Hi guys,
The meeting over at MoE went well, in fact, I met with the ICT integration team from the Ministry. They were rushing for another meeting so we didn't talk much but they are really interested in this. They have the information we require and suggested we have another meeting for further discussions.
We are to come up with the following before our next meet-up:
* A list of what we need from them to make this possible * Funding sources for the project * Implementation plan * Project scope (is it nation wide, within Nairobi etc)From here, they'll be able to provide us with intro letters for schools we choose to visit. They didn't mention this but I think they can assist in implementation.
So give me your thoughts and I'll come up with a doc to present to them next time we meet.
ps: one or two guys can accompany me next time, any volunteers?

That's incredible. Since WM-KE isn't yet registered and we don't have any letterhead, I could also request a letter from Wikimedia Foundation, elaborating what we're going to do. Is there a possibility that the Ministry could fund us? When is the next meeting? If I'm available, I'll come. Thanks;-)

Hi Abbas,
The letter head would be great. And yes, from what I saw, I believe they can consider funding us but we have to come up with a great proposal for the project. If we are to take this countrywide especially to schools in rural areas, the major hurdle I see is transportation and hopefully we can get the Ministry to fund this, hopefully. Do we have any other sources for funding?
The main guy I spoke to from the integration team (Mbugua) suggested that we should move fast with this idea so that momentum isn't lost (both on our side and from MoE) so I guess what's remaining is for guys to air their suggestions and comments regarding this for us to setup the next meeting.

Had we been registered, we could have considered local NGO's to give us grants, such as Ford Foundation and Coca Cola Foundation. An NGO that could support us at this stage might be Omidyar Network, but I haven't established any connections yet:-(
So our only available source of grants is Wikimedia Foundation. We may also consider inter-chapter support, for instance, Wikimedia UK is willing to support us too.

That is great! And about the scope of the project, it is not hard to go countrywide since we come from diverse parts of the country, so we can identify schools at the areas where we come from, then eventually expend to cover the entire nation. Let's keep going guys.

Let me know how the foundation can be helpful on this. One option to consider is partnering with a friendly NGO in Kenya on this initiative. They could provide some administrative support and might be able to receive grants on your behalf.

I was to get a list of public schools with computer labs from the ict board. I spoke to them and I was directed to the Ministry of Education. I will be meeting with an official of the ministry tomorrow to discuss this further.
The official I'm going to meet also hinted that we require permission from thd ministry to instal the offline wiki in public schools. So I'll update you tomorrow on what we'll have discussed.
