Strong +1 to use Wikidata to retrieve back metadata. It's already done for authority
control identifiers, at least on en, fr and ru Wikisources (and fr has migrated all its
ids to Wikidata). I'll try to convert the Author: template of French Wikisource in
order to make it use Wikidata in the next few weeks as a sample for other Wikisources.
Yes, it would be nice to be able to add microdata to wikitext, it may improve our Google
rank. It may require a bit of development work in MediaWiki in order to make sure that
that microdata are safe on the security level but I believe it should be feasible. I'm
ready to help the person that will make this thing move forward.
The only strong issue I see is the (silly imho) microdata v.s. RDFa fight that isn't
solved yet. I think we should advocate "these two things are coexisting, we should
pick one and use it instead of waiting a few years more".

There's always been a lot of discussion about page metadata and microdata but never
any conclusion.
At some point I was tricked into believing that it.source used microdata
(
https://it.wikisource.org/wiki/Progetto:Qualità/Semantizzazione ?), but clearly it
doesn't.

Just make all those damned templates output something useful in the HTML!

The Author template has some microdata :

But it could be so much better (we should and could easily use Wikidata for a start).
