Hi guys,
So just to update you on venue. Here's the thing with ihub, it's available before Saturday but I'm not sure if everyone will be able to make it. The other option's to have it next Saturday which is on 7th.
As for this Saturday, I'm looking into having the venue at NIT - that's in Westlands. I'll get back to you as soon as possible on this.
I hope connectivity speeds won't be too slow ie from Safcom / orange...
Alex.

The best option is we use connectify software and the safaricom new billing rate of unlimited browsing/download the rates are 2sh a minute and they don't restrict the data bundles as long as you are subscribed so guys will still facebook, tweet, and edit wikipedia. In my calculation 600SH will last us 5 hours. If you agree to this then it will now be the issue of venue. Alex can sort that out I am sure

Hi guys,
To probably add onto Oscar's suggestion, the ideos can support upto 9 users at a time but this should not be a worry, since there is a software called connectify which is freeware. The software is purported to turn any laptop running on windows 7 into a hotspot. But the 'hotspot' needs to be connected to the internet and then from there other users can log in with a password given by the admin of the hotspot.
The only advantage is,It is not limited to number of users. Finding another venue without wifi connection would be a cinch if we had our own internet. Thank you and have a good day.

Speaking of slow connectivity speeds, I haven't tried the IDEOS hotspot -- but while we were undertaking the Mombasa pilot, David created a hotspot for us using his Xperia X10 and it was painfully slow, yet only 2 laptops were connected to his hotspot.
Now if the connection that day was painfully slow using a high-end smartphone, I wonder how it will be with the IDEOS...
PS: no offence intended on the IDEOS users, BTW:)

I agree with Abbas. Besides the slow nature of the phone wifi it supports limited number and also heats up on over use. So my suggestion is connectify and orange broadband. Alternatively we could postpone to Saturday Next weekend as Alex has suggested.

Hi Abbas, the connectify thing that Steve is suggesting is superb. We have used it for a while and it works just fine. We even got to use it when we were in Nyeri to connect all our laptops to the net. Talk to him and he'll best explain how it works. I am just another user and not in a position to give you the details of how the hot spot is created. Thanks.
Abbas,
The speed was not slow because of the phone or anything, it was the coverage. I have managed to use the connection with 6 people and it was good if you have a good coverage. The Safaricom 2bob per minute is actually quite fast. What you could do is get a GSM router so that u can use that.
I have one GSM router that am willing lend if need be. I will be in Nairobi on Wednesday. Let me know who I can pass it to if that option is taken, its fast and it gives you freedom to do the work anywhere.
David.

Steve, U explore on the details and workability of thye software with regards to the modems. Now what remains is the venue??
Guys, Another wild suggestion guys is since some of us JKUAT) are resuming session from this week onwards, and we have access to WiFi,what if we start thinking of having Local Campus WikiSaturdays?Like why should we have JKUAT guys having there own WikiSaturday and hoipefully recruit newbies in the Campus,Strath the same and staff...Plus anyone could attend any of the WikiDays he/she wishes and can make to.It would be quite cheap for both of us...Then we could have live discussions via IRC,chats, etherpads and staff....just an idea to make voluntary manageble to all of us...:P

I like Oscar's idea of having WikiSaturdays on different campuses. And while you're negotiating that, may I suggest that the different campus groups meet on *different* Saturdays? Like Strathmore on the first Saturday of the month, JKUAT on the second etc. - that way those of us who are not affiliated with a campus (but also have less flexibility due to job and family obligations) would have more Saturdays to choose from and be enabled to attend at least one Saturday per month. For my part I know that if WikiSaturday was always the last Saturday, and *only* the last, I won't be able to attend too many of them :-(
Fwiw, and cheers,
Oliver

Hello guyz hope you had a great Easter like i had. I agree with the idea of meeting in different campuses as suggested by Oliver since it gives us the chance to explore more opportunities and avoid the boredom of doing the same thing repeatedly in the same place.

That is a very clever and brilliant idea, and I can never say it better than you did. It go a long way in popularizing the idea of Wikipedia editing, and we could turn many of our Comrades from just consumers to Contributors of Wikipedia. I recommend that we give the thought consideration.
@ Oliver, I agree with you that this idea would make it very flexible. After all, it would be very expensive for me to travel all the way from Juja to Nairobi on a fixed day, but if we alternate the WikiSaturdays, I could choose a Saturday at my convenience (time and finance) to be a guest in another Wikisaturday and could even use the opportunity to debrief the members of that group concerning progress in our home group and the strategies we are employing ;) Have a great week all.
i think Oscar's idea is brilliant! That way we do not have to hold the meetings on saturday mornings they can even be held on weekdays maybe over lunch hour or in the evenings.
