Alex,
I don't think that mailing lists use that much resources. First it is 
very trivial to count how much resources mailing list spend 
(space,processor time and memory, and bandwidth). I think that one page 
on WMF wiki eat more resources in one day than this mailing list in hole 
month. And it is very easy to maintain one and to add new one. I think 
that this point is marginal.
