Others, We can probably automate the translation (transliteration). I have done this for film/song/artist names, it was quite accurate. Is there a way to update the OSM using an API with translated values? Never tried and hence asking.
Technically its possible, however we don't need the tranlations in OSM itself to generate localized maps. If we have a dictionary of english names and local equivalent, we can even do a database join before passing the data to the rendering engine.
This is something we should discuss on the OSM India list: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-in

If anyone interested in creating localized maps for Wikipedia, please come over for the openstreetmap community meetup this Sunday in Indiranagar. We will do some locality mapping and experiment with rendering Kannada maps. No prior experience required.
