Subject: [Wikimediaindia-l] Wikidata Advanced Training 2018, India 15 and
16 December
To: Wikimedia India Community list <wikimediaindia-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
{{Q|12068060}} {{Q|17297777}}**
An advanced Wikidata training will take place on 15-16 December 2018 in
Mumbai (most possibly). Asaf Bartov will be the primary trainer of this
workshop.
Background and objectives
In India a few Wikidata trainings took place in recent years, notably User:Asaf
(WMF)/2017 Technical trainings in India
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Asaf_(WMF)/2017_Technical_trainings_in…>.
After this training of Asaf, we saw several Wikidata developments in India
including the formation of WikiProject India, a few label-a-thons, and
Indian Independence label-a-thon. Now, we are trying to take the Wikidata
experience in India to the next level.
The plan is:
Wikimedians in India who are
- actively working on Wikidata and
- aware of basic Wikidata editing
will attend the training to
- learn more about advanced Wikidata editing
- plan future Wikidata activities in India
Please learn more about this workshop:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/CIS-A2K/Events/Advanced_Wikidata_Training_2…
The link above hopefully covers required details about the event, and, if
you have questions, please let me know. Kindly spread the words to
deserving Wikimedians.
Footnote
** Q12068060 is "Hello" and "Q17297777" is "friend" on Wikidata :-)
Thanks
Tito Dutta

Hi everyone,
The community wishlist survey is on-
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Wishlist_Survey_2019
I have submitted a proposal regarding *Tool for easy science editing using
a linked dictionary. *
During WWWW, a lot of editors were having issues with finding appropriate
medical terms in their native language as it is difficult and
time-consuming. Also, the different terms are used in different languages
for one subject matter, which leads to confusion. So, in order to
facilitate the editors to create content and also to standardize the
terminology being used, it will be better if we have some linked system of
providing translated names (for the desired language) for the standard
medical terms (in English)in a single command. I have proposed to run the
pilot on one language and depending upon the outcome, it may later be
provided to other languages.
*The link to the proposal is- *

If you feel the need is genuine and the tool might prove assistive in
uncomplicated content writing, please support the proposal.

Dear all,
I am happy to announce that the applications for "TWL Con (2019 India)"[1],

discuss strategising TWL activities in India. This event has been primarily
designed to understand the needs and document the insights from experienced
Wikimedians about libraries/sources (references) in India. More about the
event may be referred from the event page.
The application form is at: https://goo.gl/forms/NvwYttEeCFfl30rG3; last

Dear Wikimedians,
We are delighted to announce that the registration for the Wikimedia Summit
2019 [1], which will be held in Berlin at Mercure Hotel Berlin Tempelhof
Airport [2] from Friday, March 29, through Sunday, March 31, is now open!
As we have announced previously, the main focus of this redesigned event
will be the Movement Strategy Process. We invite affiliates, the Wikimedia
Foundation, its committees and Movement Strategy Working Group members to
check-in, have a look back and plan the next steps of the process together.
We would like to provide you with important information regarding the
eligibility for participation, participant number regulation, registration
procedure, specifics in regards to the travel and hotel booking as well as
the visa application process.
== Eligibility criteria and participant number regulation ==
The eligibility criteria for participating in the Wikimedia Summit 2019 are
aligned to the Affiliates’ Agreements with the Wikimedia Foundation.
Chapters, Thematic Organizations and User Groups must have shown signs of
recent activity and be up-to-date on their reporting [3] by the eligibility
deadline (December 1, 2018). Moreover, affiliations need to have been
officially recognized by the Wikimedia Foundation before January 1, 2018.
Before registering for the Wikimedia Summit, please check the eligibility
and status overview of your affiliate as well as the participant number
regulation on meta [4].
==Registration information==
To make the summit a success, it will be essential for the invited
affiliates to deliberately choose their delegates. Affiliates are asked to
send delegates that are well-informed in goings-on at the affiliate and
able to confidently answer questions about it. We have shared specific
registration advices and information regarding this [5].
We are looking forward to also welcoming members of the Wikimedia
Foundation Board of Trustees and staff, the Funds Dissemination Committee,
Simple APG committee as well as the Affiliations Committee in Berlin. We
see a huge advantage in having their representatives participate on site.
Also, the Core Team has invited Working Group members from the Movement
Strategy Working Groups.
All representatives need to register via the registration form [5]. The
registration deadline is Monday at midnight CET, December 17, 2018. Please
note that we won’t be able to accept and process registrations after this
deadline.
==Hotel and travel booking==
Depending on your group belonging the booking process varies. Therefore,
please double-check on meta [4] to which group you belong to and have the
group-specific travel and hotel booking information [6] in mind.
==Visa information==
Please visit the website of the Department of Foreign Affairs in Berlin [7]
to find out whether you need a visa for travelling to Germany. In case you
are in need of a visa, we advise you to register until November 19, 2018,
so that WMDE can assist you with the application process and send you the
required visa documents sufficiently in advance. All relevant information
and necessary steps to undertake are also described on meta [8].
Wikimedia Deutschland is looking forward to welcoming you in Berlin in
April!
Please do not hesitate to reach out to us any time via wmsummit(a)wikimedia.de
should you have any questions or comments.
Best regards,
Michelle & Cornelius

Dear Community
After a small break, I'm glad to announce the Featured Wikimedian of the
Month for November 2018, Mr. Varun Chandola.
Varun Chandola with the User Name ArmouredCyborg is a Hindi Wikimedian from
Bageshwar, Uttrakhand. He primarily edits on Hindi Wikipedia along with
English Wikipedia and also tries to document Uttrakhand by uploading
pictures on Commons. Varun started editing Wikipedia since mid 2016 and has
never looked back. He has almost 12k global edits and his created page(s)
have turned into the featured article(s) on Hindi Wikipedia. The Presently
featured article on Kashipur is also written by him. He endeavors to reduce
the number of one-line articles or stubs on Hindi Wikipedia to the lowest
number possible in the near future, expanding articles and turning them
into quality is equally important as creating new articles.
Varun's journey started on Wikipedia by editing articles on Indian Music.
He has a large collection of Music DVDs and to catalog his music library,
he started searching for information on the Internet. When he couldn't find
all the information at one place he started editing and putting the same on
Wikipedia. This turned him into a Wikipedian.
Varun presently works for Military Engineer Services and is based in
Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.
You can find his profile on our website
http://wiki.wikimedia.in/Home
If you know any such amazing & hard working community members, who deserved
to be our next featured Wikimedian, please write to me at

Yohann Thomas
Dear All,
We all know that Wikisource is one of the trending Wikimedia projects. We
are getting many new editors and new books to Indic language Wikisource's.
At the same time, we even noticed that there are many problems faced by the
new editors and a few of the existing editors. To help all of the editors
we have created a Handbook titled as *Wikisource Handbook for Indic
communities
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_Handbook_for_Indian_Comm…>.
*Which is now available[1] to everyone to make the best use of it. I
request everyone to share this with all those who are in need of support in
editing Wikisource.
Authors of the book: Bodhisattwa Mandal and Ananth Subray P V.
