Wiki Loves Art / NL
In the month of June Wikimedia Nederland organized together with local
partners a Dutch version of Wiki Loves Art. Over 45 museums participated,
more then 200 people registered in the Flickr group and over 5400 freely
licenced photos were submitted. Amongst the participating museums were the
Van Gogh museum , Tropenmuseum, Boijmans van Beuningen and The
Gemeentemuseum. Participating museums were all around the country.
Most museums were allowing photographing the whole month, while some museums
organized special events for the photographers. Van Gogh organized two
special slots of two hour to photograph, without public, on June 23 and 28.
Wiki loves art / NL got quite some press coverage, including articles in
national newspapers and reports on national television. The majority of
reactions on the project were very positive. During Wiki Loves Art, several
events were organized in cooperation with the museums.
July and August will be used for categorizing, uploading and judging the
photos. Ten photographers will win prizes, including a cheque of 500 euros
to spend on photographic equipment for the best photo.

Wikimedia Czech Republic took part in two public exhibitions. In April,
it participated in the LinuxExpo fair, devoted to the open-source
community. In May, the association took part in the Book World fair,
where its kiosk was visited by hundreds of visitors. On both occasions,
the Wikimedia Czech Republic held official presentations in front of
dozens in auditory. Wikimedia Czech Republic presentation was
accompanied by the Microsoft personnel, which unique Microsoft Surface
system served as a valuable tool for the Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia
projects content and attracted much attention to the Wikimedia Czech
Republic kiosk.
Five different sets of leaflets were printed for these events and were
met with a considerable interest from the public. The leaflets were
partly financed by the special Wikimedia Foundation allowance.
The Czech edition of the Creative Commons licenses was published in
March, Wikimedia Czech Republic, who participated in the preparation of
the edition, took part in the official presentation.
Members of the association ran a series of presentations about Wikipedia
in the Czech scientific and academic institutions named "Wikipedia - can
I trust it? can I help it?".
Wikimedia Czech Republic published two official press releases (on the
occasion of approving the plan of activities and on the occasion of the
Wikimedia projects licensing update) that were used by several mostly
internet-oriented media.
At the end of June, the Wikimedia Czech Republic members started
preparation of the book of Wikipedia that shall be published in fall.
== Inter-Chapter ==
Wikimedia Czech Republic prepared eight applications for WMF grants that
were presented to the Wikimedia Foundation. The projects represent an
important segment of the planned activities for the near future. Six of
these applications were approved by the WMF at the beginning of July –
Digitalization equipment, Acquiring scientific and specialized pictures,
Camera, Exhibition presentation (the budget reduced by third), Czech
municipalities photographs and Photo Workshop.
Wikimedia Czech Republic representatives took part in the Berlin
chapters meeting.
== Internal ==
In March, Wikimedia Czech Republic members approved the association’s
budget and 2009 activities plan in a correspondence vote.
The Annual general meeting took place April 25 in Prague. Three new
members were elected into the board of the association. The annual
reports of the association were approved unanimously and the Bylaws of
the association were modified. The English version of the annual report
is available on the Meta wiki pages of Wikimedia Czech Republic.
The number of members varied around 30, the financial situation was
stable and the run of the association was funded by small donors and the
special allowance from the Wikimedia Foundation. The activities were
also supported by several local partners who provided the association a
material help.

Wikimania 2010 bid
We supported local Wikimania 2010 team from Gdańsk, which
succeeded to win the bid. After talks with local team and Carry Bass
from WMF it was decided that the local team will create its own
temporary asscociation to take control and responsibility for
Wikimania 2010 in Gdańsk. We are still open to help the local team if
needed.
T-shirts and other promotional gadgets
200 T-shirts with Wikipedia, Wikimedia Polska, Commons, Wikibooks
and Wikisłownik were made. Around 100 of them were distributed among
participants of Wikimedia Polska 2009 conference. The remaining
T-shirts are to be used for outreach and fundrising needs. 500
leaflets about Wikimedia Polska and Wikimedia projects were printed
for using the outreach and fundarising activities.

Wikipstryk
A local photo-contest was organized in Wrocław, by WMPL together
with local media (Gazeta Wrocławska - a newspaper and Radio Wrocław).
Thw contest was directed to junior high and high school students (age
between 14-20). Participants had a list of objects (buildings,
bridges, monuments etc.) located in Wrocław of which they should take
pictures and upload them to Commons. 442 pictures were taken and
uploaded covering many "targets" from the list. A jury consisting of
professional photographers from Gazeta Wrocławska, Radio Wrocław
photo-expert and WMPL members selected 20 best pictures. Internet
users could vote via a special webpage on their favorite photo and
thus grant a special award. The prizes were photo-cameras,
photo-printers, books about photography and some minor gadgets. See
the list of winners and all the photographs.
Scouting contest
Polish Scouting Association together with Wikimedia Polska tried
to organize a contest for the new, best Wikipedia article about
Scouting written by scouting teams from all over the country. The idea
was that scouting teams are writing new articles about scouting. The
teams which writes best articles will be awarded (1000 PLN for first
prize). Unfortunately, just two scouting teams registered for the
contest, so it was abandoned, and those two got some Wikimedia gadgets
as a kind of excuse. The main reason of failure was that Polish
Scouting Association authorities, which formally supported the idea do
not advertise effectively the contest via its organizational
structures and we were not able to reach the teams without that help.

Vth edition of mini-grant project which had been launched 15
January 2009 is in good progress. Till now 8 projects were drafted of
which 7 were accepted and are now in progress.
Polish-Lithuanian Wictionary project
The aim of the project was a cross-border co-operation of young
people from schools in Poland and Lithuania to create and develop the
Polish-Lithuanian dictionary on Wiktionary platform. The first stage
of the project took place on May 18-22. Two editors of Polish
Wiktionary organized two workshops: one in co-operation with several
secondary schools from Ełk (Poland) and the one in co-operation with
Nataljos Kazakovos kompiuterių Mokykla from Vilnius (Lithuania). The
WMPL covered the cost of travel by car for Wiktionary editors. During
the workshops around 100 new Wictionary's articles were created and
some more were expanded with information regarding Lithuanian
language. Several Workshop's participants continue their work in
Wictionary. The project is about to be continued. See more..
Kiloff art
workshop and several lectures related to the creation of films and
other art under free licenses were provided by members of the WMPL
during 5th Independent Film Festival kilOFF in Katowice. The lectures
and workshop was devoted to presentation Wikimedia Commons film
resources, Wikipedia articles about amateur film production and about
how to use ogg multimedia format. See more..
Wikiexpedition
A project of expedition in Podlasie - the worst covered area of
Poland in Polish Wikipedia - is in its final preparation. The aim of
the expedition is to make some photographic documentation of villages
and small towns in the area of Podlasie, photographic records of
specimens of nature in the region, and collection of locally available
sources of information. The Wikiexpedition is about to happen on July
10-18. 12 Polish Wikipedians are about to travel throughout Podlasie
using cars and bicycles, taking pictures and collecting data. WMPL
covers the cost of accommodation and travel for them. See more...
==Others==
BT-Phorm opt-out
WMPL following WMF and several WM Chapters sent a formal letter to
BT-Phorm to exclude from their system all the domains which are
registered by WMPL.
Silesian Wikipedia domain
Silesian Wikipedia editor who registered Polish domain for this
project, donated it to WMPL. WMPL took over control on this domain and
covered cost of keeping registration for 2009/2010 period.
WM-PL E-mail server change
From 2005 WMPL was using free web E-mail service to which all
*(a)wikimedia.pl addresses were redirected. Due to increasing needs of
having more profesional E-mail system WMPL has decided to use one of
Polish paid services. After selection several offers we have choosen
"PERSONAL hosting" service from AZ.pl, which provides up to 100 E-mail
boxes under common control of which all of them have no storage limit.
Arnold Buzdygan case
At 31 May 2009, a long story of Arnold Buzgydan's case found it's
end in court. In 2007 Arnold Buzdygan sued WMPL for the reason, that
he was called a "usenet troll" in his biography in polish Wikipedia.
WMPL line of defense was that we are not able to change anything in
Wikipedia as an organization, therefore we are not responsible for the
content. The case blocked possibility to redirect wikipedia.pl domain,
which is maintained by WMPL from Wikipedia-pl to search engine, as
French and German chapters did several years ago. After almost 2 years
and several trials the City Court in Wrocław finally rejected the
Buzdygan's case. However Mr. Buzdygan can still appeal to Higher Court
of Appeal.
Kataryna case
An illegal reveal of the name of famous but anonymous Polish
blogger "Kataryna" by Polish newspaper Dziennik, started a long
discussion in Polish main-stream media about responsibility and
anonymity on the Internet. Many voices in media demanded to
delegalization of anonymous publishing in Internet. WMPL produced an
official statement defending the right of anonymous publishing which
was broadcasted by several media in Poland.

Hi,
as promised a few weeks ago, here's the report for Februar 2009. March
and April to follow. The report is written from the perspective of
February so some wording may seem odd today.
== Projects ==
=== Zedler Award ===
Preparations for this year's presentation of the Zedler Award are under
way. Closing on a date and a venue were the main goals in February. A
meeting of partner was planned for March to discuss open issues.
=== School project ===
Catrin and I attended Didacta, an education fair, in Hanover to gather
some leads for potential partnerships. Some more work was put into the
project outline which was presented to leads we've contacted before.
=== Wikimedia Conference ===
Preparations for Wikimedia Conference continued as well. Our Community
Assistant Henriette Fiebig took over logistics. Daniel Kinzler and
Guillaume Paumier took over responsibility for the program of the
developer's and the chapter's tracks, respectively. We've selected
T-Labs as the venue which was offered to us rent-free.
=== Newsletter ===
Just in time for the general assembly, we'll be producing a new version
of the chapter newsletter. Catrin will be responsible for content and
design with contributions coming from board members, staff, and
volunteers. The newsletter will be printed in newspaper-style but will
also be available online. Main topics for the first issue will be
activities from the past months, the relocation of the office to Berlin,
the results of the fundraising campaign, the print-on-demand service
started by pediapress, and the 2009 Zedler Award.
=== Content cooperations ===
Mathias continued his talks with SLUB and other potential partners. An
agreement with SLUB is expected soon with first uploads to Commons
starting in March.
=== Public relations ===
February saw the launch of a print-on-demand service at Wikipedia
managed by pediapress, which was covered heavily by news media. Another
hot topic was the intentional addition of a fake middle name in the
article of Germany's new federal ministor of commerce, Karl-Theodor zu
Guttenberg. Our PR activities used this event as an opportunity to once
again promote our school project for media literacy in the classroom.
Overall, there were about 40 stories on Wikipedia, most of which relied
extensively on the chapter's PR activites managed by Catrin.
== Finances ==
=== Closing 2008 ===
Financial reports for fiscal year 2008 were finished in time for the
general assembly. Overall revenues for the year were €443,955.55
(2007: €289,393.29, +53%). Of those, €375,876.48 were revenues from
donations and €30.000,00 were revenues from license deals. Overall
expenditures were €344,444.35 (2007: €143,089.62, +141%) including
depreciation at €59,819.40.
=== Investments ===
The board approved new servers and tech gear for Amsterdam on January
12. An order worth €15.836,39 has placed this month.
== Staff ==
Sören Brandes started in the office as a student worker on February 26.
We've continued our search for an executive director. The search
committee decided to call for offers from headhunter to get a better
idea of services and costs involved. A new meeting was planned for March 1.
== Misc ==
For the rest of the year, these are the events and projects currently on
the radar:
March: CeBIT, General assembly
April: Wikimedia Conference
June: Wikimedia Deutschland 5th anniversary
July: You and Me
August: Wikimania 2009
September: Wikipedia Academy (?)
November: Zedler Award, Quadriga

By Brianna Laugher, President (blaugher at wikimedia dot org dot au)
==Annual General Meeting==
Wikimedia Australia had its first AGM on January 11th. Three groups
participated via conference call: Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.
Other members from different locations participated via IRC. Elections
for committee positions were held, with results as following:
* President: Brianna Laugher (uncontested)
* Vice President: Liam Wyatt
* Secretary: Sarah Ewart (uncontested)
* Treasurer: Brian Salter-Duke (uncontested)
* Ordinary members: John Vandenberg, Nathan Carter.

==Free as in Freedom miniconf==
A miniconf called "Free as in Freedom" was held in Hobart, on 20th
January, as part of the national Linux conference, linux.conf.au
(LCA). This miniconf was organised by Brianna Laugher (although not as
a Wikimedia Australia event); one of the speakers was Liam Wyatt and
one of the Keynote speakers of the whole conference was Wikimedia
Foundation advisory board chair Angela Beesley. It included talks on
open access, copyright law, geodata and citizen journalism. The first
Tasmanian Wikimedia meetup was also held, and a Wikimedia Australia
table was present at the LCA Open Day.

==Submission on Australian Digital Future Directions==
In February we made a submission to the federal government Department
of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE) on the
"Digital Economy Future Directions Consultation Paper". This is our
second submission to government, following our submission in September
2008 to the Victorian parliament's "Inquiry into Improving Access to
Victorian Public Sector Information and Data".
<http://wikimedia.org.au/wiki/Submission_on_Australian_Digital_Future_Direct…>
==Backstage Pass==
This was an event held on March 13th, with the Powerhouse Museum (PHM)
in Sydney. It involved giving Wikimedia Australia members a private
tour of the PHM's collections, followed by group editing of articles
relating to PHM topics. It was a very successful pilot event, leading
the PHM to license their collection documentation under a variety of
Creative Commons licenses.

==Berlin chapters meeting==
During April 3-5, Brianna Laugher and Liam Wyatt took part in the
first all chapters meeting in Berlin. It was an excellent opportunity
to present Wikimedia Australia and learn about what the other chapters
are doing.

==Unlocking IP==
On April 16-17 Brianna Laugher and Liam Wyatt attended the 'Unlocking
IP' conference at the Cyberspace Law and Policy Centre at the
University of NSW. Our talk was called "Wikimedia in copyright /
Copyright in Wikimedia" and touched on a variety of topics: how the
Wikimedia Commons community reconciles many national copyright laws;
the license switch; derivative works/the right to fork and the
non-commercial paradox.
As a consequence, we were invited to sit on a steering committee to
set up a national peak body to represent the public interest in
copyright law.

==Coming up==
GLAM-WIKI is a major event planned for August 6-7 at the Australian
War Memorial in Canberra. This will bring together members of the
Gallery, Library, Archive & Museum sector (GLAM) with people from our
community to discuss how we can collaborate and learn from each other.
In the first week of being open for attendees one third of all places
have been already been registered.

This is a short update on Wikimédia Magyarország's activities covering March
through May.
Starting first major programs
At the beginning of March Wikimedia Hungary commenced three of its major
programs for the current year, notably a micro-grants program, a picture
competition and an article writing competition.
The picture competition and the micro grants program are running until 15
June and we accept submissions (especially for the picture competition) from
everyone. For more information please see the page on Commons:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimedia_Hungary_picture_competi….
You can view the already submitted works at
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wikimedia_Hungary_picture_competi…;
the assessment will be concluded until July 15 in a fashion similar to the
Picture of the year selection, all editors are welcome to participate.
The first round of the article writing competition was concluded in March
with over 30 submitted or vastly improved articles, some of them are on the
way of becoming featured. The editors of the three articles found best were
awarded with Wikimedia goodies and valuable antique books (contributed by
one of our members).
Chapters meeting
Wikimedia Hungary, as all chapters was invited and present at the April
Wikimedia Conference in Berlin. Having representation – with the help of
fellow chapters – was one of the major international activities of our
chapter this year.
General Meeting
Wikimedia Hungary held its AGM on 23 May. As can be expected, there were
“state of the association” speeches and lots of necessary legal
housekeeping. The bylaws were not changed at this point but the Board was
authorised and asked to pursue the possibility of changing the legal address
of the chapter to the campus of the Budapest University of Technology and
Economics (BUTE). This change would bring us closer to all the life around
the university, to make this happen the Board will have to secure
sponsorship to rent a nominal area (1 m2) inside BUTE and then a second
General Meeting will officially make the change of address.
Wikipresentations
The writer of the 10 millionth Wikipedia article and our VP held a
presentation in Szeged in March about Wikipedia. Following the success of
these presentations, we were invited to give two follow-up presentations at
a club of the county chamber of commerce on 5 May. This second time our VP
and one of our members gave a general overview of Wikipedia as the
repository of human knowledge and the technical aspects of setting up a
wiki.
Hungarian National Bank
Our president approached the Hungarian National Bank to request advice on
the legal use of reproductions of Hungarian banknotes and coins to determine
whether and under what conditions they can be uploaded either to Wikimedia
Commons or the Hungarian Wikipedia. The meeting held in April provided some
useful insight about the current policies and possibilities regarding these
uses as well as some general guidelines about the possible ways for us to
get proper permission to publish.
Following this, the Hungarian National Bank has approached our chapter to
provide feedback for the next revision on the central bank's legal order
governing the reuse of reproductions of the banknotes and coins. In our
response, sent on June 5, we emphasized the outdated elements of the
previous order and advised the bank on reasonable conditions they should set
(keeping in mind ease of reuse, anti-counterfeiting measures and the
standards issued by the European Central Bank on euro banknotes).
Furthermore, we asked the bank to give more consideration to regulating the
copyrights it holds as well as the rights to use reproductions to facilitate
the actual use of the digital reproductions on Wikimedia projects.
Creative Commons Hungary Association
The Creative Commons Hungary Association was officially registered on May
15. This is really good news to us as the local CC community has been a
great source of legal help and we look forward to extending this mutually
beneficial relationship even further.
Wiki Loves Art / NL
Together with Creative Commons NL Wikimedia Nederland organizes Wiki Loves
Art / NL. 41 museums are participating, including the famous Van Gogh
Museum. Participants can make photographs during the month of June in these
museums of (parts of) their collection. Photos will be uploaded to Flickr
(CC-BY-SA or CC-BY), and the allowed photos will be uploaded en masse to
Wikimedia Commons after the tagging and judging has been finalized.
On June 1, a kickoff event was organized in the Jewish Historical Museum in
Amsterdam (>50 participants), and on June 21 a party will be organized in
the Rotterdam museum Boijmans van Beuningen. Wiki Loves Art was mentioned on
the national news with a 2 minute report and in several other main stream
news sources.

Lobby European Legislation
Wikimedia Nederland took the initiative to organize a meeting for European
chapters about EU legislation and policy lobbying. Interested chapter
representatives will come together mid July in Brussels to talk about a
strategy to set up a coordinated lobby to influence the EU legislation and
policies in a positive way for the Free Content movement.

Workshops
In the month September a series of Workshops and Open evenings will be
organized to familiarize people with Wikipedia and Wikimedia and to help
them become a volunteer more easily. People will be introduced to
Wikipedians and the basic principles of editing. Participants of Wiki Loves
Art are made aware of these workshops and meetings and are invited to
participate. Wikimedia Nederland attempts to bring in more volunteers to the
Wikimedia projects this way.
Presentations
Several presentations about Wikipedia/Wikipedia have been given. Hay gave a
presentation about OpenStreetMap and Wiki(p)(m)edia at the Geo Freedom Day
in Baarn.
Wikiwijs
The Dutch government has decided to support the creation of learning
material by teachers, which should become available under a CC-BY license.
This is being organized in the Wikiwijs project (not using a Wiki though),
currently in the development phase by the Kennisnet foundation. Wikimedia
Nederland keeps touch with the developments and to give advice and input
where appropriate and possible.
The May newsletter has been published at http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/
Newsletter/May2009 and is copied below for your convenience:
Summary: Whilst our application to HMRC has not yet been successful,
we're after your views on the proposed New Chapters' Agreement, your
suggestions for a Wikimedia UK conference next year and your ideas
for initiatives to start! We also bring you updates on Wikipedia
Loves Art, Other Chapters' Activities, Meet-ups and Press coverage.
In this month's newsletter:
1. HMRC Application Status
2. New Chapters' Agreement
3. Wikimania 2010 (and beyond!)
4. Initiatives
5. Wikipedia Loves Art
6. Other Chapters' Activities
7. Meet-ups
8. Press coverage
HMRC Application Status
As you are probably already aware, the UK Tax Authorities have
rejected our application to be recognised as a charity for tax
purposes, arguing that the production of an encyclopedia does not
consist of "promoting education". The Board continue to believe that
our purposes are charitable and are looking into ways of appealing
this decision. We are currently in the process of drafting and
sending a letter of appeal to the HMRC, along with seeking legal advice.
New Chapters' Agreement
The Wikimedia Foundation has released the latest version of the
Chapters' Agreement, which binds all chapters of the WMF. The new
version includes many changes, and WMUK wants to hear what it's
membership thinks of the changes! Got any comments or ideas for the
agreement? Let the Board know by emailing board(a)wikimedia.org.uk or
the mailing list (wikimediauk-l), and we will put together a response
not only from the Board, but the community at large!
Wikimania 2010 (and beyond!)
Unfortunately the UK wasn't successful in our bid to bring the 2010
Wikimania Conference to Oxford. Wikimania 2010 will be held in
Gdansk, Poland and we hope that as many UK participants will be able
to attend and support the conference. The chapter sends its thanks
out to all those volunteers who helped in creating the bid. Despite
this, the chapter has already made a name for itself having been
approached by the Greater Manchester Tourist Board in supporting a
future Wikimania Bid and any conferences that we may wish to hold
within Manchester.
Currently our goal is the running of a Wikimedia UK conference next
year in conjuntion with our AGM. The location for the 2010 AGM has
not been set, and members are invited to send in suggestions for
where they believe would be able to host such a conference. For more
information, or if you have any ideas for WMUK's involvement in
conferences or wish to help out with any of the above contact our
Conferences Director at conferences(a)wikimedia.org.uk
Initiatives
Wikimedia UK is currently soliciting ideas for Initiatives for the
chapter to pursue! Under the helm of our new Initiatives Director,
Zeyi He [http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Board#Zeyi_He], we are looking
to develop and take forward as many initiatives as we can - and we
need your input and assistance in making as many of these work as
possible. The Board is looking at a minimum of 3 completed
initiatives before the next AGM - so if you have any ideas, you can
either list them on the Ideas page [http://uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/
Initiatives/Ideas], develop them on the Proposals page [http://
uk.wikimedia.org/wiki/Initiatives/Proposals], or contact our
Initiatives Director at initiatives(a)wikimedia.org.uk!
Wikipedia Loves Art
The chapter supported the "Wikipedia Loves Art" [http://
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WLART] photography contest in
February and since then the participating museums have been hard at
work checking each photograph for compliance with the copyright rules
and awarding bonus points for particularly good images. They have now
started to announce winners [http://www.flickr.com/groups/
wikipedia_loves_art/] and we hope to be able to announce the winners
from the Victoria & Albert museum shortly.
Other Chapters' Activities
A mailing list has been started for Wikimedians in Ireland [https://
lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaie]. Additionally,
several events have been or will be held in conjunction with museums
- at the start of May WM Argentina held Wikipedia invade el Museo de
La Plata [http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Wikipedia:Wikipedia_invade_el_Museo_de_La_Plata], and next month the
Netherlands chapter, Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland, will be running
Wiki Loves Art [http://www.vrijebeelden.nl/].
