I saw this tweet today [1] about a Wikipedia nearby mashup [2]. I was interested to see that they use a Wikipedia geonames api. Do we think this is because the geodata api has not been well enough advertised or could it possibly be something to do with the simplicity/documentation/additional output of the api?

I would guess the former - have you tried asking him directly? I bet he'd be willing to share.
