Hey all,
We just published "My life as an autistic Wikipedian" to the blog. URL:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/07/31/autistic-wikipedia-life/
Many thanks to Guillaume for this post.
Below are some proposed social media messages. Please tweak as needed.
*Twitter (@wikipedia/@wikimedia):* • "As you can imagine, realizing at 31 that you are on the autism spectrum changes your perception dramatically." https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/07/31/autistic-wikipedia-life/
*Facebook/Google+:* • "When I first moved to the US, every time someone asked me “How are you?”, I would pause to consider the question. Now, I’ve learned that it’s a greeting, not an actual question." https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/07/31/autistic-wikipedia-life/
thanks, Joe
Comments In Line. Assuming the post is the same (or similar) from Guillaume's blog as it looks like it (I haven't read the full WMF blog version yet) I'm so excited we're giving it a wider viewing. Thanks for helping to get it up Joe (and I'm sure others :) ).
Guillaume: This is a an amazingly good look as what it's like and works well not just as a reflection on your experience but as a tool for others to understand both the Autism spectrum and Wikipedians as a whole. Well done :)

LGTM like the quote, don't have a great alternative to sneak in Guillaume's twitter account as a mention

Amazing quote. LGTM x2 (I'm going to post it myself too)
thanks, Joe

Thanks; to be honest I've been surprised by the reactions. I wasn't expecting my Wikimania talk and my text to get so much attention!

The following twoosh could work:
Wikipedian @gpaumier found out at 31 he was autistic: "As you can imagine, it changes your perception dramatically." https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/07/31/autistic-wikipedia-life/
But it feels a bit self-serving to be the one suggesting it, so I'm also fine with Joe's original proposal.

This thread is veering a bit offtopic ;) but I can't help piling on: Kudos to Guillaume for sharing this, and the talk in Mexico was great too - I'm very glad I went to see it.
Be aware that someone is trying to tie the post to the gender gap discussion, citing the higher incidence of autism in men: https://edoornbusch.wordpress.com/2015/08/02/wikisoap-autisme-gendergap/ (Google Translate should give the gist; also of the reaction of the editor she diagnosed with autism for reverting or deleting her contributions about jewelry designers https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overleg_gebruiker:Paul_Brussel#De_fout_ligt_no... ) Without disputing or confirming that particular blogger's account that she may have had unpleasant interactions on the Dutch Wikipedia: It would be unfortunate if Guillaume's call for neurodiversity became an excuse for people to remotely diagnose mental health issues in Wikipedians who correct or delete their contributions (and yes, I realize that it is purposefully and rightfully never called a disorder in Guillaume's post - but in other parts of society we are still far from "autistic" not being perceived a pejorative). On the other hand, Guillaume's post might become very valuable as a corrective for the negative narrative that has been developed about the editing community's attitudes in many places. After all, what's so wrong about an encyclopedia being written by people who are "obsessed with citations, references, and verifiability"?

Tilman, can you explain further what you're suggesting? I would worry about a narrative that tied difficulties in community interactions to an alleged prevalance of Autism-spectrum disorders in the Wikimedia community, and I think you agree with that sentiment, but I'm not sure how this blog post ties into "a corrective for the negative narrative that has been developed about the editing community's attitudes in many places." Can you elaborate?
Thanks, Pine On Aug 3, 2015 5:33 AM, "Tilman Bayer" tbayer@wikimedia.org wrote:

Be aware that someone is trying to tie the post to the gender gap discussion, citing the higher incidence of autism in men: https://edoornbusch.wordpress.com/2015/08/02/wikisoap-autisme-gendergap/ (Google Translate should give the gist; also of the reaction of the editor she diagnosed with autism for reverting or deleting her contributions about jewelry designers
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overleg_gebruiker:Paul_Brussel#De_fout_ligt_no... ) Without disputing or confirming that particular blogger's account that she may have had unpleasant interactions on the Dutch Wikipedia: It would be unfortunate if Guillaume's call for neurodiversity became an excuse for people to remotely diagnose mental health issues in Wikipedians who correct or delete their contributions (and yes, I realize that it is purposefully and rightfully never called a disorder in Guillaume's post - but in other parts of society we are still far from "autistic" not being perceived a pejorative). On the other hand, Guillaume's post might become very valuable as a corrective for the negative narrative that has been developed about the editing community's attitudes in many places. After all, what's so wrong about an encyclopedia being written by people who are "obsessed with citations, references, and verifiability"?

The following twoosh could work:
Wikipedian @gpaumier found out at 31 he was autistic: "As you can
imagine, it
changes your perception dramatically." https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/07/31/autistic-wikipedia-life/
But it feels a bit self-serving to be the one suggesting it, so I'm
also fine
with Joe's original proposal.

Changing the subject a bit, +1 to the thanks to Guillaume for sharing this. It's interesting to see the world from a different perspective, and courageous for him to publicly talk about his experience.

Pine, I'm not sure why you read a suggestion into this. The blog post is already out (and the social media messages have been taken care of), we'll see what its reception and impact are.
If you read the whole post, the second-to-last paragraph (together with the preceding one on computer-mediated communication) contains some explanations why certain autistic traits - e.g. intensive attention to detail - might be seen as strengths in the context of working on Wikipedia, facilitating positive contributions that benefit the project and its readers. That's what I was referring to, with the hope that this aspect about the upsides of neurodiversity will prevail over negative readings of the post such as in the the link I shared.
