U.S. and Canada program moves to Wiki Ed Foundation
Later this month, the Wikipedia Education Program in the United States and Canada will officially move from being directed by the Wikimedia Foundation to being directed by a new nonprofit, the Wiki Education Foundation. The Wiki Education Foundation is run by volunteer academics and Wikipedians. Jami Mathewson will continue as program manager for the United States and Canada, but as an employee of the Wiki Education Foundation now. For more on the transition, see a blog post from Wiki Education Foundation board member Mike Christie.

New video offers advice on avoiding plagiarism
In light of the plagiarism research reported last month, we've updated the guidance we offer students during the online training with a new video. Many students struggle to understand how close is too close when it comes to paraphrasing, or fail to understand how important it is to properly attribute quotations to appropriate sources. This video clearly explains what plagiarism is, why it's bad for Wikipedia, and what happens when editors get caught plagiarizing. Watch the video.

Program aligned with themes at WISE conference
The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) took place in Doha from October 29-31. More than 1,000 attendees from all around the world — including Wikimedia Foundation Arab World Education Program Manager Tighe Flanagan — took part in the three-day event, which featured keynotes, panels, and discussions with leaders and innovators in the education sector. Digital/web literacy and open education were constant themes during the summit. Tighe also explored the possibility of expanding the Wikipedia Education Program Arab World into universities in Qatar. Take advantage of the WISE 2013 video archives and see what people were saying.

More than 50 gather to celebrate third Egypt term
On October 3, more than 50 professors and students gathered at Ain Shams University to celebrate the success of the third term of the Wikipedia Education Program Egypt. Students in Egypt have been some of the most active contributors in the education program globally, contributing more than 12 million bytes of content last term alone. Professors from each university as well as student faculty leaders shared their experiences with the group, encouraging them to continue to participate in the program in the future. Professors, students, and volunteer Wikipedia Ambassadors were recognized for their contributions with certificates. Check out pictures from the event on Commons!

US Ambassador Emily Temple-Wood profiled
Despite being only 19 years old, Emily Temple-Wood has contributed an incredible amount of content to Wikipedia; after all, she started when she was 12. A Wikipedia Ambassador for the Wikipedia Education Program United States and Canada, Emily (who edits under the username Keilana) is a sophomore at Loyola University in Chicago and can be found supporting a number of efforts on Wikipedia outside the Education Program, including creating and expanding articles on women scientists, a particular area of interest for her. Read more about Emily on her profile on the Wikimedia blog.

Plagiarism study results released
One complaint we've heard from many English Wikipedia experts is that students in the Wikipedia Education Program in the United States and Canada often plagiarized in the articles they created or expanded for Wikipedia as part of their class assignments. While plagiarism is certainly a widespread problem throughout academia, we had heard anecdotally from several professors that the Wikipedia assignment led to less plagiarism than they were used to in their classes. So we investigated by doing a larger plagiarism study comparing our students' work to that of other new editors and experienced editors. While caveats apply, we found that students plagiarize less than other new editors, but more than experienced editors. See the results.

Nepal kicks off Wikipedia Education Program pilot
The Wikimedians of Nepal user group ran a small pilot of the Wikipedia Education Program this summer at Islington College in Kathmandu. Around 150 students expressed interest in participating in the education program pilot, but the team narrowed it to 25 of the most promising students. Ambassadors trained students in editing, and they each worked on three different articles on the Nepali Wikipedia, including adding photos they'd taken and writing the article. Students who successfully completed the assignment even received a "Wikipedia Drivers License"! Read more about the pilot program in Nepal.

Why student learning matters, too
Jami Mathewson, the program manager for the United States and Canada versions of the Wikipedia Education Program, authored an op-ed post for the Wikimedia blog about why student learning matters. In Jami's post, she argues that the benefits of doing Wikipedia assignments are more than just improving Wikipedia articles. Students gain real-world skills they would not achieve through a more traditional assignment. Read Jami's op-ed.

Students successfully complete online training
One year ago, students in the United States and Canada program started using a new resource: an online training designed to teach them the basics of contributing to Wikipedia. After two terms of listening to student feedback and making minor adjustments to the training content, the training has taken off. Already, more than 300 students have successfully completed the online training this term, and more and more professors are assigning their students the training as part of their coursework. See the training.

Arab World program wraps up third term
Students in Jordan, Egypt, and Algeria put the finishing touches on Arabic Wikipedia articles they wrote as part of their coursework this term. And the numbers are outstanding. Students this term contributed 12.79 million bytes to the Arabic Wikipedia, more than doubling last term's 5.97 million bytes. The steady growth of student contributions to the Arabic Wikipedia each term is incredible, and it is thanks to the hard work of volunteer leaders throughout the Arab World. US, Canada programs prep for new term
The new term is upon us in the United States and Canada, and many professors and Ambassadors have already begun creating Course Pages on the MediaWiki education extension on the English Wikipedia. If you are a professor who plans to use Wikipedia in the classroom this term, please make sure you have created the page for your class. You may need to get in touch with a Wikipedia Education Program representative to receive the appropriate user rights, which you can request on the Education Noticeboard. You can also email jmathewson(a)wikimedia.org if you still need support in finalizing your assignment, finding an Ambassador, or creating your Course Page. Create your Course Page.

Hello fellow Ambassadors,
I've signed up to present on how I, and a college professor, implemented
the Wikipedia Education Program in a class with undergraduate students in
the Global STEMx Virtual Conference<http://stemxcon.com/page/2013-conference>.
My workshop is titled "Transforming learners into global citizens through
Wikipedia<http://stemxcon.com/forum/topics/transforming-learners-into-global-citizens…>"
and is scheduled for Friday, 9/20 at 9:00am EST. This is a totally open,
free, virtual conference that truly is global.
I've also submitted proposals to present at the Homeschool/Unschool/Democratic
Education conference <http://www.homeschoolconference.com/> (also totally
open, free, online and global), and Computers in
Libraries<http://www.infotoday.com/cil2014/CallForSpeakers.asp>(unfortunately,
not free or virtual, but still a good conference). I do not
yet have the links (or even know if my proposal will be accepted) at these
latter conferences yet. However, I wanted to send out this announcement as *all
of these conferences are still accepting (and still need) good presenters,
and I can't think of a better way to get out there and reach a LOT of
global educators!!*
Please join me and submit a proposal to present--you can make a
presentation from 20-45 minutes in length, virtually, from any computer in
the world. *Also, sign up as a participant, or as a conference volunteer to
assist in moderating sessions! Since this is a free conference, they really
need help in any way they can get it.*
Thank you!

Charles University supports education program
In a statement released this month, the rector of Charles University in Prague, His Magnificence Vaclav Hampl, gave his official support to Czech education program, called "Students Write Wikipedia" (Studenti píší Wikipedii). The statement reads, in part, "This highly appropriate, useful activity has my unequivocal support. I would like to encourage all those who, in the course of their pedagogical activities or studies, or in their free time, contribute to Wikipedia. I would recommend that all pedagogues at the University consider whether involvement in the ‘Students write Wikipedia’ project would not be a suitable way of supporting their educational goals."
