Report of Wikimedia Nederland for October and November 2009
Fundraising
Wikimedia Nederland participates in the Wikimedia Fundraiser for 2009/2010.
As a result of the switch of banks earlier this year, Wikimedia Nederland
implemented iDEAL as a new payment-option for Dutch customers, used by over
70% of all Dutch internet-shoppers. In the first few weeks of fundraising,
iDEAL already proved to be the main gateway for donors from the Netherlands.
General Assemblee
On October 24, a general assemblee was held. Topics discussed included past
and planned activities, the 2010 budget and the long term development of the
association.
Multimedia Meeting
Wikimedia NL was able to fund two participants to the Multimedia Meeting in
Paris on 6-8 November organized by Wikimedia France. Also someone was sent
to the strategy discussion meeting on internal roles the day before the
multimedia meeting.
Tropenmuseum
After the cooperation in Wiki Loves Art/NL and also the ongoing cooperation
on the exhibition on Maroon culture the Tropenmuseum has released some
35.000 images about Indonesia through Wikimedia Commons. Several of the
images have been digitally restored and some became featured pictures in
addition we have been asked to restore six images that were selected by the
Tropenmuseum. The Indonesian chapter intends to translate the descriptions
in to Indonesian.

Coming Up
- Community Workshop: 19 December, Nijmegen
- New Year cards
Summary of key points:
- Participated on two exhibitions (in Havlickuv Brod and Olomouc)
- First edition of "Wikimedium" journal
- Free travel shirt was in Prague (national TV coverage included)
- We're on Facebook now.
== External ==
Wikimedia Czech Republic took part in another public exhibition. In
October, we presented Wikipedia and other projects at the Autumn Book
Fair in Havlickuv Brod, which was first association's presentation of
this kind outside Prague. Again in a cooperation with the Microsoft
Czech Republic, who provided the association with its "Microsoft
Surface" presentation equipment, the display was appraised again by many
of the visitors.
In August, Wikimedia Czech Republic published first edition of the
Wikimedium journal. On 14 pages, the magazine contained an interview
with Wikimedia Poland's member and Wikimedian Wojciech Pedzich,
information about Creative Commons-licensing of Wikipedia, gallery of
the best images of the Wikimedia Commons, reports from Wikimedia Czech
Republic activities, news from Czech and foreign projects and an
entertainment page with Michael Jackson trivia found on Wikimedia
projects and a quiz. Wikimedium will be published four times a year as a
full-color PDF document. It is available for download in Czech language
at wikimedium.wikimedia.cz .
In September, the Wikipedia symbol Free Travel-Shirt visited Prague
thanks to German Wikimedian Ukko. Members of the Wikimedia Czech
Republic first took part in the Czech Wikimedians with the shirt, one
day later the visit of the shirt in the Municipal Library of Prague was
organized, where several Wikimedians were received by Mr. Tomas Rehak,
the library's director. The Municipal Library will be the venue of the
first Czech Wikiconference at the beginning of the December.
The nation-wide broadcaster Czech Television's crew covered the visit of
the shirt in the Municipal Library, which was later reported at the
beginning of the 20-minutes teleview 'Milenium' (available in Czech at
www.ct24.cz/vysilani/2009/10/27/209411058031027-11:35-milenium/?streamtype=…
).
Wikimedia Czech Republic started promoting its activity at the social
network Facebook, which came out a potentially strong communication
medium. (Currently our page http://www.facebook.com/Wikimedia.CR has 115
fans.)
In November, we also parcicipated on book exhibition LIBRI 2009 in Olomouc.
Preparations are under way for our first conference, which is going to
happen on 5th December in Prague Municipal Library. The main topic of
the conference are sources in Wikipedia.
== Inter-Chapter ==
Due to financial reasons, Wikimedia Czech Republic decided to cancel the
trip of its representative to the Wikimania 2009. Ad hoc inter-chapter
contacts were held by mail.
== Internal ==
The Board evaluated the first half of the year from the view of the
adopted Activities Plan for 2009. One third of the tasks had been
fulfilled at that moment and major steps were undertaken to fulfill
another one third of the tasks at a proper time.

3. Multimedia Usability Initiative & Strategy
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In August 2009, Wikimedia France voted a budget of 45k€ for the
organisation of an international meeting focused on usability on
Commons, especially set on rewamping the interface, the upload process
and review community practices.
This meeting happened in Paris November 6th trhough 8th, gathered 30
people from different backgrounds, technical as well as users of
Commons, or people involved in partnerships with galleries, Libraries,
Museums and Archives (GLAM). The meeting, co-organised with the
Wikimedia Foundation was a success and yielded promising results.
Notes about the meeting can be found on meta, and notes taken and
conclusions reached during the meeting can be found on the usability
wiki.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Websites revamped
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The external websites of Wikimedia France have been revamped, in a
partnership with a professional webdevelopment company. They consist
of three core websites, an institutional website, a donation website
and a blog). The institutional website runs on Drupal, an open source
CMS. (The White House copied us and adopted it for their own website a
month after us!)
Wikimedia France still uses Mediawiki as collaborative tool for
members and board members discussions.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. Wikimédia France Calendar
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Under the lead of Adrienne Alix (User:Serein), French community
members put together a beautiful week-calendar with photos of Commons
and quotes from various Wikimedia Projects. It can be found here:
http://www.inlibroveritas.net/agenda-wikimedia.html
Part of the proceeds will go to support Wikimédia France's activites.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. Fundraising
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wikimedia Foundation driven fundraiser started at the beginning of
November and lasts for two months. It is Wikimédia France's main
financing source, so it is important to make it a success.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Press
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Three press releases have been sent:
*About the 5 million files on Commons
*About the 1.5 millionth article on Wikitionary
*About launching the Calendar sale

------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. Hiring
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wikimedia France's board has voted the hiring of a permanent staff
member for 2010.
Their first great project will be the organisation of a Wikipedia
Academy-like event, around Humanities, and they will be gradually
taking over administration, PR, Communication and Member Management of
the association.
The hiring process is underway and things are looking good so far.
Final interviews will happen in January.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. Figures
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wikimédia France counts 132 members (membership fees up to date), as
of November 1st.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
The original version of this newsletter is a collaborative work of
Wikimedia France's members.
Open Beelden
The media institute *Sound and Vision* launched in cooperation with the
Kennisland Foundation the initiative "Open Beelden" (open images), a website
with audiovisual collections that can be reused simply under a free license.
As a part of this, over 200 Polygoon items have been released under
CC-BY-SA. 16 videos have been uploaded already to Wikimedia Commons:
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Polygoonjournaal . Wikimedia
Nederland is working together with Sound and Vision to see how they can
continue to give an added audiovisual value to Wikipedia.

Small subsidies: Writing Contest
Wikimedia Nederland has awarded a "small subsidy" to support a writing
contest in the Dutch Language Wikipedia. Wikimedia Nederland has € 1000
available for requests from Wikimedia editors for small projects within the
goals of the association.
Free Cultural Heritage Conference
Wikimedia Nederland is planning to organize a one day conference on
Wikimedia and Free Cultural Heritage by spring 2010 to inform the cultural
heritage institutions and other interested about the possibilities and
advantages of making (digital) material freely available. The conference
aims explicitly to lead to follow up initiatives to make material actually
available under free licenses. We are currently working on finding
sufficient funding for the organization and contacting the right partners.

Summer Barbecue
On July 4, Wikimedia NL organized a summer barbecue for Wikimedians in
Eindhoven, with no specific agenda. The meeting was intended for
socializing, and was visited by more than 30 people.
European Lobby
July 18, Wikimedia NL organized a chapters meeting in Brussels with European
Legislation Lobby as a topic. Representatives from six chapters and the
Wikimedia Foundation participated in the meeting, to get to know each other,
each others intentions and to agree on the basics for the lobby. Based on
these outcomes and further meetings, a strategy for the legislation lobby
will be formed.
Wiki Loves Art
As reported before, Wiki Loves Art was a success with over 5400 photos
submitted. The photos have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons under free
licenses and the winners have been selected from the submitted photos (see
WikiLovesArt.nl <http://www.wikilovesart.nl/>).
Tropenmuseum
Wikimedia Nederland and the Tropenmuseum are cooperating on an exhibition on
the Maroon culture from Suriname. As part of this cooperation, the
Tropenmuseum has made over 2100 photos available through Wikimedia Commons.
Content generated through the Wikimedia projects as part of this cooperation
might be included in the exhibition.
More information:
http://nl.wikimedia.org/wiki/Bestand:Persbericht_samenwerking_Tropenmuseum-…
Translation Rally
With the financial support (out of the international investments budget) of
Wikimedia NL, Stichting Open Progress was able to run another Translation
Rally to get MediaWiki translated better in all languages. € 1000 was
divided over people with more than 500 valid translations within the week.
As a result, 36,000 new translations were added and 36 valid claims were
made by translators.
Wikimania
Lodewijk participated in Wikimania in Buenos Aires, and held a discussion
session on European Legislation Lobby. The discussion resulted in a list of
potential topics to persue in such a lobby and has been submitted to the
chapters as input for the discussion.
Wikimedia Sveriges chapters report for May, June and July 2009 is now
online on meta and copied below for your convenience.
==Chapters meeting==
Three board members attended the chapters meeting and another three
members on the developers meetup. I gave us a lot of inspiration and
energy. Thanks to WMDE for a great event and to all attendees for being so
great!
==Wikipedia Academy==
Our chairman, Lennart Guldbrandsson attended the Wikipedia Academy in USA.
He was cited in Wikipedia Signpost. [1] The cooperation with NIH has
reached Swedish media. [2]
==GLAM==
THe NPG has reached Swedish media, mainly translating English media. [3]
On a more positive note we have several good contacts with different
institutions and we can hopefully soon announce the first donation of
pictures to WMSE.
==Board meetings==
We had two board meetings this period and both minutes are online in
Swedish. [4][5]
==University course==
This fall the first University course in Wikipedia will start (7,5 ECTS
credits).[6] WMSE is not directly involved doing this, but we support it
and a member is the teacher and as litterature Lennart's book Så fungerar
Wikipedia (How Wikipedia works) will be used.
==Seminars and conferences==
We have held two talks about what Wikipedia is, for Swedish tourist
journalists and secondary upper class teachers.
