Dear everybody,
One of the administrators on Meta have asked if we could shorten the time the CentralNotice is up for the contest (i.e. the banner on Wikipedia). I have tried to argue against it here but it would be great if I could link to any local discussions about the use of CentralNotice for WLPA (if you have any).
There are a few different ways forward that I see (and I might have missed some!):
Ask him to keep the CentralNotice, based on the argument that I have posted there.Ask him to keep the CentralNotice up but tell him that during the week we will (again?) bring the issue to our respective Wikipedia community and see what the community thinks?
In the discussion with him I suggested that we perhaps could modify the time frame that the CentralNotice is up for logged in users (but keep it on for anonymous user the entire time). What do you think about that?Adjust the time for both user groups a bit. If so, perhaps we could close the CentralNotice on the 25th or something? Is that a good date? Or is it better to close it for a week now and open it the last week?
Please let me know what you think is the best way forward!
Best,
John

Hello,
My name is Angelica Tavella, and I am a student at UC Berkeley that has been doing research on the effects of Italy's Cultural Heritage Protection Laws, and am focusing on Europeana and Wiki Commons (particularly the Wiki Loves Monuments competition).
I was wondering why WLPA is only in a few specified countries? Why not in Italy, or in some other European countries?
Thank you,
Angelica Tavella

Hi all,
I just added a page for the press on the international website (wikilovespublicart.com) and I would like to hear what you all think about it? Now it has the most recent press release in full (with the headline as a link to a pdf version and a section about images that they could use at the bottom. Should there be more information there?
Feel free to use the same concept on the national websites as well!
Best,
John

Hi,
Matthew Roth from WMF wrote to me yesterday and asked if I would like to write about WLPA on the Wikimedia Blog. I am thrilled about that of course :).
He asked about both when I was planning the post(s) and how many
posts I would like to see. I have not given him a formal answer yet, but I am thinking that I will ask for three posts:
One next week giving an overview of the contest and the teams. One post at the end of May wrapping it up (crunching some numbers about number of pics, participants, how much of the lists are now covered etc.)One blog post in July about the winners of the contest.
What do you think about that? Are there any other things that we should write about regarding the contest? I am thinking that I will put up a draft on the portal at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Public_Art_2013/Media… posts so that you all can proofread and help to improve it.
Also, I have added two suggestions for presentations at Wikimania that would focus on the contest. Please have a look and see if you would like to attend them in any capacity :)

Hi everybody,
I hope you are all doing well!
I just wanted to tell you all that I now have created a Communication strategy that might be helpful for all of you to have a look at: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Public_Art_2013/Commun…
On top of that there are two things that I would like to suggest:
Consider creating an event page on Facebook (if possible connected to your Chapter's Facebook page so that you can take advantages of the Chapters many followers); and
I would also like to ask you, if you have the possibility, to send me a rather short blog post about your national contest for the international blog (it should ideally be inspirational with a few tips and trix so that we can share experiences in a fun way :-). No more than a 2/3 of a A4.
Best,
John

Hi everybody!
I have created a page where we can do translations of texts that we all need in our respective language: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Public_Art_2013/Transl…
If you would be willing to translate the press release and other texts that I will add there, please sign up on the page!
Also, if you are a native speaker, I would much appreciate if you could have a look at the English text as well!
Thank you!

Hi everybody,
I hope things are going great with the preparations! Time is going so very fast and soon it's May, and I am wondering if there Is any team that have any problems and could need a helping hand?
Also, I would much encourage all of the organizers to get started with finding a jury. If you have a hard time finding volunteers for the jury from your local Wikipedia(s) for whatever reason, don't forget that you also can contact people on Wikimedia Commons!
Cheers,
John

Hi Pradeep!
Have you managed to find some datasets or other listings with public artworks in India (be it on the national, regional or local level)? A small pilot version of the contest should still be possible to organize if you have!
Best,
John

Hi Pradeep,
Have you been successful identifying any list(s) of artworks? If you don't find a national list you might be able to find a regional or municipal list that you could use instead this year - to try out the concept. Most countries, sadly, seem to lack a national database of artworks.
Kind regards,
John

hi,
Continuing the conversation here.
A few people in India have expressed interest in doing WLPA. I am looking for a listing of public art in India. Any help in this regard would be of help.
warm regards,

Hi Pradeep,
I don't know anyone in the GLAM sector in India so I can't really give you any insights. However, I do have a few suggestions where you could ask to find someone who knows more:
* Perhaps the GLAMs in India that you have been in contact with before could be of assistance?
* It might be an idea to post a question on WikiProject Visual Arts. There are a lot of great people hanging around there. :)
* Someone on the Cultural partners mailing list might know what Indian organizations to contact.
Also, perhaps we should move the discussion about Wikimedia India's participation to Wiki Loves Public Art's mailing list instead: wikilovespublicart at lists.wikimedia.org? There might be some knowledgeable people there that might be able to help.
Cheers,
John

Hi John,
I apologise if this is seen as going off-topic for this list.
One of the principal problem that we are trying to address vis-a-vis public art in India is the lack of a central repository of lists of such a work.
For WLM, we had such a list provided by the Archaeological Survey of India, which defined monuments in India. I have, thus far not seen any similar definition or institution for public art in India.
However, we are trying to solve this issue by talking to art institutions in general and certain organisations that do public art performance in India like The Wall Project, Khoj International.
At this level, I guess it would help if we can get contacts or introductions to people whom we can speak to in India, in this regard.
Thanks,
Pradeep Mohandas,
Chair, GLAM Special Interest Group,
Wikimedia India Chapter

Hi Niraj,
Thank you kindly for your offer!
This initiative is not only for European Chapters and Wikimedia India is more than welcome to participate if you would like to organize the contest in India! It would be great if you would!
As Wikimedia Sweden's involvement is financed by Europeana any direct financial support (from our project budget) can only be given to European Chapters (e.g. for my work time or for costs of hosting websites etc.). However, I would be happy to assist Wikimedia India with my volunteer hat on if there is something that you are wondering about! :)
Cheers,
John

Hey,
Great Initiative and all the best wishes for the same.
Thanks to Noopur for sharing.
Sadly its only for Chapters in European Union!
But would be glad to help in any way possible.

Hi Rachel!
Sorry for the very late response. I had totally missed your email.
Currently there are no one working on Wiki Loves Public Art in the U.S., but today I have emailed a few Wikimedians based in the U.S. that previously showed interest in the contest to let them know about your offer!
Kind regards,
John

Hi everyone,
I want to introduce myself and my project because we love public art too! I
manage a new searchable multi-media database of completed public art
projects, called the Public Art
Archive<http://www.publicartarchive.org/content/about-public-art-archive>.
The project is managed by a regional arts service organization, the Western
States Arts Federation (WESTAF <http://westaf.org>) based in Denver,
Colorado. If there is anyone interested in doing a WLPA project in the
western portion of the U.S. and would like for their content to also appear
in the Public Art Archive, please contact me.
Looking forward to seeing how the contest goes!
