Hi folks,
The first of our regular "Last Mondays" Free Culture Alliance NYC meetups
will be held on Monday evening (Jan 31) at 6 PM at Josie Woods Pub at 11
Waverley Place by NYU:
http://www.yelp.com/biz/josie-woods-pub-new-york-2
Afterwards, a bunch of us will walking over together to join the nearby
Free Culture NYU meeting at 7:30 PM.
There should be folks from Students for Free Culture, the Internet
Society-NY, Wikimedia NYC and other like-minded movements at the pub.
Come and celebrate with us the success of the strike back against SOPA!

Thanks,

Tomorrow, on Wednesday Jan 18, Wikipedia will hold a blackout to protest
the SOPA/PIPA legislation in Congress that poses a serious threat to the
open Internet:**

More locally, on Wednesday from 12:30-2 PM, the NY Tech Meetup is hosting a
'Rally for the Future of Tech' in front of 780 Third Ave, at 49th street,
in Manhattan:
http://nytm.org/sos/
These speakers have been confirmed for the rally: Clay Shirky, Alexis
Ohanian, Scott Heiferman, John Perry Barlow, Andrew McLaughlin, Eli
Pariser, Tim Karr, and David Segal.
Bring a sign on why Wikipedia and similar projects need an open Internet to
thrive, and maybe we can also find each other, and go get lunch as a
wiki-group afterward.
Also, I'd like to welcome everyone of our upcoming Wiki-Conference at NYU
on Jan 28, where SOPA certainly promises to be a hot topic:

Hello all,
Last week ago I opened up sign ups for committees and so far only two other
people signed up for them. It is highly important that we have more users
joining these committees as it is highly important for the development of
the chapter as all discussions that will take place that will be
implemented in the stragetic plan. If you wish to sign up go to the
following link - https://nyc.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Home.
I am also looking into venues for the WikiBus to Wikimania 2012. If you are
interested in taking the bus please fill out this form -
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dHZzX3YzeG5xM…
Yesterday some of us had a "mini meetup" and I would say that it was
a success as we were able to all collaborate and discus wiki-related ideas
with each other. Because of the success of the mini meetup we should try to
have them more often, perhaps bimonthly? And they will not be
a supplement of the monthly meetups, just something additional.
And just a reminder, Wikipedia Day 2012 is on January 28th. It
will basically be a wiki conference and I feel that if you are on this
list, you will love it so sign up! More information is located at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/Wikipedia_Day
Thanks,
Peter Coti
As promised, here is a .PDF of the document I presented at the meetup on
Sunday. Remember that this is just an idea on how to proceed on with
writing the actual strategic plan. I will start a signup list on the main
Wikimedia NYC website for committees.

FYI - are there any NYC wikimedians and other folks interested in OpenStreetMap?
It would be awesome to organize another NYC mapping party (I'd come to
NYC for that) and wonder what the interest is?
Also, there is talk about importing some of the NYC GIS data (see
below) though there are license compatibility issues and it's best
that imports don't happen without an active mapping community.
Cheers,
Katie

Hi,
I've been asked to spread the word about this movie screening and I
believe it's relevant to this list. I first heard about this movie
today but it sounds interesting and I'll be there Friday evening. (the
speakers are Friday, the screenings are Fri-Thu except Sun. (1 week
only); see the eventbrite link below for more details)
Thanks,

Subject: Barbershop Punk -- New York premiere
Hi,
I'm glad you'll be able to come to the Brooklyn screening of
Barbershop Punk Friday night! It's a compelling movie about keeping
the Internet free. It tells the story of Robb Topolski, a network
engineer and a barbershop quartet singer who learned that Comcast was
throttling his Internet file transfers…and did something about it.
It's a compelling story, and also informative about the importance of
net neutrality.
I will be on a brief panel discussion immediately after the 10:00pm
screening (there is also a 7pm screening, with a different set of
panelists). Below is my bio, and those of my co-panelists, in case you
want to pass the invitation around. The screening costs $7, and it
should be a blast -- I expect lots of fun and interesting people will
be there!
