hi folks,
Sun has agreed to donate an additional server to act as a login server
for Zedler (what login-services does now), replacing the login-services
zone. this will allow MySQL to run without influence from CPU-consuming
user processes.
more details (and a more general announcement) to come later.

that's fine - i understand other people don't like Solaris, but until
(very) recently, no-one was interested in doing *anything* with Zedler
except me. and i prefer Solaris, so that's what it uses :)

are you fine with running Solaris in that case (as an end-user), or do
you still prefer Linux? recently i'm more interested in back-end
administration, and leaving user support to other people, especially
since other people have root/database access.
i've tried to make zedler "Linux-user-friendly" as far as installing GNU
tools and so on goes. if something is missing here, i'm happy to try to
fix it. (i haven't heard any complaints from users about this recently,
but i understand people are sometimes unwilling to complaing about
'charity' services--please /do/ tell me if something is still not
acceptable to most users.)
i am fine with acting as a sysadmin for Zedler with Solaris and leaving
everything else (including database) to other people--in fact, that's
pretty much what i do now.
if you (or DaB, or maybe someone else, if it's someone we can trust) is
okay with handing over the login server, and running some form of Linux
on it, i'm also fine with that. but in that case i won't be putting any
effort into it at all (although i will continue to run the DB server.)

Your feelings on Linux mirror mine on Solaris. (Although I've
administered both professionally, my solaris experiences ended around
the time they hopped to single digit version numbers.. and the
improvements thus far are mostly just annoying to me. :) I'll learn
but I'm not eager)
Division of labor? The work I'm most excited about (other than my own
projects) is helping with on toolserver is basically training
toolserver users, creating tool parts and tools to make tools.. Front
end stuff.

i'm not interested in spending my spare time running a Linux system.
however if other admins are interested in this it's a possibility.

Thoughts on running linux on this one? It is the preferred development
environment for most of our users.

I'm seeing some confusing revision data in the database. Maybe it's just me, but the toolserver
data doesn't seem to match what's happening on wikipedia. I have reports from three different
people that my tools don't act normally for recent data.
Here are the details for one specific revision that I'm confused about...
Compare the en.wikipedia.org information for rev_id=48644364:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=prev&diff=48644364
page title = Cranford, New Jersey, Main Page
user name = Alansohn
rev comment = copyedit and wikify to put term dates and party on line for each committee member
rev timestamp = 2006-04-16T01:26:50
To the toolserver's, and they don't match:
mysql> SELECT * FROM enwiki_p.revision LEFT JOIN enwiki_p.page ON rev_page=page_id LEFT JOIN enwiki_p.user_ids ON user_id=rev_user WHERE rev_id=48644364\G
*************************** 1. row ***************************

Just as a quick sanity check, the information from the following two sources (for a revision made before the db cluster split) do match each other:
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?oldid=prev&diff=40000000
SELECT * FROM enwiki_p.revision LEFT JOIN enwiki_p.page ON rev_page=page_id LEFT JOIN enwiki_p.user_ids ON user_id=rev_user WHERE rev_id=40000000\G

zedler will be offline at some point after 12:00 UTC today for
installation of some new hardware. this shouldn't last more than an
hour or two at the most.
- river.
Interiot has started a maintenance log (separate from the normal admin
log) for zedler:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Toolserver/MaintenanceLog
it's probably a good idea for people to update this when they do
something (however minor) since a few folks have root access now.
