Hello mobile Wikimedians,
We've just pushed another beta of our upcoming release to our TestFlight
channel. This update fixes:
- Register our Notifications with the OS, so users are correctly asked
for permission and notifications can actually be sent
- Lots of crash fixes, especially on app launch, iPad and when scrolling
the Explore feed
Thanks to the many many testers who reported these issues.
If you are not in the beta, but would like to join, please sign up here:

Thanks,
Josh Minor
Hello,
The beta of the next version (5.3.0) of the Wikipedia app for iOS is now
available to beta testers on TestFlight.
This beta includes a few significant improvements:
- Support for simplified and other Chinese character preferences for zh
Wikipedia
- Major improvements in the loading and scrolling speed of the Explore
feed, and use of the feed API developed by the Android team[1]
- Support for widgets on iOS 9
- In the News items from the Main page now included in the feed (see also
Android)
- Improved presentation of citations on iPad (phone coming in next beta)
- Trending In the News push notification…
*About Notifications*
The iOS beta is also piloting a push notification[2] option for users. If
the user is interested, the app will notify them of new In the news items
from their primary language which meet a page view threshold. You can 3D
press the notifications to see more info, or tap through to read more.
This kind of content notification is a new concept for the Wikipedia apps
and we look forward to hearing from you and our users whether we should
keep it, and how to make it better.
*To sign up for the beta,* please go here: https://goo.gl/forms/
ifUKBVGgXzkbNv4q1
*If you are in the beta,* your feedback about the notifications is very
much requested here:
https://goo.gl/forms/REUQALjHCdAyQIP83
Thanks,
Josh

(sorry for cross-posting, people, but such is life)
Wikimedia CH is looking for a HTML/Node.js/JavaScript/CSS contractor to help with Kiwix, the offline Wikipedia reader
The Kiwix project (http://code.kiwix.org/ <http://code.kiwix.org/>, http://www.kiwix.org <http://www.kiwix.org/>) is an offline reader for web content. Contents are stored into a local ZIM file that can be browsed later on.
Although Kiwix' main use is that of an offline Wikipedia reader, it also supports other kinds of content (other Wikimedia projects, Stackoverflow, TED talks, etc.)
The ZIM archive we currently generate from Wikimedia dumps is not very mobile-friendly. We need someone to modify the scrapper (https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner <https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner> in Node.js) so as subsequently to improve/preprocess the html/css/js content.A list of task can be found here:
* https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner <https://github.com/kiwix/mwoffliner>
* https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix/labels/be-mobile <https://github.com/kiwix/kiwix/labels/be-mobile>
This is a free (as in free speech) project, so a bit of experience with interacting with a community would be a plus. But any one can join.
If you're interested, if you know anyone that could be interested, please send an email to

Hi,
I've been asked by a Hebrew Wikipedia editor: Why is it only possible to
have the edit button at the top headings (==), but not smaller headings
(===, etc.)?
This should be in
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Apps/Android_FAQ#Editing :)

Hi everyone,
We're excited to bring you an updated version of the Wikipedia Android app
<https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.wikipedia&hl=en>,
rolling out now to the Google Play Store! [1]
This version contains the following updates:
- Access your favorite features more easily with bottom navigation: quickly
jump between the Explore feed, your reading lists, your recently-viewed
articles, and pages nearby you.
- When reading an article, the bottom toolbar now provides access to the
most popular actions (save to reading list, share, change language, find in
page, and table of contents).
- Reading lists and their contents are now searchable.
- A number of minor bug and crash fixes.
Want to help make the app even better? Read our getting-started
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Apps/Team/Wikipedia_Android_app_ha…>
guide, and start contributing!
[1] For devices without Google Play services, you may download
<https://releases.wikimedia.org/mobile/android/wikipedia/stable/wikipedia-2.…>
the app directly.
Cheers,
