Hi All,
I am hoping to add an Editing Events organizer training to the Programs and
Events Dashboard in the coming months. I know there is a lot of
documentation for editathons out there, including but not limited to what I
have listed at:
https://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/GLAM/Sharing_Knowledge#Editathons .
What is your favorite piece of documentation (any language) for new
Editathon runners?
Cheers,
Alex

Hi GLAM-Wiki leaders and event runners,
I get a lot of requests for advice and support designing edit-a-thons. I
also hear a lot of advice from program leaders, that I know other program
leaders do not know about.
Moreover, since more and more campaigns and activities are being run in the
Programs and Events Dashboard, I wanted to make sure we had advice brought
together in one place accessible and translatable for the dashboard.
Hence, I am happy to announce a very first, preliminary draft of an
"Editathon runner" training designed for the Programs and Events dashboard
training modules:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Training_modules/Editathons/First_Draft
I need your help: this draft, is a very early draft. Please review it to
make sure that it reflects that practices you would expect of edit-a-thon
runners in your context! More instructions for feedback are on the page,
but I welcome feedback here as well or at Wikimania.
Also, a special thanks to everyone who share their advice in the the
earlier threads, especially Kerry Raymond who articulated a number of
details that I wouldn't have included by default in the training.
Cheers,
Alex

Subject: [Commons-l] Welcome Amanda Bittaker as the Program Manager for
Structured Commons
To: "Discussion list for the Wikidata project." <
wikidata(a)lists.wikimedia.org>, Wikimedia Commons Discussion List <
commons-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Cc: Amanda Bittaker <abittaker(a)wikimedia.org>
Hi Wikidata and Commons Communities,
I’m excited to let you all know that Amanda Bittaker (cc'ed) has joined the
Audiences (formerly Product) team at the Wikimedia Foundation as the
Program Manager for the Structured Data on Commons program. She will be
working closely with teams from the Wikimedia Foundation, the Wikidata team
at Wikimedia Deutschland, and the communities to complete the Alfred P.
Sloan Foundation grant [1], expanding the capabilities of Commons to make
it easier for people and institutions to find, share, and reuse Commons
content.
Many people may have met Amanda already. She joined the Foundation in
November 2014, working with the Learning & Evaluation team to help wiki
program organizers’ design, manage, and evaluate their programs. During
that time, she also partnered with engineers to build program tools such as
the Program and Events Dashboard[2] and the Global Metrics Magic Button [3].
Before joining the Foundation, Amanda worked in the international
development industry for five years, doing finance, program design,
monitoring, and evaluation. She spent two years in South America. Once upon
a time she also ran and oversaw programs at a nonprofit bicycle education
space that operated entirely by general consensus, which taught her a lot
about collaborative and transparent program management.
She is eager to work on Structured Data on Commons, helping our communities
make Commons as useful as possible, and helping to make transitions in
processes and workflows as smooth as possible. Amanda is based in San
Francisco in the US. You can find her on the wikis or at Wikimania or the
Wikimania hackathon in Montreal. She can converse pretty well in English
and Spanish, and would like to practice her French more, but it is still
very basic.
Cheers,
Alex

Subject: [Wikimedia Announcements] Wikimedia Conference 2017: Report and
more learning material published
To: WikimediaAnnounce-l <WikimediaAnnounce-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Dear Wikimedians,
Three months ago, we welcomed many of you in Berlin to work, discuss and
get inspired at the Wikimedia Conference 2017. We have now published our
extensive and colorful grant report for this event, and you can read it on
Meta:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2017/Report
In the meantime, the documentation of all sessions is complete. Check it
out on Meta as well:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2017/Documentation
While preparing the report, we have also written three learning patterns to
capture and share our experiences with other movement event organizers.
1) “Timing, Communication, Preparation: How to support your event
participants in the best way to get a Schengen Visa”
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/Timing,

3) “The Buddy Project: Let’s make your conference more newbie friendly!”
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Learning_patterns/The_
Buddy_Project:_Let%E2%80%99s_make_your_conference_more_newbie_friendly!
And if you think, “wow, that’s a lot!”: David Saroyan, Visiting Wikimedian
at Wikimedia Deutschland from January until April, wrote a blog post about
his experience in the Wikimedia blog:
https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/06/30/why-i-visiting-wikimedian/
We would like to thank all participants, partners, affiliates and experts
who have contributed to making this such a great event, and the Wikimedia
Foundation for their generous support.
Thank you,
Happy reading,
Cornelius, Nicole, Daniela and Wenke
(the WMCON team)
PS: Stay tuned for our upcoming announcement of the Wikimedia Conference
2018 dates.

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Wikiconference North America 2017, August 9th - 10th
in Montreal!
To: "wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org" <wikimedia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
Hi all,
We are excited to have this opportunity to host WikiConference North
America 2017<https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2017/Main_Page> (August 9th &
10th) this year ahead of Wikimania and we hope to see you there! As in
2016, the first day of WCNA is designated as our Wiki Culture Crawl Day and
the second day is fully programmed.
Wednesday, August 9th will be a Culture Crawl Day! This is a day-long event
where we collaborate with local museums, libraries, and cultural
institutions to host free backstage tours, edit-a-thons, and more. These
crawls are a fantastic opportunity for conference attendees to experience
the local culture, as well as collaborate with local institutions to
improve Wikipedia.
This year we have established relationships and are planning free access
and events with the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ)
and McGill University. At the BAnQ, we plan to have an edit-a-thon, where
Wikimedians utilize the Archive's resources to improve Wikipedia's coverage
of Montreal's people - and ending with an evening reception. A photo drive<
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2017/Photo_Drive> will be occurring
throughout the day.
Thursday, August 10th will be a day of programming. If you are interested
in participating in programming at WCNA, such as a presentation, panel
discussion, or an unconference session (lightning talk, open space, etc.)
on Thursday, August 10th, please submit your proposal here<
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2017/Submissions>.
We are seeking volunteers to help during the conference. Please sign up as
a volunteer<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfh4x1yzqiAuwbkHvy2BaIV
TLAxj6UP5DbXcfC-bUSdz67hyg/viewform?usp=sf_link> if you are interested.
For both days of WCNA 2017, you will need to register<https://
wikimania2017.wikimedia.org/wiki/Registration> through the Wikimania
Eventbrite<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wikimania-
2017-registration-33032011636>. Please be sure you are registering for the
August 9 & 10, Wikiconference North America sessions. For those attending
the August 9th Cultural Crawl, there is a promo code available (wmcon2017);
note that if you use the promo code, you may not attend other
pre-conference events on August 9th. Only use the promo code if you plan on
only attending our Culture Crawl, as if you register for the incorrect
event with the promo code, you may be barred from entry to that
pre-conference event and/or session.

Quoting from the blog post: "As WikiCite continues to grow, it will be
interesting to follow how (hopefully not whether!) the community integrates
GLAM metadata. Generating Linked Open Data citations has the potential to
connect objects and concepts with information resources to create context
for more accurate and interesting digital representations of knowledge and
cultural heritage. And more complete and complex graphs are better at
supporting deeper investigations, queries, and visualizations of these data
across repositories, collections, and knowledge bases."
