[Mediawiki-l] Deleting archived files

We allow uploads of up to 70 mb in our wiki, to support QuickTime  
movies.
I have been cleaning up videos that are not used by deleting the page  
created when the asset is uploaded, using the Delete button at the  
top, when logged in as WikiSysop.
I notice the images/archive folder is over 1 GB in size. Can I safely  
delete everything inside it, just leaving the empty archive folder?
We have a large hard drive, but create a new image every week for  
backup, and it would save time.
This is in MediaWiki 1.5.4, PHP 4.4.7, MySQL 5.0.18
Please, no lectures on updating, will do so at end of semester :-)
