Hello all, few days ago my mom got a telephone-call by an English speaking person babbling something about "servers" (she was not able to understand more and terminated the line). I'm not saying that it was one of you, but the incident inspired me for the following declaration: *NEVER* call me by phone! Even if you are able to get a phone-number of me and even if the toolserver is melting: There is no reason ever to call me – if you call me and I am able to identify you I am going to delete your account. The only exception is Nosy who has my cell-phone-number. If you like to contact me try IRC. If I am not online try to contact another root so he/she can solve the problem. If you can't find another root or it has to be me and it is important, write my an eMail. If I am not able to check my mails the chance is VERY high that I'm can not ssh to the toolserver anyway. Hello! New TS coordinator @ WMDE

Dear Toolserver people! Hi! I am the new person managing all toolserver issues at Wikimedia Germany. This means that I am the contact person at WMDE for questions concerning the current toolserver and I coordinate a small team of WMDE staff members for the upcoming migration process to WMF Labs. Wikimedia Germany is going to support the toolserver as long as there is no alternative ready. I would like to stress that I'll do my best to help you keep it running until then. Please don't hesitate to contact me when any problem occurs. I am in touch with DaB and Marlen and I will help with all I can do at WMDE to reduce failures/the time it takes to fix them. As you know, Wikimedia Foundation is currently working on a cloud-based infrastructure for tools that will - at some point in the nearer future - have functionalities equivalent to the toolserver. Many parts of it are up and running, but right now, it is not clear when Labs will have all the functionalities. Currently, WMDE and WMF are working together to set up a concrete road map within the next months (until May). Once this road map or further documentation exist, you'll know it, of course. When it comes to migrating your stuff, WMF and WMDE staff will support you as best we can - you saw Sumana's e-mail on this topic recently. I am looking forward to working with you all! Re-Import of commonswiki at cassia (sql-s2+sql-s5)

Hello all, I successfully converted the commons-binary-dump from the WMF to the traditional dump-format today. I will now re-import commons to everywhere we have it already, and I will start with cassia (s2+s5) Tomorrow, Friday, after 13:00 UTC. During the re-import the commons-copy of cassia will be inaccessible. The import will take some hours (depending on the load of the server) and to be safe I say hereby that commons on cassia will be away for 24h. Another thing: My personal eMail-Server will receive an hardware-update starting Friday 17:00 UTC: So it could be hard to reach me by mail for a few hours. In urgent cases, try to reach Nosy. WMF hiring contractor to work on Tools Labs

The Wikimedia Foundation has an opening for a contractor to work on Wikimedia Labs's "Tools Labs" environment. The initial contract is for 6 months at full time (40 hours per week), with optional renegotiation of the contract at the end of that term. Tools Lab Operations Engineer (Contractor) http://hire.jobvite.com/Jobvite/Job.aspx?j=o7y3Wfwo&c=qSa9VfwQ Wikimedia is looking for a contractor whose primary focus will be to assist the community developers to migrate their tools to this new Labs infrastructure, especially those residing in Toolserver today. In addition, this person will: Support enhancement and perform operational duties of the Labs Virtualization Project using OpenStack and LAMP-stack technology. Duties include developing, deploying and supporting tools to provision and manage large networks of virtual machines, creating a redundant and scalable cloud computing platform Set up monitoring systems Provide system and database administration duties for the Labs environment Candidates do not have to live in the USA; remote candidates are welcome. You must be willing to travel occasionally for international meetings, as well as to perform your duties. Two WMF people are already working on the Wikimedia Labs infrastructure (Ryan Lane and Andrew Bogott); this contractor will work closely with them, DaB. and Nosy, Toolserver users, and the Engineering Community Team. Cron on willow

Has anyone else noticed this? I am having problems with cron on willow, which does not seem to be executing my crontab. I tried to test it by adding a line to my crontab that should execute every minute: * * * * * /home/cbm/touch.sh That script runs correctly from the command line, but cron does not seem to execute it. Some of my other other cronjobs appear not to have run in a couple days, even though they were working fine for months before. - Carl

Crons overflow/server overload on Willow (other)

Hello, I just noticed that my "welcome" crons have stopped running. Looking at "top", it seems that the server's CPU is fully used, all the time. Includes several instances of : -user rez : ~/pywikipedia/zzfawikipatroler.py, ~/pywikipedia/zzavanegary.py, ~/pywikipedia/zznavbox.py -user javadyou : ~/pywikipedia/radeh7.py I'm afraid that's one or more of those scripts have a misformed cron/parameters that keeps opening new ones while the old aren't terminated, hogging the CRON for themselves. Downtime of s7 starting tomorrow

Hello all, good news: We got a s4 and a s7-dump from the WMF, I transfer them to the toolserver at the moment. Because the integration of Wikidata in hu/hewiki will start soon AFAIK, I will begin with s7. Because the dumps are in the new binary-format the actual "import" will be quite fast, the downtime of s7 should not be too long (at few hours at maximum, but I can't promise anything). So I hereby declare a read-only-time and a downtime of s7 Tomorrow, starting 16:00 UTC. The handling of s4 will take more time, because I have to convert the dump in the traditional format first.
