How to avoid edit conflicts?

Hi, I have target = pywikibot.Page(site, uploadPage) oldtext = target.get() <long computing> target.put(pretext + text, uploadComment) pywikibot.exceptions.EditConflict: An edit conflict has occured. So, is the likelihood of an edit conflict connected to elpased time between instantiation and put(), or between get() and put()? Is it useful to reinstantiate the page? Is it useful to give a second chance to put() in case of edit conflict, or loop it? -- Bináris

Trying to connect to a wiki on localhost

Hi, I'm playing with pywikibot. I have a mediawiki on my local machine, for testing. I want to extract the text from a page in it, the page being < http://127.0.0.1/mw/index.php/Cabalamat:Test_Article>, so I have tried this code: localMw = pywikibot.Site( url="http://127.0.0.1/mw/index.php/") page = pywikibot.Page(localMw, "Cabalamat:Test_Article") however, I get this error message: Traceback (most recent call last): File "simple.py", line 27, in <module> url="http://127.0.0.1/mw/index.php/") File "/home/phil/sproj/wfbots/venv/local/lib/python2.7/site-packages/pywikibot/__init__.py", line 1214, in Site raise SiteDefinitionError("Unknown URL '{0}'.".format(url)) pywikibot.exceptions.SiteDefinitionError: Unknown URL ' http://127.0.0.1/mw/index.php/'. <class 'pywikibot.exceptions.SiteDefinitionError'> CRITICAL: Closing network session. Looking at the documentation, it says < https://doc.wikimedia.org/pywikibot/api_ref/pywikibot.html#pywikibot.Site>: *url* (*string*) – Instead of code and fam, does try to get a Site based on the URL. Still requires that the family supporting that URL exists. >From this I get the impression that pywikibot has a list of mediawiki sites that it recognises, and if a site isn't on that list, it won't work. Generating attribution for commons image

Is there some existing pywikibot script that allows to automatically build attribution text for a given image on the commons? I plan on reusing large amount of images and I need some way to automate generating credit. I prefer to avoid writing parser of commons templates from scratch - reusing existing code would be preferable. I expected that there is some pywikibot script already and I am unable to find it. Problem Setting Up/Logging In with Pywikibot

Hope I'm doing this right... First time using a mailing list... Anyway, So I'm trying to make a bot for a third-party wiki, https://sto.gamepedia.com/ I should probably mention that I've never actually made a bot before. So I've generated my family and user-config files via the generate-family-file and generate-user-files commands. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary during these processes. The problem I'm having is when I try to log in. Not only does it completely ignore the fact that I've created a user-password file (I have set it up in my user-config file as well), it also does not log in when I've entered in my bot password manually. It says I've logged in successfully, but whenever I try and do anything, it prompts me for my password as if I was logged in. I have a suspicion this is because of the convoluted process users have to endure to log in to the wiki. When users try to log in via STOWiki, they are redirected to Gamepedia to log in there. However, because Gamepedia merged with Twitch, users have had to create a Twitch account in order to log in to Gamepedia, and any existing Gamepedia accounts (including the one I am using for the bot) have had to be merged with a Twitch account. As if that wasn't complicated enough, there's an extra hoop bots have to jump through involving setting up a bot password (which I have done), more info on which can be found here <https://help.gamepedia.com/Logging_in_to_third-party_tools>. To sum up, I have absolutely no idea what I might be doing wrong or how to fix it, and could really use some help. Thanks in advance!

Dropping support for Python 2.6 and 3.3

Python 2.6 is not supported by PSF since 2013-10-29.[1] Python 3.3 reached it's EOL on 2017-09-19. Packages have already started to drop support for it. It's a burden for developers keep the tests passing for these python versions. And, I believe, for contributors to keep the code backward compatible. Problem setting up pywikibot

I'm running MediaWiki 1.29.1 on FreeBSD 10.3-RELEASE running mysql 5.6.38, php 7.1.10 and python 2.7.14. The wiki is working fine. I installed pywikibot using git clone. The ID is $Id: 03e22e8ea7bf53dc7c9d47b6d7ad98c3c7afabb4. When I try to generate the family file, I get this error: requests.exceptions.ConnectionError: HTTPSConnectionPool(host='wiki.vvfh.org', port=443): Max retries exceeded with url: / (Caused by SSLError(SSLError("bad handshake: Error([('SSL routines', 'ssl3_get_server_certificate', 'certificate verify failed')],)",),)) It's strange, because the certs verify from the commandline and SSLLabs says the site rates an A and the entire chain is found. I'm not sure why python is failing the verification test. I've been googling and trying to find a way to disable ssl verification, but I haven't found it. The software is installed on the server the wiki runs on, and I'm running it from the commandline, so not verifying SSL isn't a big issue. (Only I have access to the server.) Google Code-in: Get your tasks for young contributors prepared!

Google Code-in is an annual contest for 13-17 year old students. It will take place from Nov28 to Jan17 and is not only about coding tasks. While we wait whether Wikimedia will get accepted: * You have small, self-contained bugs you'd like to see fixed? * Your documentation needs specific improvements? * Your user interface has small design issues? * Your Outreachy/Summer of Code project welcomes small tweaks? * You'd enjoy helping someone port your template to Lua? * Your gadget code uses some deprecated API calls? * You have tasks in mind that welcome some research? Also note that "Beginner tasks" (e.g. "Set up Vagrant" etc) and "generic" tasks are very welcome (e.g. "Choose & fix 2 PHP7 issues from the list in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T120336 "). Because we will need hundreds of tasks. :) And we also have more than 400 unassigned open 'easy' tasks listed: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/query/HCyOonSbFn.z/#R Would you be willing to mentor some of those in your area?
