Greetings,
In an effort to answer the question, “Who is using MediaWiki?” the MediaWiki
Stakeholder’s Group
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/MediaWiki_Stakeholders%27_Group> organized
a survey.
We want to hear from existing MediaWiki users and ask that you complete
this short survey about your use of MediaWiki. The results of the survey
will help by providing input that should influence the future development
of MediaWiki. We also hope to grow the community of MediaWiki Users and
improve involvement.
The preliminary results of this survey will be anonymized shared with the
public at the MediaWiki Stakeholder's session at Wikimania 2015
<https://wikimania2015.wikimedia.org/wiki/Submissions/MediaWiki_Stakeholders…>
and
will be posted to MediaWiki.org at a later date
<https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/2015_MediaWiki_User_Survey>. An anonymized
data set will be available for download as well. This survey is separated
into two parts and should take about 10 minutes to complete.
To include as many MediaWiki users as possible, please help us spread this
survey far and wide. The survey will close on *Friday, July 31st*.

The videos of our June 9th event are now available online. Visit our wiki
main page[1] for links to the videos and presentation materials.
The agenda page also has a summary of our discussion about what
characteristics and features would make up the "perfect" KM system. I don't
think this is an exhaustive list, but it shows the most popular responses
from the day.
If you would like to partner with NASA in order to collaborate on any of
these ideas for development of an open-source MediaWiki extension, please
contact us. As discussed in the break-out session, we have many different
options available for collaborative partnerships.
We are also looking for ideas on what kind of event to host next. If you
have any ideas, please let us know. For example, we could shift the scope
from a large conference with presentations to smaller sessions where we
experiment with one or two ideas on how to improve MediaWiki. This could be
more of a working/hacking session.
One more thing - our participants engaged in a little demonstration of the
flexible power of a Semantic MediaWiki. Several people created their user
page using Semantic Forms, which set several semantic properties used to
automatically populate the People Data page[2].

On Tuesday June 9th, join us to discuss lessons-learned, share open-source
software, and explore opportunities for collaborative development
agreements on expanding and improving knowledge management tools. This
includes but is not limited to extensions for MediaWiki and other wiki
platforms. We'd like to invite everyone ranging from software developers
and system administrators to end users and managers. NASA's Johnson Space
Center is teaming with the Technology Collaboration Center of Houston to
host this event.
Our preliminary agenda includes (but is not limited to):
- How a wiki can be more accountable than any other KM system
- How to organize data using templates and onboard new users
- What features and qualities make for the "perfect" KM system?
- How to complete the culture shift to using a wiki (getting the last
10% to use it)
- NASA's strategy for critical data visibility through KM
- Accelerating development of a knowledge sharing program
If you are interested in attending, please register so we can finalize the
logistics including room size. If you would like to present a relevant
topic, please contact us with the details.
Register at
http://www.tcc-houston.org/knowledge-management-technologies.html
We may offer the ability to remotely participate. If you are unable to
travel to Houston and would like more information, please contact us.
If you have any questions, feel free to email us at

SMWCon (http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/SMWCon_Spring_2015), the twice-yearly conference about Semantic MediaWiki, is coming to St. Louis this Spring.
The event, organized by local volunteers, will be hosted at T-Rex May 6-8. Attendance is open to anyone wanting to learn about the intersection of the semantic web and collaborative wikis.
==What is Semantic MediaWiki?==
Semantic MediaWiki (https://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/Semantic_MediaWiki) (SMW) is a free, open-source extension to MediaWiki – the wiki software that powers Wikipedia – that lets you store and query data within the wiki's pages.
Semantic MediaWiki is also a full-fledged framework, in conjunction with many spinoff extensions, that can turn a wiki into a powerful and flexible knowledge management system. All data created within SMW can easily be published via the Semantic Web, allowing other systems to use this data seamlessly.
Semantic MediaWiki is used on sites like Gamepedia’s League of Legends wiki (http://lol.gamepedia.com/League_of_Legends_Wiki), the W3C’s WebPlatform.org (https://docs.webplatform.org/wiki/Main_Page) and Practical Plants (http://practicalplants.org). It’s also used by numerous organizations internally to document and share information. At past SMWCon’s we’ve had folks from NATO, NASA, MITRE, and Cirque du Soleil talking about how they use a wiki within their organizations.
==What is SMWCon?==
SMWCon is a twice annual gathering of SMW administrators, developers, and users who come together to discuss the latest in SMW developments, share what they’re working on, and learn how others are using SMW in various industries.
SMWCon Spring 2015 is a 3-day event. The first day focuses on tutorials and introductions to Semantic MediaWiki. The second day is a traditional single-track series of presentations from various folks within the community. The third day is a continuation of talks, and breakout sessions for groups to discuss project work - planning for new development, documentation, or other SMW-related efforts.
The conference is May 6-8, 2015 and will be at T-Rex, a local tech incubator and co-working space. We’ll have breakfast for all three days, lunch for two, and a social night out at a local venue.
If you’re thinking about attending, visit the conference page (http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/SMWCon_Spring_2015) and add your name to the list. That’s right, just edit the page. It’s a wiki after all.
Formal registration and tickets can be found at http://smwcons2015.eventbrite.com We have Early-bird and Academic pricing available.
==Speakers Wanted==
We’re looking for folks to share their experience using wikis - from the technology and administration to the community building and philosophy behind open collaborative sharing platforms like Semantic MediaWiki. If you’d like to present, you guessed it, just edit the conference page (http://semantic-mediawiki.org/wiki/SMWCon_Spring_2015) with your proposed talk.
I hope you’ll attend this year and please help spread the word to anyone you think might be interested.
For more information or questions, contact the local chair, Chris Koerner, at Chris.Koerner(a)Mercy.Net.
