Hi folks -
I know things have been quiet on this list from the Foundation side over the past few months, and we know all too well that there's not much time between now and the magic date: January 15, 2011!
Supporting Wikipedia 10th anniversary planning has largely fallen into the global development/communications section of the Wikimedia Foundation. Of course nothing will be possible without lots of broad support from our thousands of global volunteers and our chapters, as well as other partners (new and old!) and sponsors to help kick things off in style, for Wikipedia's 10th year.
Right now there are a couple of major considerations here at the Foundation, and I thought I'd start by sharing those major sections. Some areas need a lot more input from the community than others, but in all cases we want to share everything that's being planned (our ideas, your ideas, strategies, practices etc) so we can openly collaborate and try innovative ideas.
I see these as the three major areas of planning for Wiki 10 - leading up to, and during the year starting Jan 15:
1. Global celebrations (chapters and volunteer groups around the world hosting events, parties, and local festivities)
2. A 'free' birthday celebration in San Francisco (A Foundation-driven party on January 15, probably open to the public and acting as a central focus for festivities here in the Bay area)
3. On-wiki festivities and celebrations (Any number of great ideas to mark the 10th anniversary, on en:wp or other wikis - which may include tie-ins with the upcoming annual fundraiser)
We'll have more to say about each of these areas early next week, and hopefully we'll add more areas or fill those sections out soon. I'd like to use this list as a central planning space, but I'm sure there will also be on-wiki discussions taking place.
The Foundation also has a small budget to provide reasonable grants to chapters or other volunteer groups around the world to support celebrations. The conditions for receiving those grants won't be too complicated, and we hope to get that process underway soon.
Although the Foundation is largely focussed on hosting a party and helping to support activities, we want to help coordinate a central on-wiki space where all activities from chapters, project reps etc can be shared so we can create a global 'at a glance' page with all planned activities.
We also plan to post our plans for a local party in the next week or two, so you can see how we're pulling the pieces together, what partners we're talking to, and generally share our information so you have a party template to use (if you're looking for one :)
I'm glad to see some other discussions underway on the list already - hopefully we can start adding more. Please share more of your ideas and we'll get started with the planning.
Thanks! jay
Hey,
Wikipedia 10th anniversary is a wonderful event. it's a great opportunity to make a "cool" events, also with option to push and drive our current editors and volunteers by special activities and events - and with right events, it's can be get a well cover in the international press around the world.
I think Wikipedia is a global project - and one big event of it need to be something around the world. one big party all over the world, broadcasting via web.. A video taking shoots around the world. People record them self to the "wall of wishes to Wikipedia birthday" on a special website.. something that involved the fact we our global movement and using internet and social media activities.
I think we running of time. and we really need to push this issue. Good idea is to use global-notice to invite people in the next few weeks to share ideas for big and global events and projects on the meta or to to a special email account (for people not really know how to use Wiki.. but reading that..).
In any case, I think maybe we will do it on HE-WP - invitation from individual and organization to give ideas for projects and sponsorship events. The problem that we really didn't count this on our budget, and kind of saving money to Wikimania :-) I will be happy to know what the range of money the foundation can give as grants to the chapters...
Another nice and very easy thing - we can offer as part of other activies - also a context to design a spcial logo for wikipedia - the winner one will replace the Wikipedia logo for few days. it's a good context that can run also in designer forums, and designers schools - and can bring new designer volunteers to wikipedia.. a thing that is very needed and welcome on Wikipedia.
And of course, I see the all celebration also taking important part of the next Wikimania, not only because we hosting it.. :)

Hi,
I had two meetings in the last days with Google, and their YouTube regional marketing team and after also talking with YouTube team on Google HQ. We start to discuss maybe to do something together to celebrate 10th Wikipedia anniversary by a global and international project. YouTube and Wikipedia together are one of the top website in the world - and project together can be a very successful and marketing one..
The spectrum of ideas is very wide. People can share stories about how Wikipedia help them, their favorites articles, context with universities to make the most "coolest" video, by student reading articles.. it really to us what we want to do...
Now the limitations - to shy the true, I don't really know our "relationship" with YouTube. are any project with them can be something that work aginast our goal to push Commons\Kaltura? Our it's OK to do this kind of collaboration? In any case, we still need to build the project - but YouTube will probably into that..
Feedback?

Could we persuade YouTube to add an explicit option to allow free licenses, like on Flickr? :) (or is that already possible?)

This sounds fantastic!
I opend yesterday a facebook-site [1] and one on Meta [2], de [3] and en [4] where we can collect ideas and drafts to celebrate the anniversary. Ideal would be, if there would be "sister-sites" in all language-versions to synchronize the activities, like an exhibition (my personal favourite I am working on), special meetups, publications or else.
An idea, I induced at the german "Redaktion Bilder" was to make a contest, maybe on Commons to create/find a "10th anniversary Logo" [5] It would be wonderful if we can combine all this activities to a great 2011!

I am really convinced about the idea that it would be the best, to make it on Commons. The question I have is just, how is it with the trademark of the puzzle-ball if artists and/or photographers use for their creation?

I see these as the three major areas of planning for Wiki 10 - leading up to, and during the year starting Jan 15:
- Global celebrations
(chapters and volunteer groups around the world hosting events, parties, and local festivities)
- A 'free' birthday celebration in San Francisco
(A Foundation-driven party on January 15, probably open to the public and acting as a central focus for festivities here in the Bay area)
- On-wiki festivities and celebrations
(Any number of great ideas to mark the 10th anniversary, on en:wp or other wikis - which may include tie-ins with the upcoming annual fundraiser)
Thanks! jay

The puzzle globe copuld be licensed by WMF something like this:
1) A gallery page of weblink and supporter icons and such that can be used by anyone to promote "10". If you have designed one and would like to have it considered for the gallery please submit it here (address). These are licensed purely in connection with "10". They may not be used otherwise, nor is any part of them licensed for use in any manner that would suggest (whatever)...
This is the sort of thing lawyers do well. Ask them. But basically have a gallery of "official" icons, weblinks, imagery etc, anyone can submit to have their creation added, and those images only (and without amendment may be used under a suitable restricted license (non-free) in connection with the (positive) promotion and support of the 10th anniversary...
2) My idea for a 10th anniv. icon would be a slightly richer globe, with gold hinting and highlighting (not solid gold or all-gold cracks etc... highlights and slightly richer text. Subtle picking out and a bit of a hint of richness. An overlaid single "X" in a decent font, and options for text to the right side

I am really convinced about the idea that it would be the best, to make it on Commons. The question I have is just, how is it with the trademark of the puzzle-ball if artists and/or photographers use for their creation?

Hebrew Wikipedia is already offred contest to create special logo for
10th.
I think it will be great and easy opportunity to offer global contest -
we
can give small prize to the winners, and also print them and show them on Wikimania (along other posters).

Hi,
I had two meetings in the last days with Google, and their YouTube regional marketing team and after also talking with YouTube team on Google HQ.
We
start to discuss maybe to do something together to celebrate 10th Wikipedia anniversary by a global and international project. YouTube and
Wikipedia
together are one of the top website in the world - and project
together
can be a very successful and marketing one..
The spectrum of ideas is very wide. People can share stories about how Wikipedia help them, their favorites articles, context with
universities
to make the most "coolest" video, by student reading articles.. it really to us what we want to do...
Now the limitations - to shy the true, I don't really know our "relationship" with YouTube. are any project with them can be
something
that work aginast our goal to push Commons\Kaltura? Our it's OK to do this kind of collaboration? In any case, we still need to build the project - but YouTube will probably into that..
Feedback?

Thanks, Itzik - powerful platforms like YouTube are pretty good options for hosting and distributing videos and other materials around the celebration. We do have an established relationship with Google, mostly based here out of the Foundation, and we're probably going to be talking to them about some options soon. That being said, we would also want to encourage virtually any/every top web property and mission supporter project to share in such a huge milestone. We may just need to encourage them to do something/anything on or around the date. Wikipedia is a huge part of the web they love, so we see no reasons for there to be some supporters in one property and not in another.
With Youtube or other proprietary tech platforms I think we should just be careful to ensure any supplied media is also available freely and posted on Commons or other places. Vimeo has some great options for this as well, and Kaltura is a long-term mission supporter who I know has some powerful technology to share/post video.
So in short, I think encouraging people to celebrate independently is ideal, and if WMF is approached we'll try to find ways for anyone to be a public and open supporter of the event.
The Foundation will also have some videos to share that were produced at this year's Wikimania. They're simple videos featuring individual editors from all over the world. They're not directly tied to the 10th anniversary, but I think it's the first time we've really focussed on just featuring the contributors in a simple, direct, and impactful way.
