Hello all,
The *Data Reuse Days https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Events/Data_Reuse_Days_2022* is a series of online events that will focus on the use of Wikidata's data: during the different sessions taking place from March 14th to 24th, you will discover plenty of projects using Wikidata's data, how they gather, polish and display the data, what challenges they encounter on the way, and how they give back to the community. You can also attend presentations and workshops to learn how to create tools using Wikidata, how to use Wikidata on the other Wikimedia projects, and participate in various discussions with editors, data reusers and members of the Wikidata development team.
You can *have a look at the schedule* on this page https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/wikidata-data-reuse-days-2022/ or on the calendar view https://diff.wikimedia.org/calendar/month/2022-03/?tribe_tags%5B0%5D=13446. Most sessions are taking place online on Jitsi, no registration or software needed. All events are free and open for everyone to join. The entire initiative, including the presentations and discussions on various channels, is covered by the Code of Conduct for technical spaces https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Code_of_Conduct.
Each session is independent, and while the schedule can look a bit intimidating, we encourage you to *look for the sessions that could be interesting for you*, pick a few of them, and join spontaneously if you have time. To help you navigate the schedule, here are a few suggestions on where to start:
- Curious about *who is actually using Wikidata's data*, looking for inspiration? You can check the lightning talks https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-opening-session-lightning-talks/, and sessions about performing and visual arts https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikidata-for-performing-and-visual-arts/ , civic tech and politics https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikidata-for-civic-tech/ , travel apps https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikidata-use-in-kdes-travel-apps/ , data journalism https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikidata-for-data-journalism-with-r/ , Wixhibit https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikxhibit-simple-authoring-tool-to-show-off-your-wikidata/ and Histropedia https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-histropedia-triumphs-and-challenges-of-reusing-wikidata/ - Interested to learn more on how to use *Wikidata on the Wikimedia projects*? We talk about Databox on Wikipedia https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-databox-a-simple-wikidata-powered-infobox-for-wikipedia/ and Commons infoboxes on files https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-commons-file-infoboxes-based-on-wikidata-and-sdc/ and categories https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-the-wikidata-infobox-on-commons/ - You would like to *create your first Wikidata-powered tool* but wonder where to start? You can discover how to retrieve Wikidata's data https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-how-to-retrieve-wikidatas-data/ and what are the best practices https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-best-practices-for-reusing-wikidatas-data/, watch the live-coding of a tool https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-building-a-simple-web-app-using-wikidata-data/, and join the data reuse clinic https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-data-reuse-clinic/ to ask for help if needed - You're particularly interested in *matching Wikidata with other databases*? Check out the Mismatch Finder demo https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-mismatch-finder-demo/ , introduction to OpenRefine https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-match-and-refine-data-with-openrefine/ , entity alignment checking https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-entity-alignment-checking-using-the-wolfram-language/ and Metaphacts https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikidata-apps-with-the-metaphactory-knowledge-graph-platform/ - You would like to chat with other data reusers and talk about your *issues and wishes*? You are welcome at the open hacking session https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-lightning-talks/, the Bug Triage Hour https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-wikidata-bug-triage-hour-data-reuse/ and the Pink Pony Session https://diff.wikimedia.org/event/%e2%99%bb%ef%b8%8f-pink-pony-session-closing/ !
Note about the calendar features: you can add a single session to your personal calendar, or even embed the full schedule. Please note that we're experimenting with using Diff's calendar feature, that is still in a test and improvements phase - some bugs may appear. If you notice anything strange, let me know so I can report them to the dedicated team at WMF.
If you have any questions, or if you would like to propose a last-minute presentation (there is still space left in the lightning talks sessions, or for interactive sessions such as editathons), feel free to contact me.
We are very excited to welcome you all in this new experiment of a remote Wikidata event, and to start plenty of interesting discussions between people editing, maintaining and using Wikidata's data!
Cheers,
