Hello all,
This has been the largest GCI ever with 25 orgs, 710 mentors, and over 3500
students completing an astounding *16,437 *tasks -- There was a total of
1340 students complete 6,379 tasks in 2016 for reference.
Org admins are now selecting the program finalist (5 students) from the top
10 students.
These 5 students will all be considered as Finalists and will receive the
GCI finalist hoodie and a special certificate designating them as a
finalist for GCI 2017. The two Grand Prize Winners will receive a 4 day
trip for themselves and a parent or legal guardian to Google headquarters
in California.
Thank you all for your great work and participation. Special thanks to all
those here who volunteered to mentor GCI 2017 in Wikimedia.

Hello Everyone!
Hope you're all doing great? The AWMD core team has had some requests and
internal discussions about the migration from #wiki-dev-africa to
#wikimedia-dev-africa since it's an official Wikimedia project and has to
be in the Wikimedia IRC channel namespace. To understand what this means,
see this: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC/Channels.
Charitwo <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Charitwo> who is a member of
the IRC Contact group for Wikimedia Foundation filed a request about us
considering the migration since Wikimedia Foundation owns the #wikimedia-*
namespace, so the AWMD core team reconsidered to move.
>From now, anyone trying to join the old channel (#wiki-dev-africa) will be
redirected to the new channel automatically but it would be good to note
that this will only last for 60 days. So do well to practice joining the
new channel (by default) which is: *#wikimedia-dev-africa.* Also, all bots
which were attached to the old channel to help us track activities, we'll
patch it to redirect to the new channel.
We've solved this problem in such a way that hitches has been greatly
minimized. It's usually not an easy one :) In addition, we also apologize
for any inconveniences this would have caused you! Have a blissful day!

Just a reminder theres a meeting in #wiki-dev-africa for all AWMD members and others who have worked with us, for more details please see, https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T183017

Hello all,
Just to make a kind reminder that Google Code In
<https://codein.withgoogle.com/> program is ending soon and students have
less than 5 days left to claim a new task. If you know a high school
student you can introduce to GCI, its time to do that. There are still some
few simple tasks. Its a great experience our juniors can have here.
Let introduce our junior ones to Open Source.
Thanks,

Wikimedia Developer Support offers a support channel for all developers
working with MediaWiki or other Wikimedia related technologies: APIs,
extensions, skins, gadgets, templates, bots, tools, apps, data sets… If you
need help with a technical problem, just ask.
This website is based on Discourse. If you have questions about how to use
it, check https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Discourse/Help
Your feedback about this website is very important! Bug reports, feature
requests and other suggestions are very welcomed.
IMPORTANT
Wikimedia Developer Support is a pilot project running on a test
instance. This is not the final deployment. More about this project at
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Discourse
* Although the migration of users and content to the production server is
theoretically possible, at this point it is not guaranteed (T184461).
* The authentication system for this test instance is not what will be used
if this project makes it to production.
* If you have a Wikimedia account, use the same email when registering
here. This is how your username and content will remain yours if/when
Wikimedia single sign-on is implemented (T124691).
* Do not reuse your “real” passwords when creating an account in this test
instance.

> On Wikidata, the "save" button when you edit is now called "publish". This means all Wikimedia wikis have now changed from "Save page" to "Publish changes". This is to help new editors understand what it does. [1][2]
> Some edits will get an automatic tag on all wikis. This will happen when making a page a redirect, blanking a page, removing almost all content, undoing an edit, or rolling back an edit. You can see the tags for example in the recent changes feed, article history, user contributions or on your watchlist. Some wikis had already marked edits like these in other ways. [3]
> Special:UnusedFiles shows files that have been uploaded but are not used. It will show a file that is not used on the wiki it has been uploaded to, even if the file is used on another wiki. The new Special:GloballyUnusedFiles page on Commons only shows files that are not used on any wiki. [4]
> Structured discussions now uses the 2017 wikitext editor instead of its old custom one. This will work with your preference for wikitext or visual editor. The documentation has been updated. [5][6]
> Problems
>
> Older versions of the Chrome web browser on mobile devices may see the PDF download button, but it does not work. The developers are looking into the problem. [7]
> With the new filters in the recent changes, "Exclude selected" in "Namespaces" did not work for "Saved filters" between 13 December and 2 January. When you loaded the saved filter all other namespaces were excluded instead. This has now been fixed. If you made any changes to your saved filters between 13 December and 2 January, you need to save your filters with excluded namespaces again. [8]
> The latest version of Google Chrome broke how section links are shown in the address bar. You now see #R%C3%A9sum%C3%A9 instead of #Résumé even if MediaWiki did not encode it that way. This happened in early December. This problem has been solved. The fix will be in Chrome 64 (23 January) or Chrome 65 (6 March). [9]
> Some POST requests to the API took longer than usual in parts of December. This affected the Wikidata UI and some gadgets the most. It has now been fixed. [10]
> Changes later this week
>
> Wikidata will be moved to its own database servers. This is because it is growing and needs more resources. Because of this you will be able to read but not editWikidata and the German Wikipedia between 06:00 and 06:30 UTC on 9 January. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. This includes editing the language links on other wikis. [11]
> The font size in the editing window will change slightly for some users. It will now look the same on all browsers and operating systems. [12][13]
> The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 January. It will be on all wikis from 11 January (calendar).
> WikiEditor's ResourceLoader modules have been simplified to one: ext.wikiEditor. All the other modules are now deprecated aliases and should be removed. [14]
