it's March 2nd to 3rd March for Mommbasa. there already a page on meta for this: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012
* Who's going: We only have 3 names on meta, however, note that Mombasa will not be our only destination. * Venue: On Saturday (3rd) we'll be having an audience of local tech groups in Mombasa who have nospecific venue. * Institutions: Updates on the meta * Budget: This tour is streached for 3 months (ofcourse not throughout) and having reviewed the startup grant we received, we'll be within our budget for this year. So yah, I don't forsee any insufficiency * Merchandise: The first buch of our tshirts will be out sometime mid next week (Steve, confirm), Abbas, do you have any swag left over. Other than that, there aren't anymore requests made for swag ps: Would really love to see new faces (guys who haven't done presentations before) in the tours ofcourse had more experience in Wikimedia related presentations

Hi Abbas,
Thanks for following this through. Thank you
1.) Out of the 3, how many people have signed up so far? I just posted today this thread with the details. So anyone keen can sign up (on this thread,so far 0)
2.) what do you mean by hiring a venue? ( Uhhhm, We are not certain to get a free venue like we always do in Nairobi to host our participants)
3.) which institutions are you planning to visit? We will not be visting institutions but we will be inviting students and other keen people to the event.
4.) why are you stating that Wikimedia Kenya is in a state of budgetary insufficiency? Because we do not have Outreach outrightly budgeted in our Budget or is it? :-)
5.) have you made any merchandise arrangements? For instance, the the locally-printed t-shirts.
Am in touch with Steve and he informs me that he has the fisrt batch of the locally printed t-shirts.
Steve please care to share more?
Thannks.
Find the details here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012
Thanks for the replies.
I'm really looking forward to how this event turns out (esp. with regards to attendee turnover) since in all our past outreach events, we are the ones who've followed the students, and not the other way round.
RE: merch., I only have stickers left with me (plus lots of plus-sized t-shirts, if that counts).

Hello,
I already have made arrangements to have our local chapter T-shirt by the end of this week.
On another note, I passed by the City council of Nairobi to ascertain the results of my request to allow Wikipedians to take photos around Nairobi on the coming weekend only to find shock on me!!
They told me that I needed a letter from the Ministry of Information and communication. On asking them why? They quipped that I must have it so that it can be attached to my earlier request.
I would love to be part of the team headed to Mombasa for the outreach activity.
PS: There is another invitation by the Egerton University to attend an Open Source day they will be having on 10th March 2011.

@ Oscar , excuse my ignorance whats GTUG ?Whatever that is i do wish the team going nice time , Steve the Open source drive is a phenomenon and like somebody noted elsewhere ,Google, Facebook and should i say Wikimedia ? started on an open source platform ,from where i stand am glad to note that government systems have picked the same ,thanks to the revolutionary minds we have in the policy making quarters ,i have been privileged to work with government sponsored digital villages in Western Kenya and i must say they are loving the experience. i would wish to attend the Egerton invitation as an opportunity to share on the same and listen to their concerns ,keep us updated on the the visit ,

Hi guys,
This sounds more ridiculous by the minute. Do you want to "hire" me as a tourist who's taking pictures? :) Unfortunately, I wouldn't be available tomorrow (Thursday) in order to accompany you to the City Council to get a tourist photo permission (I'm sure that tourists don't need a letter from the ministry of anywhere). But on Saturday, I'd be happy to accompany you (of course, I'm only one non-African-looking guy, so if you have several groups, I could only accompany one).
Hope the photo walk doesn't die on us for Saturday. Oliver (aka BT)

Hello,
I already have made arrangements to have our local chapter T-shirt by the end of this week.

Hello,
I appreciate the fact that Oliver has stepped in to salvage the situation. Your offer to assist us with this is exceedingly valued Oliver. If you will be available on Friday to go and get that tourist permit, then that would be perfect since the offices at the City Council remain shut on the weekends.
PS: Mitchell, Let’s stick to the topics on the thread.

Pity, that won't work then as I have to work all day tomorrow (Friday) too.
Could someone get a tourist permission on my behalf (i.e. in my name) and bring it on Saturday?
Where and when are we going to meet?
Also, I understand that I don't have to bring a camera as that will be there. (My own just broke.)

I'll try and connect with Limoke to meet at the City Council - I hope to sneak out of the office some time between 10 and 12 later this morning (so if my supervisor tries to subscribe to this list, don't let her - haha!).
Let's pray that we can get that permission.

Hey Isaac,
Yah, we have a target list which will focus on the CBD and partially Upper Hill. This is derived from the one we had for WTN. Copies will be printed out to teams on D-Day
And if you are turining up for this, please put up your name on this pad: http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/wtn for planning purposes.

Hello,
So far only five guys have filled in their names at the etherpad.
I will organize with BT to get the tourists permit just in case it might be requested for by a person in authority.
We hope to meet at the Tom Mboya monument at 10:00am where we shall decide which route to take as per the goals here.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_takes_Nairobi/Goals * Basic requirements:*
- Camera (not compulsory!) - Walk/Vehicle to move around/ public transport/ autos are also okay. - Data cable/ card reader for transfer of photos. - Disable on-image timestamps or other data that appears over-top of images. - Please empty the memory card.
*Other activities:*
- Encourage new people from outside the community to join. - This is a team event.
*Do's:*
- Bring plenty of water. - Do not worry about the angles/ nitty gritties of the photo or your camera skills! - Try and take a clear shot of the building. - Note down the list of places, names of buildings that you photograph. - If you learn something new about a landmark/ statue/ building, do pass on the info. It would be very useful to update in the wiki pages. - If you want to leave early, make sure you transfer your pictures to team volunteer.
*Do not:*
- Do not take pictures of people - To maintain a level of decency and also not to breach privacy - Remember that all photos will be used for Wikipedia, hence do not include personal photos. - Personal photos will not be considered for selection. - Do not waste time, respect the time limit. - Do not go into people's homes to photograph. All photos to be buildings/ statues/ landmarks of Nairobi. - Do not take photos where it is prohibited to do so.
Just in case something is not clear, please feel free to ask.
regards,
Stephen.
