Dear colleagues,
With apologies for cross-posting.
We would appreciate if you could circulate the below information about third call for the Sloane Lab's Community Fellowship scheme (2 positions available).
The fellowship comes with an award of £7,500. We welcome applications from outside as well as inside the United Kingdom.
The tenure of the fellowship does not require residency in the UK. All fellowships will be hosted remotely online. Applications to the fellowship are particularly welcomed from Global Majority Individuals.
This advertised role offers an exciting opportunity for individuals with an interest in contributing to the Sloane Lab<https://sloanelab.org/>, including but not limited to, digital humanists, artists, computer and data scientists and heritage practitioners (community or institution based). For this fellowship opportunity we are looking for individuals who will help us to understand the creative and research potential of the Sloane Lab digital platform and data (see Knowledge Base<https://sloanelab.org/the-sloane-lab-knowledge-base/> and Sloane collections and external resources<https://sloanelab.org/sloanes-collections/>) in the following areas:
* Examples of how the Sloane Lab can help to shed light on the geographic spread, collectors and knowledge about objects in the Sloane collections (for instance objects originating from South Asia, East Asia, America, Africa, and Europe. Due to the expertise in the team supporting this round we welcome in particular proposals relating to South Asia).
* The contested nature of museum collections, the role of digital tools in foregrounding overlooked or ignored and marginalised issues like imperialism, colonialism, slavery, loss, and destruction, that have shaped the UK's national collections.
* The potential of Sloane Lab digital tools for transferability to and enhancement of other collections
Start Date: 29th April 2024 or based upon negotiation
End Date: The post is funded for 3 months

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am Associate Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, and I conduct a study on intellectual property management within museums. If you work at a museum, I kindly request you to participate in a brief survey.
The survey aims to explore the perspectives of museum staff regarding the practicality of intellectual property rights in their daily work. It should take approximately 15 minutes to complete and all responses will remain anonymous.
The survey is in English and comprises 25 factual questions, primarily offering single-choice, rating, and ranking options. There are also three open-ended questions that require responses in English.
You can access the survey online:
https://culturemanagement.limesurvey.net/256147?lang=en
I have attached a Word document containing the list of survey questions for your reference prior to completing the survey.
The research findings will be included in an upcoming book and scientific article. I will also gladly share the results. Shall any of the participants be interested in them, please contact me at anna.pluszynska(a)uj.edu.pl.
Your participation would be greatly appreciated, and I kindly request to complete the survey by 23.12.2023.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Anna Pluszyńska

Dear colleagues,
With apologies for cross-posting.
We would appreciate if you could please circulate the below information about a AHRC-LAHP doctoral award at UCL and Kew Gardens.
The Department of Information Studies at UCL and Royal Botanic Gardens Kew are excited to announce a doctoral studentship for a collaborative research project to critically evaluate the history of the Kew Gardens Archives between 1841 and 1958 to understand record-keeping at Kew as both instrument and legacy of the British imperial project.
Empire and archives are intimately linked. Archival forms and record-keeping practices reflect and inform systems of governance; record-keeping was central to attempts by imperial powers to maintain administrative control. The Archives of the Royal Botanic Gardens (RBG) Kew are of significance to the history of global botany and in addressing questions of biodiversity loss, climate change, and environmental sustainability. By employing participatory research methods with historically impacted communities, the research will enable new, more diverse histories of Kew Gardens and British imperialism.
We are now recruiting a student. We are looking for applicants with an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject and a Master's degree or equivalent professional experience. We also welcome candidates who have some experience, qualification or understanding of archival science or archival history, demonstrated by, for example, use of archives in their previous research, a post-graduate qualification in archives and records management or relevant work experience in an archive. We particularly welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, or those who could bring a community perspective to the research.
Please see details and how to apply: https://www.lahp.ac.uk/prospective-students/collaborative-doctoral-awards-p… . The closing date is 5pm on Friday 26th January 2024.
Best wishes
Marco

*Pelagios Visualisation Talk with Mitchell Whitelaw, 5 October 2023 (online
via Zoom)*
*11am BST, 8pm ACT, 12pm CET, 6am**(!)** ET*
We are delighted that *Mitchell Whitelaw* <https://mtchl.net/>, Professor
at the School of Art and Design at the Australian National University has
agreed to deliver the annual Pelagios <https://pelagios.org/> open
visualisation talk on the topic of ‘*Visualising Lively Data*’. Prof.
Whitelaw's concept of Generous Interfaces for Digital Cultural Collections
<https://www.digitalhumanities.org/dhq/vol/9/1/000205/000205.html> has
offered valuable insights for heritage engagement and we look forward to
hearing about his latest work.
The living world is increasingly captured and represented through data.
While this data is shaped by scientific models of knowledge, biodiversity
data might also offer new and urgent forms of engagement with a
more-than-human world. Through a series of recent projects and experimental
research, this talk asks how we might design more “lively” visual
interfaces to this lively data.

Coordinators of the Pelagios Visualisation activity
The Pelagios Network is a global community of researchers, scientists and
curators using Linked Data methods and tools to investigate the past.
Within this community the Visualisation Activity exists to promote
discussion of the illustration and dissemination of spatial data and
networks. Many of you will remember the fascinating talk given last year by
Olivia Vane, about her work on data visualisation for *The Economist.* In
previous years speakers have included Elijah Meeks and Johanna Drucker.
Professor Whitelaw is based at the School of Art and Design at the
Australian National University, and is an academic, writer and maker with
interests in digital design and culture, data practices, more-than-human
worlds and digital collections. His teaching and research takes up data and
code to seek out moments of insight and delight that intensify our
engagement with a complex world. His work has appeared in journals
including Leonardo, Digital Creativity, Digital Humanities Quarterly, and
Senses and Society. He has worked with institutions including the State
Library of NSW, the State Library of Queensland, the National Archives and
the National Gallery of Australia, developing "generous" interfaces to
their digital collections. His current research investigates environmental
and biodiversity visualisation, and digital design for a more-than-human
world.
