Hello Analytics,
WMDE will onboard their data analyst soon. Adam and me (with help of various others) compiled an onboarding document to collect all™ the needed information to get started.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1lSP4aamtkv1XI5euC1NAGWeci9M39ZiXkkmB9vCw...
It maybe useful for us to copy some over to Wiki to pages below https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics
We could create a "getting started" page from (or is there already one which I oversaw?)
Jan
We have some onboarding docs https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Onboarding, but no getting started docs like this. I like it, thanks for working on it. I added information about Dashiki and Reportupdater. I think we should call this "Getting Started" and have it be the first link from wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics at the top, with a little explanation. Let us know when you're ready and we'll take over from there and maintain it. But right now it's a bit angled towards Wikidata, maybe we can make those details a sub-page, like Getting Started / Wikidata?

As you spotted there are indeed some gaps (Dashiki & Report updater), mainly due to the fact that WMDE don't use them currently.
I agree that if we want this as a general starting guide we should move the WMDE specific stuff out / somewhere else.

Our onboarding docs are geared to engineers joining the analytics team, they are updated everytime we hire, thus they have not been updated for now 4 months. By all means add more info, we want to keep those focus on the analytics arena so gerrit and other mediawiki-wide tools should be documented elsewhere: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/ Onboarding
Note that Data access gudelines are (for now) only internal: https://office. wikimedia.org/wiki/Data_access_guidelines

Hi there,
I am the Data Analyst referred to in:
"WMDE will onboard their data analyst soon" : )
Please, just a quick check to see whether I get the things right - feedback appreciated:
- I need to open an Wikitech account (DONE); - I need to register for ToolLabs (DONE; Waiting for Admin confirmation, presumptively on my Talk Page to appear); - I register my public RSA key with the Labs, and then what: someone assigns an instance to me, and then I start installing R and whatever I need there?
Thanks a lot. I appreciate the creation of the Onboarding Data Analysis Document, but I am trying to get to a descent server in the Wikimedia environment as soon as I can :)
With best regards,

We probably do not need to spam the many, many subscribers of this list (note is a public list, not a WMF one) with these questions. Do talk internally with your DE team and I am sure questions can be answered on irc on #wikimedia-analytics and #wikimedia-labs.
Please see: https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Onboarding#Wikitech.2FLabs with answers to some of your questions
Ping me off list when you are mostly set up and have a wikimedia.de account and we can set up a monthly sync up with analytics team.

The machines in labs arn't too bad, i think you can get 8G of ram, but you'll want to request access to our analytics cluster for the servers we run ad-hoc and repeated analysis from.It will take a few days for the ops-request to go through to get you analytics access. It looks like there is a group 'analytics-wmde' that you will request access to.

The documentation for these steps has room for improvement. In particular, the SSH setup has been tripping up several people in the past. When we recently onboarded Zareen as data analysis intern in the Reading department, she wrote up some notes about the gaps that needed filling in in her case. These are linked at https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Production_shell_access#Other_tips and might be helpful here too. Overall this part of the documentation could use an overhaul with input from someone who has a detailed understanding of the server setup.

It maybe useful for us to copy some over to Wiki to pages below https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics
We could create a "getting started" page from (or is there already one which I oversaw?)

Opened up https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T160941 to track improving the SSH setup instructions. Any feedback beyond the notes on-wiki is appreciated.

Hi there,
I am the Data Analyst referred to in:
"WMDE will onboard their data analyst soon" : )
Please, just a quick check to see whether I get the things right -
feedback
appreciated:
- I need to open an Wikitech account (DONE);
- I need to register for ToolLabs (DONE; Waiting for Admin confirmation,
presumptively on my Talk Page to appear);
- I register my public RSA key with the Labs, and then what: someone
assigns
an instance to me, and then I start installing R and whatever I need
there?
Thanks a lot. I appreciate the creation of the Onboarding Data Analysis Document, but I am trying to get to a descent server in the Wikimedia environment as soon as I can :)
With best regards,
Goran S. Milovanovic, Data Analyst, WMDE

As a general comment, making onboarding material public, even if it consists of collections of links, can be helpful for orienting volunteers, students, and outside researchers as well.
Good luck, Goran.

Thanks. I am documenting all the steps, and of course I will share once when everything is settled and I feel confident enough about my own understanding of the process.

Goran:
These are wikis , feel free to update: https://wikitech. wikimedia.org/wiki/Analytics/Onboarding#Wikitech.2FLabs as needed. As I said we update onboarding docs every time we hire and thus these are going to be 4 months out of date.
Thanks,
Nuria

Thank you, Nuria. I have already completed several steps from the page that you have suggested, and Adam Shorland's support was really great on the IRC too. Thank you very much!
