Hi all,
my name is Elitre and I am about to write a case study about the participation of Africa in WLM for the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiAfrica project. it would be great if Wikipedians and Wikimedians involved in WLM Kenya 2012 could send me ideas and thoughts about the contest Wiki Loves Monuments Kenya (and maybe also some background on similar events in your region) and the images in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_Wiki_Loves_Monuments..., how it went, whether you're satisfied, excited and so on. I'd be glad to report your words into my article which is due for the end of this month! Thanks!

Hello!
Sorry for this late reply.
I was part of the WLM 2012 in Kenya though there was no upload via my user-name! I also previously participated in a photowalk in Nairobi which in a way or the other mirrors the WLM!
From my personal experience, the partaking was a good one since I
discovered of monuments and other heritage sites that I never thought existed. After the WLM I now know more about most of the monuments in the city than before.I can now give an almost perfect site seeing experience to a friend around the city.
What I would take as challenges; some monuments were not in the govt database and they were discovered as WLM was going on.From what I was told while I was hunting for the monuments list, the govt is still in the process of recording all the monuments in its database. For this case they might just refer to Wikipedia since the documentation is already done there :) The lack of cameras also hindered some participants from undertaking WLM. Probably next time we should look for camera hiring firms and organize some sort of sponsorship deals with them.
As for the awareness, the site notice worked magic! We had more new users create accounts and they used those new accounts to upload photos. [1] This is a great improvement when compared to a previous photowalk which had fewer participants and it had no new faces! The site notice is a great tool to use when running such campaigns in the future.
All in all it is a venture I would try out in the near future even in other regions across the country.
PS: There is a new monument that shall be inaugurated by HE the president this week near Thika.Any takers?
Thanks, Stephen.
