Hello everyone,
Wikimedia is delighted to participate the eleventh time in the Outreachy
<https://www.outreachy.org/> internship program. The application period for
interns opens September 7th and will be due October 23rd. In the meanwhile,
we need your help -- we are looking for *suitable projects* and
*mentors*. Projects
could be anything ranging from programming, user experience, documentation,
illustration and graphical design, to data science.
If you would like to feature a project / become a mentor:
1. Get an overview of the selection process, and your responsibilities
before, during, and after the program
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Mentors
2. Create a task, or modify an existing one on Wikimedia's Phabricator
<http://phabricator.wikimedia.org>. Make sure it includes: *Project
title, description (summary in 8-10 lines), skills required (Phabricator
tags are welcome), mentors (required two), micro tasks (link to
Phabricator
task that must be completed to become a strong candidate).*
3. Tag the tasks with #Outreach-Programs-Projects
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/profile/2537/> and
#Outreachy-Round-15
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/view/2957/> on Phabricator.
Some more helpful information:
-
View accepted projects from previous round

-
If you know a newcomer, who meets the eligibility criteria
<https://wiki.gnome.org/Outreachy#Eligibility>and would be a good fit
for the program, encourage them to apply and follow our participation
guidelines <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Participants>.

Hi all,
Finally Derick you did bring that extension to life. I will applaud your
great work bro. Expect feedback from me as well.
concerning Gerald's Idea, I think we have two options
1) We can start our own community application (which off course will help
us acquire more skills and promote the work among us )
2) We can create a telegram group.
WRT these, I am in for both yet I strongly believe that we can grow our own
community application without any doubts.

Hello Everyone,
Hope we all are doing great? I wish to announce the beta release of version
1.0 of the SendGrid MediaWiki extension[1] which enables MediaWiki to send
emails using the SendGrid API. I have been working on this extension for
some time now and finished up the first version last night :).
It's very simple to use and all you need is a valid SendGrid API key
(config in your LocalSettings.php file "wgSendGridAPIKey") and you are
done. In addition, this can be used also by user doing development locally
and wish to send emails from their local wiki. SendGrid offers 12,000
emails to its users for an unlimited time and this can come in handy when
you are not in deployment / production environment.
I wish members of the development community to try this extension out and
see how it works and give in their feedback. A work board for this project
/ extension has been has been requested [2] and will be up soon, but the
extension is okay for use :).
Extensions that perform a similar role are; Mailgun[3] & SwiftMailer[4]. We
need more of this mailer extensions to have various varieties. :)
Thank you and hoping to get some feedback.

Hi Comrades,
Its been a month and a half already since we started this journey. So far
we have had a major event in Ghana and minor MediaWiki session in Cameroon.
As mentioned in our trainings we need participants from the countries that
have already hosted an event to pull their weights, especially Ghana, as
we are the only country that has benefitted from a full training. We are
likely to request for some slots at some global gathering of Wikimedians
(Wikimania, Wikimedia Hackathon, etc.), however we need to show that we
deserve it and I trust that won't be an issue in the coming months.
We owe the winners of last month an applause for their awesome
contributions. Read more about their work here
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T169573>, and endeavour to be at the top
this month, because at the end of this month we will award the winners of
both months and award the volunteer with the highest cumulative points. We
will be publishing the names of those on the leaderboard to the Wikimedia
Blog this month as we post a blog about the project so far.

Hello Everyone,
Hope you all are doing great? This is a monthly check-in mail to see how
the hacking on MediaWiki is coming up. Is there anything you have come
across you want me to discuss with you? Can you feature on the leaderboard
by fixing bugs this month? Below is the list of first 3 developers from
Africa;

There is also a new resource for New Developers wanting to contribute
technically in the Wikimedia movement. You can check it out here:

Hello Everyone,
I wish to announced that as at today 18th August, 2017, Wikibugs (a bot
that monitors our work board and post related activities and happenings on
it to our channel) [1] is not integrated successfully. I filed a task [2]
about this and did a patch which was merged by @Legoktm and it's
functioning now as we speak.
In addition, let's all make sure to fix bugs and solve issues as they come
in on the work board. Don't lazy around :). I am always on IRC alone but
recently I have 2 persons that have just joined me. Wikibugs bot and
@africanhope. Please you all should endeavor to be on IRC let's discuss and
work on issues. It's the only way you will grow your software engineering
in Wikimedia. Don't shy away please. Join me and let's work :)
Have a nice time and happy hacking. We are curious to see the top 3 this
month :).

Greetings all,
It is with great delight that I plead with you all to acknowledge the
effort of one of those very important Wikipedians from Africa who sees to
it that we get to contribute to WMF projects. Being nominated 2017
Wikimedian of the Year, I think you are a great gift to Africa with your
leadership.
Kudos *Felix Nartey *!!!
