Symposium
New Paradigms for Accessing and Curating Audiovisual Collections
28-29 September 2023
In the present context of transformation, accessibility and curation of datafied content requires rethinking to meaningfully unlock the sheer volume and complexity of large-scale audiovisual collections. Standard interfaces often ignore the potential to explore features like the visual, the auditory, and the haptic, which are not easily accessible via traditional metadata. Investigating new modalities for audiovisual archives can be facilitated via innovative curatorial access and informatics models that can activate new frameworks of engagement, interaction, and meaning-making. While pushing the boundaries for accessibility, the new interfaces, experiences, and curatorial models also raise technological and conceptual questions about every aspect of archival practice, especially with regards to preservation in this age of data.
Addressing these challenges, the symposium is stimulated by a growing need for collection access models that go beyond traditional strategies, as well as by the need to reconceptualize curatorial and presentation frameworks and models. It aims to explore the intersection of cutting-edge computational methods and audiovisual archiving through three themed sessions, each designed to cover a specific and unique angle:
A Blurry Boundary: From Archive to Data
A New Way of Seeing: Analytics and Curation
In Progress and Practice: An Institutional Zoom-in
Bringing together more than 20 world-leading scholars in various fields (such as media and cultural studies, digital humanities, archival science, informatics and human-computer interaction), archivists and curators from heritage institutions, as well as domain experts and artists, this symposium will serve as a holistic venue to explore and critically reflect on the affordances and limitations of cutting-edge computational methods and tools for preserving, accessing and utilizing audiovisual materials and to push forward a digital and data-driven mindset for the future of audiovisual collections.

Special Film Screening
Film, the Living Record of Our Memory
28 September 2023, during the symposium
On the evening of September 28th, we will host a special screening of the recent documentary Film, the Living Record of Our Memory.
Synopsis:
Why are we still able to watch moving images captured over 125 years ago?
As we move ever further into the digital age, our audiovisual heritage seems to be taken increasingly for granted. However, much of our filmed history and cinema has already been lost forever.
Film archivists, curators, technicians and filmmakers from around the world explain what film preservation is and why it is needed. This documentary puts the focus on film custodians who work behind the scenes to safeguard the survival of motion pictures. It is a task they undertake based on their closely held belief in the artistic and cultural value of the moving image, in tune with a shared mantra that a film might one day transform someone’s life. This documentary is a homage to them all and sheds some light on their critical undertaking.

PhD workshop
Beyond Search: Opening Up Audiovisual Content for Humanities Studies
25-26 September 2023 (2 ECTS provided by EPFL, travel subsidy available)
In recent years, audiovisual content, with its growing accessibility, rich hidden meanings, and complex modality, has become a new frontier for research in the humanities and computational domains. The quest to meaningfully open up the variety of information (historical, social, affective, and aesthetic) available in ever-increasing audiovisual materials requires a collective effort to co-create not only new research methods but also new research questions.
This 2-day workshop, covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of processing and utilising audiovisual data, provides an entry point and a test field for researchers working on digital humanities, audiovisual content understanding, and HCI to formulate and validate new ideas.
Lecturers:
Prof. Marina Hassapopoulou, New York University
Ingrid Mason, National Film and Sound Archive of Australia
Prof. Matthias Grotkopp, Freie Universität Berlin
Prof. Mark Williams & Dr John P. Bell, Dartmouth College
Dr Luca Rossetto, University of Zurich

University of Milano-Bicocca, Milan, Italy
Paper Submission Deadline: 13th August, 2023
http://www.mtsr-conf.org/track/cultural-collections
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
MTSR2023 Conference will accommodate a dedicated session for OnLine presentation
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Proceedings will be published in Springer CCIS series. CCIS is abstracted/indexed in Scopus, SCImago,
EI-Compendex, Mathematical Reviews, DBLP, Google Scholar. CCIS volumes are also submitted for the
inclusion in ISI Proceedings.
** AIM AND SCOPE
Cultural Heritage collections are essential knowledge infrastructures that provide a solid
representation of the historical background of human communities. These knowledge infrastructures
are constructed from and integrate cultural information derived from diverse memory institutions,
mainly libraries, archives and museums. Each individual community has spent a lot of effort
in order to develop, support and promote its own systems, tools and metadata for the management
of cultural information, mainly related to its particular resources and use.
In this framework, the management of the cultural information has to deal with challenges related to
(i) metadata modeling, specification, standardization, extraction, (semantic) enrichment, mapping,
integration, effective use, and evaluation, (ii) knowledge representation as conceptualization to
provide the context for unambiguously interpreting metadata, and (iii) information integration from
different contexts for the provision of integrated access, reuse and advanced services to users.
At the same time, there are also inter-domain efforts targeted to semantically align data (research
data, educational data, public sector information etc.) to cultural information. New challenges are
also emerged from the need to incorporate cultural information into the new publication paradigms,
where a variety of resources (data, metadata, processes, results, etc) are linked and integrated,
providing better shareability and reusability. Currently, Linked (Open) Data, as part of the
Semantic Web Technology, is having a major role in modernizing cultural heritage collections.
Providing to users the possibility to re-use and integrate data into their own systems is currently
more than a need, given that transparency and access to information is a prerequisite. A critical
factor to the effectiveness of many aspects of all the above efforts is the quality of metadata,
as interpreted by its context and use and evaluated by the proper measures and methods. Many
institutions and aggregate infrastructures are dealing with the poor quality of metadata that
inevitably results in poor integration, search and reuse, while their enrichment, in terms of
contextualization, co-referencing, alignment, etc, is really challenging.
The aim of this Special Track is to maintain a dialogue where researchers and practitioners working
on all the aspects of the cultural information will come together and exchange ideas about open issues
at all stages of the cultural heritage information life cycle. The track also welcomes works related to
semantics and applications for new approaches to cultural information publication and sharing, as well
as to interlinking to other datasets published in the Semantic Web universe.

Hello, open knowledge and GLAM Community Members,
In an effort to better understand primary opportunities and concerns in
expanding global culture and perspective to audiences worldwide, an effort
in the GLAM and open knowledge community has come together to field a
survey of experts in the field. We want to know where help is needed:
Where can foundations and organizations like ours turn their attention to
fill in the gaps and create effective partnerships? How can we best reach
audiences?
We ask for a few minutes of your time to share your insights through our
survey. Please complete the survey, identifying what is important to your
community. We aim to align future activities with the needs and wants of
the open knowledge and GLAM community in 2024 and beyond.
If you received this request, it is because you are an imperative member of
this network. The anonymous survey takes only a minute to see if you
qualify. For those whose organizations meet survey qualifications, the full
questionnaire takes only about five minutes to complete. Upon completing
the survey, qualifying respondents can select a nonprofit to receive a
donation through GlobalGiving. GlobalGiving makes donations to more than
5,000 charitable projects in 175+ countries. Help us, and we’ll help
another organization that you believe in.
We appreciate your time and collaboration. To complete the survey click on
the link below.
Many thanks!
