Hello Wikipedia data enthusiasts!
My name is Lane Rasberry, user:bluerasberry, and I contribute to health
content on English Wikipedia.* I am writing to ask for help from WMF people
and community allies in drafting and backing with evidence a statement for
publication in a medical journal. The statement that I would like to make
is something like this:
*
*"The amount of traffic received by health articles on Wikipedia makes
Wikipedia a significant source of health information."*
When I make this statement, I would like to be able to do so as clearly as
possible and in a way that is backed by authentication by the Wikimedia
Foundation and probably a bit of data, perhaps in the form of a comparison
with traffic to another health website. I happen to work for the US-based
non-profit organization Consumer Reports, and we have thought about
comparing Wikipedia's traffic with WebMD's traffic, as WebMD is sometimes
reported as being the most popular source of health information online or
in the world. At Consumer Reports we get traffic data from Nielsen, so that
would be the source for comparison data.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nielsen_Holdings>
I need help from other stakeholders from this because if this article is
published - and this is not unlikely because it was requested of me - then
it could be cited by other people doing outreach as supporting evidence of
the impact and worthiness of developing Wikimedia content related to
health. Even if it is not published in this instance the increasing media
attention which Wikipedia health content is getting merits having some
verified statement to share about traffic.
I wrote more about why I need this statement and how it can be reused at
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Project_Med/traffic>
I am writing some individuals in addition to sending this to mailing lists
for the following reasons:
- Dario and Jonathan Morgan, you both are Wikimedia data people and I
have talked with you both about this directly
- Erik Zachte, I talked with you about this
generally<http://bluerasberry.com/2013/02/the-metric-i-want-from-the-wikimedia-analyt…>in
Feb 2013
- Doc James, we both say that Wikipedia health content is popular but
neither of us do this with authenticated data
- Jake Orlowitz, you are managing Wikipedia's relationship with the
Cochrane Collaboration and they also are partnering with the Wikipedia
health community on the premise that traffic matters
- AnthonyhCole, you were asking me for my opinion about what I think the
WMF could do to support people doing Wikipedia outreach in health. I think
lots of people would find a statement about traffic to health articles
useful.
- Matthew Roth, you manage communications at the Wikimedia Foundation
and if you want any input into what I am doing then I would love to have
your advice.
I need this soon - perhaps by October 11? Is that possible? How much work
would it be to make this statement? Can someone with the WMF Analytics Team
and WMF communications help me? Am I in the right forums?
Thanks,
--

Hi Mr.michal.
i am eagerly waiting to attend the meeting you host,im from East Africa and you based on people from Central East Europe (CEE).im waiting from you soon.
Thanks allan.
Hello,
I have some stories! I can provide more details on request.
Wikimedia New York City is doing the following:
It is a supporter of the Wikipedia Education Program in the United States,
hosting regular presentations at universities and encouraging professors to
incorporate Wikipedia into college classrooms
It is hosting the first US Wikipedia national conference next spring 2014.
Previously, the New York City annual Wikipedia Day event has attracted
100-150 people in each of the past three years. Next year will be the first
event which is for people in nationwide.
Wikimedia DC is doing the following
Wikimedia DC is the major supporting chapter for cultural partnerships in
the GLAM program in the United States
Wikimedia DC is a partner to the Cato Institute, a think tank which is
exploring the possibility of documenting all notable US laws of the central
government on Wikipedia. This is said to be necessary to democracy.
Wiki Project Med - A proposed thematic chapter which is international but
legally registered in New York
outreach to medical schools for the Wikipedia Education Program
Translation Task Force - an effort to improve the 100 most popular health
articles to good status, then translate them into every language. Supported
by a partnership with Translators without Borders
Partnerships with three organizations to develop health content - Consumer
Reports in the United States, the World Health Organization in Geneva, and
the Cochrane Collaboration in the UK
Wikimedia LGBT -a proposed thematic organization which is international but
almost entirely English speaking
fledgling organization seeking greater development
created proposal for Peer review between chapters -
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Peer_review
proposal for people at gay prides around the world to upload and document
gay pride events in every country
development of Wikipedia anti-discrimination infrastructure, including
safe-space policies, harassment complaint guidelines, and support for
people who complain of discrimination
collaborations
Wikimedia DC, Wikimedia NYC, and Wiki Project Med are collaborating on a
partnership with the National Institutes of Health. This is the top health
agency of the government and several people in this organization are more
welcoming to a Wikipedia partnership than the current Wikipedia community
is able to be in return. When there is more health community which can
interact with them, it seems that they will be increasingly friendly to
collaborate.
Thanks,

Hello,
I want to urge everyone to look at the message I posted to the talk page
here -
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wiki_Project_Med#401.28c.29.283.29_Upda…
It discusses important information with regards to our application for
federal non-profit status and requires a response from all board members.
Thanks,
Peter
G'day!
I work on a resource called PubMed Health, at the National Center for
Biotechnology Information (NCBI), a division of the US National Library of
Medicine. We're part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in
Bethesda, Maryland.
Several years ago, the NIH held a Wikipedia Academy (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Academy/NIH_2009 ). Guidelines for
participation in Wikipedia were developed for NIH staff:
http://www.nih.gov/icd/od/ocpl/resources/wikipedia/index.htm
The NCBI has been collaborating with WikiProject Medicine for a few
months. We're delighted that Doc James (James Heilman from Project
Medicine) and Blue Rasberry (Lane Rasberry, Wikipedian-in-Residence at
Consumer Reports) are spending most of next week with us to further both
our collaboration, and We're having meetings and edit-a-thons next week
at the NIH campus in Bethesda - but you can also register to participate
in webinars of the edit-a-thons on Tuesday afternoon and Thursday morning
next week, US EST. Here's our project page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Medicine/May_2013
Email to register either in reply to this email or to pmhmeet(a)gmail.com
Apologies for the short notice - but we hope it's not too late to stir up
interest in participation.
Best wishes
Hilda Bastian
