Hey David,
With regards to Openzim and Kiwix, my take is that the Openzim project is mostly involved in the development of zim files while Kiwix is a reader of zim files.
Best of luck in the Mombasa pre-visit, do take a look (on wikimedia.or.ke) at Oscar's report on his visit to Kakamega as well as Egerton's on the school's they've visited so far for some pointers on yours.
Cheers, Alex.

Guys,
I need to get my info right, which exact days are we looking at for the Mombasa pilot?
Anyone else things we need to collect more info other than what is contained in the attached document?
Am going to convert the document into a spreadsheet that we can share on Google Docs.
Also, I was looking at OpenZIM and to me, it looks more flexible and I would like your comparison views with KIWIX.
I plan on starting visits today and finish by Friday. I will have my iPad with me so all visit outcome will be updated on the Google Spreadsheet in real time.
David.

This is a good idea. Might be worth talking to Computer for Schools program and seeing if it is possible to do a mass installation of Kiwix onto the computers prior to distribution. Then any visitations you are able to do could be to help train, answer questions, etc.
I am not familiar with Computer for Schools, so I am not sure if that is possible or not, but certainly worth discussing.

Definitely,
Please see the attached document. I think also someone should upload it on the launch page on the wiki. Also, Ann's presentation should be shared, no one got to see it.

yes - Kiwix uses zimlib by openZIM to access the ZIM files.
openZIM has just developped the ZIM file format and a few tools and libraries, so readers or publishers can use the ZIM format easily.
openZIM does not make ZIM files and the only zimreader application we have is a command line tool that acts as a webserver - more of an example application. As the idea behind openZIM is all free and open source / standards everyone can look at the code, built upon it etc. Making it a standard means that all offline readers could use the same file format and therefore can freely exchange content (ZIM files) and reader applications (ZIM readers), instead of every offline application having its own, proprietary format.
That's our mission: http://openzim.org/Mission_of_openZIM
Kiwix is one of the users of openZIM, a ZIM reader: http://openzim.org/ZIM_Readers
Emmanuel from Kiwix is currently also the biggest ZIM file creator: http://tmp.kiwix.org/zim/0.9/
/Manuel
Thanks for the info.
David.
