Hi all,
This is an important announcement (and/or reminder) about the international
jury process. Like every year, there is a jury with a mix of Photography,
Heritage and Wikimedian backgrounds that will decide what image will win
the international finale. I will announce the jury members on the WLM
website once the last jury members are confirmed.
Each national competition gets to nominate up to 10 images - usually these
are your top-10 images. Please send me a list of 10 URL's to the file
description pages of the images that are nominated for the international
finale with at least one member of your national jury in cc. They do not
have to be in order.
We will keep that list secret until you announce them publicly. If you
announced your winners publicly, please add your 10 nominees on this page:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Monuments_2015_winners We
will however include all pictures that win internationally in our jury
report (usually the top-25 is published), which will be published by the
beginning of december.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thank you.
Lodewijk
(coordinator of the international jury process this year)

Winners Announced in World’s Largest Photo Contest: Wiki Loves Monuments
*International jury selects top 10 photos from more than 321,000 worldwide.
Over the four past years, more than 1.1 million images have been submitted
to the contest.*
The international jury for Wiki Loves Monuments 2014
<http://www.wikilovesmonuments.org/> announced today the 10 winning
photographs from the world’s largest photo contest, which ran from
September 1 - 30 this year. More than 9,000 photographers uploaded over
321,000 freely-licensed photographs of historic buildings, monuments and
cultural heritage sites in 41 countries to Wikimedia Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page> for use on Wikipedia and
other free knowledge projects.
This year, the grand-prize winning photograph is an image of the Holy
Mountains Monastery <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Mountains_Lavra>, a
complex of architectural monuments of national significance in Sviatohirsk,
Ukraine, taken by Konstantin Brizhnichenko
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Brizhnichenko>. The first written
mention of the monastery was in 1526. In 1624, the monastery was officially
recognized as the Sviatohirsk Uspensky Monastery. Before World War I, the
monastery was inhabited by approximately 600 monks. During the 1930s, it
was destroyed by the Soviets, along with other numerous religious sites
throughout the Soviet Union. Today, the monastery community consists of
more than 100 people, a number that increases each year.

The winner will receive flight and accommodations in Mexico to attend
Wikimania, the international conference of the Wikimedia movement, to be
held in July 2015 in Mexico City.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Wiki Loves Monuments is
the world’s largest public photo competition. In it, people are asked to
take pictures of monuments from participating countries and to upload them
to Wikimedia Commons, enabling the photos to be used to illustrate
Wikipedia in articles about these monuments and other subjects.
“With over one million free images of heritage sites across the world, Wiki
Loves Monuments is one of the world’s most important history projects
today,” says Deror Lin, the international coordinator of the competition.
“Year after year, volunteers document hundreds of thousands of heritage
sites across the world and upload the images to the internet under a free
license for the benefit of the current andnext generations. These people
display the splendor of creativity and culture in their countries.”
The competition is organized in 41 participating countries, each focusing
on their national monuments and with their own national prizes. This year,
every participating country submitted 10 nominations to the international
jury who chose the winning pictures for the competition. A number of
countries participated in the competition for the first time, including:
Albania, Kosovo, Iraq, Ireland, Lebanon, Macedonia, Pakistan and the
Palestinian Authority.
The contest was first organized in 2010 in the Netherlands and resulted in
more than 12,500 pictures of Dutch monuments. Over the past four years more
than 1.1 million images have been submitted to the contest.

Dear all,
Thanks to the amazing help of Lusitana we are planning to print some
calendars for 2014 with images from WLM 2013.
We plan to print calendars in different parts of the world to have an
easier time with shipments (and less hassle with customs :) )
Every local group can request up to 20 calendars, the WLM
international group will cover the printing and shipping of those
calendars.
To request your calendars please fill out the form below:
http://bit.ly/WLM2014-calendars-form
*please* do that even if you don't wont any calendar and put a 0 in
the number of calendars requested.
if you don't know yet if you want more calendars, please fill out the
form with the information you do know, so that we have a contact
person.
If you want to have more calendars you can also order and extra
quantity and we will print them, but you will need to pay for those.
Based on the quotations we received so far we can expect that the
calendars will cost between 2.75 USD (2 EUR) and 4.00 USD (3.00 EUR).
We will print them in different location based on the destination.
If you want extra calendars you will get an extra question at the end
of the form where you can specify the extra quantity that you want.
We would to print and send the calendars the week after next week so
please fill out the form before Sunday 15th, December.
If you have any questions, please ask them. The sooner, the better!
Apologies for the short notice!
Thank you,
Cristian
Hi all,
thanks everyone for your hard work! I know that in some countries it was
even harder than in most, but I'm proud you all managed to send in some
nominations. We have received in total 503 nominations from 51 competitions
(52 countries).
Minor request: it seems the tool can't handle well files being moved. I
would appreciate it if we could somehow not move the files during the
judging process :) I know there's no perfection possible here since not all
nominees are known, but keep an eye out please.
A few more requests:
* Please help make sure all nominees fit the criteria. Most specifically,
the 'is an identified monument' criterium is not always followed. Meaning,
that not all photos that won a competition, have the monument clearly
identified with its identifier. This you can help with, by going through
the published winning photos and tagging them.
* Please create & fill a category with the nominated pictures. Probably we
want to create a template for this again like last year.
* If someone could set up a thankyou template that can be delivered to the
nominated authors, that would be awesome too.
The jury just started its first round - no more changes are possible to the
nominees.
I expect outcomes of the jury process by the end of November. We will
publish them around 10 December - giving us time to contact the winners,
prepare a press release and jury report. We will also get in touch with the
'winning chapters' a few days before the release.
Thanks all for making it possible that an amazing number of awesome photos
have been uploaded,
Lodewijk
Hi all,
with 12 hour to go until the submission deadline (23:59h UTC, 31 October),
we have not yet received & processed submissions from the following
countries:
*Armenia, Bolivia, Canada, Czech Republic, Egypt, El Salvador, France,
India, Jordan, Norway, Russia, Slovakia, South Africa, Switzerland, Syria,
Ukraine, United States*
Please note that this is a HARD deadline. The amount of countries that has
not submitted anything yet is worrying. If images are not submitted before
the deadline, they are most likely *not competing for the international
prizes*.
Please send your 10 nominees (less than 10 is OK, more isn't) per country
to myself and Monica Mora (in cc).
Kind regards,
Lodewijk
