I want to let everyone know that I am resigning as President of Wikimedia
DC, effective at the end of March.
I will be spending a year in Germany and prefer someone local take on the
role of President of the chapter. I am willing to remain on the Board of
Directors in a non-officer role and continue on the Wikimania 2012
organizing team. (I'll be back in June to help out)
Huge thanks to Nicholas, James, Kirill, Tiffany, Kristin, and Kevin for
their excellent leadership and sure they will take the chapter to the next
level, with increased capacity to do outreach and support volunteers.
And thank you to all the members who have supported and been involved with
the chapter and Wikimedia outreach in the DC region!
Cheers,
Katie
PS - hope to see folks at our next meetup on March 10:

There lacks a regional ambassador for our region (excluding DC proper). Is
anyone interested or can recommend someone? How might the chapter fill
this role?

Hi everyone,
Just curious if the last weekend of March is available at the Library
Lab for an edit-a-thon around women in science, and a post-event meet up
will be held in the area afterwards.
Thanks!

Hello everyone,
As explained in the announcement forwarded to this list earlier today
(thanks Sarah!), Wikimedia chapters around the world are beginning the
biennial process of selecting two members of the Wikimedia Foundation's
Board of Trustees. As an official Wikimedia chapter, Wikimedia DC will
have the opportunity to participate in this selection process.
Unfortunately, the indications we are receiving from the process moderators
is that public discussion of the candidates will be severely curtailed by
the confidentiality rules currently in place; we will not, for example, be
able to distribute the list of candidates, or to provide direct
question-and-answer sessions between the candidates and our members.
Nevertheless, we intend to do everything in our power to ensure that the
opinions and concerns of our membership -- that is, you -- are taken into
account during the selection. In support of that goal, we would like to
ask that you send us any input you might have regarding the process and its
desired result. In particular, we are looking for questions that we should
ask of the candidates, as well as criteria that we can use to evaluate a
candidate's suitability for the Board of Trustees.
Please get us any input by March 1, so that we have it available when the
candidate question-and-answer period begins. Suggestions may be posted to
this list; alternatively, if you would prefer provide them privately, you
may send them to secretary(a)wikidc.org.
Thanks,
Kirill

Assuming I can cross post this, as it's popped up on a few lists I'm on.
Please see below - perhaps /you/ should run for the board :)

The Wikimedia chapters are seeking to appoint two candidates to sit
on the Wikimedia Foundation's Board of Trustees for two years,
starting 1 July 2012. The two new members of the board will help to
decide the future direction of the world?s leading non-profit
website. Wikimedia project are constructed by hundreds of thousands
of volunteers worldwide, supported by a growing number of staff and
an international network of chapters. Board membership is unpaid.
The chapters wish to appoint two excellent board members and believe
this can best be achieved by selecting from a large number of varied
and skilled candidates. Therefore, the chapters call for nominations
by everyone who believes they or someone they know would be
suitable. The chapters ask that this call for candidates be
distributed as widely as possible through such forums as mailing
lists, village pumps, and blogs.
The successful candidates will be committed to the Wikimedia mission
and willing and able to engage constructively with the stakeholders
of the movement, including the volunteers and the chapters that
provide it with essential support. The successful candidates will have:
* The ability to provide expertise to the board in its goal of
implementing a coherent vision on how the projects? communities,
the foundation, the chapters, and other affiliated groups work
together;
* Sensitivity to complex issues surrounding the multiplicity of
languages, cultures, and jurisdictions served by the
foundation?s projects;
* Knowledge and understanding of the governance of international
non-profit organizations, balancing autonomy and subsidiarity;
* The ability to think strategically and to work both as part of a
team and independently;
* A good standard of written and oral English (fluency in
additional language would be well regarded);
* Sufficient time to devote to the role of board member, and the
ability and willingness to travel.
Increasing the geographical diversity of current board membership
would be an advantage.
The selection process is set out

must be sent to the moderator Béria Lima (Wikimedia Portugal) and
deputy moderators Milos Rancic (Wikimedia Serbia) and Mardetanha

would like to nominate yourself or someone else, please see the
instructions here:
