Hi All,
I just wanted to send a reminder for the new GLAM-Strategist role at the
Wikimedia Foundation. Especially if you have experience with the GLAM-Wiki
community, this would be a good fit: https://boards.
greenhouse.io/wikimedia/jobs/584916
We are particularly looking for folks that can help us develop partnership
models and community capacity within our existing community around Wikidata
and Structured Data on Commons.
Cheers,
Alex Stinson

Subject: [GLAM] Possible editing outages during April
To: "glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org" <glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
This is early warning of some planned server operations, as an outage can
cause a severe disruption on a short workshop:
In April 2016, the Technology Operations team at the WMF did some work on
the servers that run Wikipedia and the other wikis. This resulted in all
editing being stopped at all wikis for about half an hour on two different
days.
A similar project is currently expected sometime in April 2017. I do not
have specific dates or times yet. However, I expect the first editing
disruption to happen during the first half of April and the second to be
about two weeks afterwards.
They are hoping that the editing outages will be shorter this time (perhaps
15 to 30 minutes). The time of day is undecided; however, it will almost
certainly be when most of the Ops staff is online (afternoon in Europe and
Africa/morning in the Americas).
Last year, the official schedule was kept at https://wikitech.wikimedia.
org/wiki/Switch_Datacenter and the same page may be used again. *If you
are scheduling short workshops during April, then please consider checking
that schedule* or checking with me before you finalize your plans. If you
need to reach me, then I am currently subscribed to the GLAM mailing list,
and you can always leave a note on my talk page at https://en.wikipedia.org/

Hi US Wikimedians,
The upcoming total solar eclipse may be of interest. U.S. affiliates and
GLAM organizations may want to plan activities related to the eclipse,
possibly including Wiki-expeditions and edit-a-thons.

Dear #1Lib1Ref Heroes,
One last request for this year's campaign!
We want to make sure that in the face of "alternative facts" the world
knows that Wikipedia and Libraries are working side-by-side to bring
reliable information to the world. We stand together, because #factsmatter.
Please retweet a post sent out today from our main @Wikipedia account while
adding your own tagline to it like this:
#1Lib1Ref Happens Here. Because #FactsMatter.
https://twitter.com/Wikipedia/status/826792224084021250
That's all we need to maximize the momentum from an already record-breaking
global campaign (3 times bigger than last year!). We really appreciate your
help.
It matters now more than ever.

Hey #1lib1ref organizers, WikiLibrarians and GLAM-Wiki enthusiasts,
We wanted to send a brief update on how the campaign is going:
As of writing the email, the campaign has tracked over 1930 contributions
by 392 contributos in 1332 articles in 15 different languages (remember we
expect we are missing 1/4-1/2 of contributions that don't use the hashtag).
This well surpasses our [https://meta.wikimedia.org/
wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Lessons contributions from last year],
and we still have another week and a half to go! We published a brief
update blog at https://blog.wikimedia.org/2017/01/24/1lib1ref-first-
week-highlights/ to highlight these accomplishments.
We have seen a slightly smaller amount of blogging and newsletters as part
of the Campaign this year. We think this may be in part, because the
campaign is less novel and in part because of the broad number of
distractions in the press at the moment (we actually think this means we
have been more grassroots this year which is a good signal for the network
for Wikipedia and libraries). If you find pieces of press or blogs, make
sure to share them at:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/1Lib1Ref/Press
We are testing a Central Notice Banner, to encourage Wikimedians to go talk
to their librarians about #1lib1ref. So far we have seen pageview activity
from Wikipedians, but it is not clear how much that will transfer into
activity. We have yet to see a social media boost or huge boost in
participation using the hashtag. If you want to try the banner in your
language, instructions are below [1]
We could still use your help reminding librarians in your context to
participate! Something as simple as visiting your library and showing the
librarians how to add a citation to Wikipedia, or sending an email to your
local library organiziations, would be awesome. Sharing in digital
communications attracts some participants to the campaign, but we also know
that many of participants are encouraged by friends, peers, colleagues or
patrons to participate.
We look forward to seeing what other activities events emerge this year. If
you need help, make sure to contact the Wikipedia Library team.
Keep up the energy through February 3!
Alex Stinson

Subject: [GLAM] Call for Participation: 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon
To: glam(a)lists.wikimedia.org
Hi everyone,
We are once again in the process of co-organizing the international
Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thons and we are writing to solicit your
participation. This could take the form of forwarding this call onto folks
you think would want to organize an event; sharing info about the project
on your social media channels; organizing your own edit-a-thon; or any
other way you can think to spread the word. Any and all participation is
greatly appreciated!
--
*Call for Participation: 4th Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon, March,
2017*
DON’T AGONIZE, ORGANIZE! The award winning, record breaking Art+Feminism
Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is happening this March. Join us again or organize
for the first time to improve Wikipedia and affirm the importance of the
arts and intersectional feminisms. It matters more than ever as we face a
post-fact world, and what may follow. Email us at info(a)artandfeminism.org to
learn more about organizing an event.
WHY?
Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10% of its contributors identify
as female. While the reasons for the gender gap are up for debate, the
practical effect of the disparity is not: content is skewed by the lack of
female participation. Established in 2014, Art+Feminism Wikipedia
Edit-a-thon is a response to the gender gap in content and participation on
Wikipedia.
As the lead co-organizers of Art+Feminism, we’ve been deeply disturbed by
the sheer amount of fake news on social media, and its influence on the
recent US election. We believe this makes our work even more pressing. Now
more than ever we must gather together to improve Wikipedia and affirm work
of women, people of color, immigrants, the LGBTQIA+ community and other
marginalized peoples.
HOW?
Hold an Edit-a-thon at your local university, artist run center, museum,
community center, etc! Art+Feminism Edit-a-thons address content and
participation gaps by inviting people of all gender identities and
expressions to gather for communal updating of Wikipedia entries related to
art and feminism. The leadership collective supports Edit-a-thon organizers
by: providing an organizer’s kit
<http://www.artandfeminism.org/organizing-kit/> with suggested workflow,
promotional and training materials, and more; funding to defray the costs
of refreshments and childcare; and training and support.
WHEN?
The 2017 Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon at The Museum of Modern Art,
New York will take place on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Node events are
welcome to hold their event on this day or any other date in March, 2017
that makes sense for your community. To learn more and get involved,
contact the lead co-organizers via email: info(a)artandfeminism.org.
