The Chapters Committee has officially approved The Wiki Society of
Washington, DC as a Wikimedia chapter! (resolution below)
Thank you to chapcom for working with us through the process and
everyone with the chapter who helped out as we got established and for
supporting us.
Chapcom has recommended some changes in our bylaws that we should
consider.

The chapcom recommedation goes to the WMF board for their (rubber
stamp) approval and then we are official.
Cheers,
Katie

[edit]Chapters Committee Advice
Whereas,
The Wiki Society of Washington, DC Inc. has requested to be recognized
as sub-national chapter under the name Wikimedia Washington DC, the
Bylaws have been reviewed by the Chapters Committee, and the group of
participants in the candidate chapter seems viable:
The Chapters Committee hereby advises that the Board of Trustees
recognize the existing organization The Wiki Society of Washington, DC
Inc., founded on 7 May 2011, as a Wikimedia Chapter under the name
Wikimedia Washington DC and grant it interim permission to use the
Wikimedia trademarks pending the signing of a Chapters Agreement.
[edit]Proposed Board Resolution
In accordance with the recommendation of the Chapters Committee,
confirming that the structure and bylaws of Wikimedia District of
Columbia comply with the current requirements and guidelines for
future chapters, it is hereby resolved that:
The Board of Trustees provisionally recognizes Wikimedia District of
Columbia as a Wikimedia Chapter and grants it permission to use the
Wikimedia trademarks, pending signature of a Chapters Agreement. This
provisional recognition and permission will expire in one year unless
a Chapters Agreement is signed, at which point recognition and
trademark use will be governed by the terms of the Agreement for as
long as it is in force. The provisional period may be extended at the
discretion of the Foundation's Executive Director.
There were procedural issues around the approval process and because
of that WM DC should address in reasonable amount of time concerns
raised at [1] in cooperation with Chapters committee.

Hi everyone,
In preparation for our upcoming annual meeting, and the elections scheduled
to take place at that time, the Board of Directors of the Wiki Society of
Washington, DC Inc. will be appointing an Election Committee, which will be
responsible for ensuring the eligibility of candidates, preparing ballots,
and counting votes.
We are looking for two volunteers to fill the open seats on this committee.
The volunteers will not be able to stand for election to the Board while
they are serving on the committee, so please don't volunteer if you intend
to be a candidate in the upcoming election.
If you are interested in volunteering, please send me an email containing
your (real) name and a note to that effect.
Thanks,
Kirill

I'm super delighted to see great interest in helping them. :)
User:MichChemGSI, a campus ambassador, is doing initial follow-up with the
person and we'll see what they want.
I think if this works like any of the GLAM collaborations, we'll need a
bunch of folks involved to help, we might be able to do a workshop(s) for
them, etc.
Stay tuned....
Cheers,
Katie

If you are at all interested in cultural and GLAM outreach, I invite you to
subscribe to a new regional mailing list on the topic:
http://lists.wikimedia.ch/listinfo/glam-north-america
It's a place to discuss and share about projects and coordinate outreach.
Right now, there's an abundance of opportunities for Wikipedians to work
with and help well-respected institutions get involved with Wikipedia!
Please come join the mailing list to find out more and get involved.
Cheers,
Katie

Someone at the National Research Council, which encompasses the National
Academy of Sciences and other institutions, contacted me on my talk page and
is interested in getting involved with Wikipedia.

I think that would be terrific to help them get involved, but I'm pretty
busy with other things at the moment. Who is interested in helping with this
and perhaps taking the lead on this? I'm happy to support however I can.
Cheers,
Katie

(CCing PA and NY Wikimedians; please come!)
As you are hopefully aware by now, since it is in the geonotice and I have
spammed talk pages, this Saturday, the National Archives will be hosting us
for a backstage pass tour and editathon. We have lots of space, and we could
have up to 40 people! So far, only 2 people have signed up as sure yeses,
which is a bit sad. :-( If you can possibly come, please do! Don't feel like
you need to come for the whole day if you can't/don't want to. If you are
afraid you may have trouble getting to College Park without a car, we can
make arrangements to make sure you get here, too. So, for everyone, whether
you can make it or not, I'd like to ask your help in getting the word out.
Please help make sure we have a good turnout. The meetup page is <
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/DC_20>.
We will be given a tour of the facility, including an opportunity to go in
the closed stacks and see some documents. There will also be time for lunch.
Afterward, we will convene in the research rooms for an editathon, and will
hopefully be joined by several staff members who want to get involved in
Wikipedia. I am holding a crash course in Wikipedia for staff all this week.
We also have a scanner (and visitors can bring their own), which we can use
to digitize documents for Commons; submit requests ahead of time, or a staff
member will pick some for us. New scans we do for documents not yet in the
catalog will then be cataloged by NARA staff using our scans! And there are
plenty of books and journals on hand for article research; let me know if
you want to pick a theme for the editing.

Great news on the library front! Three quick updates:
1. We now have a gorgeous confirmed space for a demo lab, on the main
floor of the central DC Public Library.[1] It will tentatively be
open five days a week from 2-5pm, and two days a week from 2-7pm. It
has its own dedicated router for guaranteed high-speed connectivity,
and a few hundred sqft of space.
2. We've found an architect renowned for their work with library and
youth spaces, through Nate, who will lead the design process.[2] They
have a particular interest in library spaces with small footprints.
3. We have set up a new Google group for LibLab discussions.[3] I'll
move updates and discussion about the project there; those who are
interested, please join the new group and introduce yourself there!
Thanks for all of the early support that's helped us move quickly on
this idea. I spoke briefly about the LibLab concept to the audience
at the Wikipedia in Higher Ed summit this past weekend at Simmons,
which Katie and I attended. Four people came up to talk to me
afterwards wanted to talk about that idea and getting their libraries
involved. So whatever we accomplish is likely to have national
visibility.
At this point we could use suggestions for hardware, software research
tools, and use cases; design ideas for the architect to work with;
projects wanting to use the lab, and volunteers to man it, for the ten
weeks from August 1 to October 15.

Update posted to Meta: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/LibLabs
We're still largely looking for abstract use cases, similar projects
around the world, groups that would use a space in DC, and volunteers
to staff the DCPL lab while others use it.
Nate and I talked to the founders of "The Uni Project" which is
implementing what could be considered a two- or three-module liblab
(mainly for group reading, reconfigurable space, and workshops) in NYC
and Boston. Lots of good overlap there; once we've nailed down an
elevator pitch next month they might sign on as a partner.

[Cross-posting to the wm-dc for information only; please continue
discussion on the liblabs list!]
