80 attend Wikipedia in Education Meet-Up
A crowd of more than 80 people interested in Wikipedia's use in education around the world attended a meet-up held during Wikimania last week. Co-hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation and the Saylor Foundation, the event allowed people from around the world to share their experiences using Wikipedia in classrooms and what they hope to do in the future. A follow-up meeting delved more into details of how to get programs started and sharing learnings, with promises to provide more cross-country communication about programs on-wiki. Photos from the event are available on Wikimedia Commons.

Cairo Pilot wraps up successfully with conference
Professors, Ambassadors, students, and supporters of the Cairo Pilot of the Wikipedia Education Program gathered in Egypt July 4-5 to share their experiences and celebrate the incredible accomplishments of the students. Seven classes participated in the pilot last term, with 54 students editing. Those students added the equivalent of 372 printed pages of content to 246 unique Arabic Wikipedia articles, and the Cairo Pilot succeeded in confirming that the proof of concept of students editing Wikipedia works in Egypt. Read more about the conference.

Class assignment inspires growth of Kazakh Wikipedia
Rauan Kenzhekhanuly first started editing Wikipedia as a student in Professor Nicco Mele's course at Harvard University on the first term of the U.S. pilot of the Wikipedia Education Program, the Public Policy Initiative. Rauan was so inspired by the assignment that he returned to his native Kazakhstan and started invigorating the community around growing the Kazakh Wikipedia. Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales recognized his efforts by naming him the Wikipedian of the Year last year during Wikimania, an honor that included a travel stipend for Rauan to attend Wikimania this year. Read more about Rauan's work.

Friday deadline for U.S. courses next term
U.S. professors interested in using Wikipedia as a teaching tool in their courses with support from Wikipedia Ambassadors next term must submit a 5-minute application by Friday, July 20. The new application process this year will allow us to pair Ambassadors with professors based on more efficient criteria, so professors doing longer Wikipedia assignments will receive more support than professors who are only doing short assignments. Professors will not receive Ambassador support if they have not filled out the short application by July 20, so if you are interested in participating for fall 2012, make sure you fill out the form today!

Application process opens for U.S., Canada classes
New for fall 2012, professors from the United States and Canada interested in participating in the Wikipedia Education Program will need to apply to join the program. With increasing demand for support from Ambassadors, we need to prioritize classes that are contributing the most content -- words or illustrations -- to Wikipedia articles, so we've created an application process designed to better pair professors with Ambassadors. The deadline for applications is July 20, so apply today!

Hi, Ambassadors!
I'm trying to finish up an accurate inventory of which Campus Ambassadors
can still support a professor/students for the coming term. I've emailed a
lot of you individually, if you have the option available on-wiki and are
listed on the Campus Ambassador page[1]. I'm working on updating all lists
(email mailing list/English Wikipedia/Outreach wiki/my own database) for
those of you who are sticking around for next term.
Please take a few moments to send me a quick email (off-list) of whether
you can still support a professor for Fall 2012. Please do include the
school(s) where you are available. You should also know that we'll soon
have Campus Ambassador orientation ready online for each of you to
complete/use as an additional resource to the training you've already
gotten. This means we can also pretty easily train new Campus Ambassadors,
so any friends who may be interested can contact me about joining the
program.
Thank you so much!

Subject: Office hour: Wikipedia Education Program
The Wikimedia Foundation staff for the Wikipedia Education Program (Frank Schulenburg, Annie Lin, LiAnna Davis, Jami Mathewson, and I) will be hosting a scheduled public office hour in the #wikimedia-office IRC channel.
Date: Thursday, 21 June 2012
Time: 16:00 – 17:00 UTC (noon-1 p.m. EDT, 9-10 a.m. PDT) (click here for local time)
Topic: Wikipedia Education Program
This will be a general question and answer session. We have several exciting new developments coming up: a transition from staff-led programs to volunteer-led programs in North America, and a new piece of software for Wikipedia that will help us manage the program better. We also are happy to answer general questions you may have about the program.
If you have questions or concerns about the programs, or are simply curious, this is a great opportunity to gain better insight into these programs. If you are unable to attend, a link to the chat log will be posted at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours for public viewing following the session.
Details on how to join the session are included below. We look forward to chatting with you!

Hi, Ambassadors!
This Sunday, June 24th, the Wikimedia Foundation will be hosting an
'Article Review Party' to review the quality of student articles from
Spring 2012[2]. The event is for Bay Area Wikipedians who can spare 1 – 4
hours to help review articles while eating some delicious food and enjoying
everyone's company.
If you are in the area and can come, please add your name. You can email me
at jmathewson(a)wikimedia.org for more details about getting to the office
(149 New Montgomery Street, San Francisco).

Canadian professor writes of her experience
University of British Columbia Professor Tina Loo published a blog post on the Network in Canadian History and Environment (NiCHE) site about why she was happy to use Wikipedia in her classroom last term. Professor Loo's students wrote on North American environmental history topics, and she found the assignment to be well worth her efforts. Read her exceptional piece on why Wikipedia is good for higher education.

Students in Mexico use Wikipedia for IB requirements
Seven students at ITESM-CCM in Mexico are part of a pilot program led by Wikipedian Leigh Thelmadatter to use Wikipedia editing to fulfill the community service requirements of their International Baccalaureate diplomas. The students needed to put in 80 hours of community service, which they did first through English-to-Spanish translations, then with creating articles on their own. Students also worked at an edit-a-thon at the the Museo de Arte Popular in Mexico City. Learn more about the project on the Wikimedia Foundation blog.

Cairo outreach event encourages students to edit
Campus Ambassadors in Cairo, Egypt, led an outreach event on May 2 to encourage students to edit the Arabic Wikipedia. Ambassadors and students from the British Engineering Institution in Egypt taught Cairo University engineering students to contribute to engineering-related articles. Students who are participating in the Cairo Pilot joined the event as well. See more about the event, including some photos.
