Wikipedia Loves Libraries DC will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2011,
1-5pm, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library (DCPL). Our event
takes place during Digital Capital Week. We will be in our Library Lab
space at the MLK Jr Library, on the first floor in the Business-Tech
division of the library.
There will be something for newbies and experienced Wikimedians alike as we
spend an afternoon working on articles and editing Wikipedia:
For newbies, learn how to contribute to Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon: Improve Wikipedia content related to local DC history,
civil rights, and more
There may also be an opportunity to help digitize photographs of historic
Washington, DC and help transcribe and caption videos. Experienced
Wikimedians are very much needed to help any newbies that come!
You can signup, as usual, on our Wikipedia meetup page:

We are seeking additional volunteers for the Wikimania 2012 sponsorship
team. Please let me know if you are interested and your help (small or
large) would be most appreciated.
We need help brainstorming who / what prospective sponsors we should
contact. If you know any specific contacts (versus us making a cold call),
that would be most helpful, and we'll need help contacting sponsors.
The preliminary sponsorship levels are here:
http://wikimania2012.wikimedia.org/wiki/Sponsorships (feedback welcome)
If you can help improve the sponsorships page, that would be awesome, and we
need help turning the sponsorships page into a postcard + full page PDF (and
print) package with a great sales pitch for sponsors (what's in it for
them?).
Cheers,
Katie

(CCing NY Wikimedians: College Park is doable by BoltBus or car if you would
like to come.)
This Saturday, we have the special treat of being hosted by David Ferriero,
Archivist of the Unites States, at the National Archives for a backstage
pass tour into the stacks, free lunch, and scanning party. This is an
all-day event, but you can come for as much as you like. We have lots of
space, and we could accommodate 40 or more people. If you can possibly come,
please do! There are two buses that run infrequently by the Archives, but
we'll also try to match anyone who wants ride with someone coming from their
area, just ask. Everyone is welcome, no matter your skill level at
Wikipedia. As the AOTUS will be there, the event should be of particular
interest to many of us, but also to people within NARA and other
institutions who will be interested to hear his impressions. If you can
remember, please sign up on the meetup page before coming so we have an
accurate idea of the attendance.[1]
So, what is this about?
This event will closely mirror the NARA event in August.[2] We will be given
a tour of the facility, including an opportunity to go in the closed stacks
and see some documents. Last time, people really enjoyed this; we'll try to
make it interesting for last time's attendees by focusing on a different
collection (but you could also spend this time in the research room, if you
prefer). We are also getting a free, catered lunch this time, courtesy of
the Wikimedia Foundation. Afterward, we will head to the research rooms and
scan documents (or whatever else you'd like to, including editing and
transcribing). Please get in any final requests for documents to scan by
Friday at noon.[3] Scanned documents will not only get to be uploaded to
Commons, but your scans will become part of the National Archives' digital
collection and go in the online catalog. You might want to read my follow-up
blog post from last time: <
http://blogs.archives.gov/online-public-access/?p=5819>. Feel free to
respond here with questions.

Subject: [WikiDC] Audit Committee
To: WikiDC-internal <wikidc-internal(a)googlegroups.com>
Hi all,
I've been asked to be the chair of the audit committee. I'm also told
the audit committee must consist of at least three members. Following
best practices, the audit committee members should generally be
independent (not officers or employees) of WM-DC. We can re-use non-
officer board members though if any are willing. I expect it to be a
minimal time commitment. I'm going to meet with the treasurer to
review the financial records and discuss what is the best format to
present them to the audit committee members. I suspect it will be a
PDF copy of the bank statements and financial statements for the year.
Maybe an hour or two of time commitment, including discussion of scope
and clarification of issues. Any volunteers? Financial knowledge is
helpful, but not required.
Matt Bisanz
All,
The draft minutes for the Annual Membership Meeting held this afternoon are
attached. Please let me know of any corrections that need to be made no
later than Friday, October 7.
Thanks,
Kirill

Hi everyone,
As you probably know, one of the seats on the Board of Directors is
currently vacant, as only six candidates stood for election to seven seats.
Under our bylaws, the Board is required to appoint someone to fill the
vacant seat.
We are therefore inviting anyone interested in being part of the Board to
submit their name for consideration. The position does not require a
substantial time commitment -- we typically have formal meetings once a
month -- and the scope of the role is relatively flexible.
If anyone has questions regarding the responsibilities of the position or
the appointment process, please don't hesitate to contact myself or another
member of the Board.
Thanks,
Kirill
