Hi folks,
I've sent you guys a Google Doc for the proposed project. It is a skeleton (yes, it really is!). Therefore, please beef it up. Feel free to comment, delete, edit or redact it so that we can come up with a concrete proposal.
Looking forward to getting your feedback.
Thank you.
m|Abbas.
Hi Abbas,
Is it possible for you to put up this content on a wiki? I suppose, that would be a better model for collaboration. :)

Hi everyone I have been following the development you guys have made so far and superb is just one of the words i can use to laud your work I. have also looked at the list of the proposed schools. Being quite familiar with the Rift,i have noted that there are some schools with well connected comp labs that have not been included. wouldn't it be wise to add them?

for sure: feel free to tell us more schools. We don't want to leave anyone behind -- that's why I insisted on us getting the list of private schools, as well.
Thank you for your input, Sarah. Feel free to voice out any other suggestions that you may have.

Depends what the official name of the chapter is. I guess it's rather "Wikimedia Kenya" than "Wikimedia KE".
Wikimedia in Switzerland has choosen "CH" not because it is the country code but "Confoerderatio Helvetica" is the official name of the country and is neutral concerning the four official languages. "Wikimedia Switzerland" wouldn't be appropriate because English is not an official language in Switzerland and all the other possibilities "Schweiz", "Suisse", "Svizzera" or "Svizra" would only represent a part of the swiss community. So "CH" for "Confoerderatio Helvetica" was an elegant way out. That's why we are so picky in correcting people when they say "Wikimedia Switzerland".

Guys,
I have worked on the logo, based on the provided guidelines. I use Adobe Fireworks for graphics so I have the original file in PNG, its exportable to other formats as well, including illustrator, photoshop, JPEG, GIF etc.
I can provide specific sizes for different purposes.

Guys,
I have worked on the logo, based on the provided guidelines. I use Adobe Fireworks for graphics so I have the original file in PNG, its exportable to other formats as well, including illustrator, photoshop, JPEG, GIF etc.
I can provide specific sizes for different purposes.

We dont have a website yet. What we do have are meta subpages:

As we speak, Manuel and Asaf are working on creating a wiki for us.
Back upthread, Anirudh suggested that the domain www.wikimedia.or.ke is vacant and it costs $59

David,
well done!
Could you please export it as a PNG, then I will integrate it into the wiki.
For logotypes PNG is a much better format (it is lossless), one should use the lossy JPEG format only for photographs (where PNG has bad compression rates).

ah, sorry:
135px x 135px with transparent background.
As a reference see: http://wikimedia.ch/images/wiki.png
Maybe we should also upload big PNG versions with both white and transparent backgrounds into the wiki, for later use.
Thanks a lot,

Questions to everybody on this list:
a) should we switch the wiki to use the Vector as used on the Wikimedia projects? I just did a test on another wiki and it is working great(though the wiki gets slower).
b) Concerning the domain name wikimedia.or.ke: Who is taking the responsibility of finding an registrar (see http://www.kenic.or.ke/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&...) to order the domain? Normally my dayjob includes working as a registrar and the regulations to become a registrar are especially easy in Kenya, but there is the requirement to be located in Kenya, so I can't do that for you. I am pretty sure that Wikimedia CH would be willing to sponsor the domain fee (but I haven't asked yet).

Guys,
I can take up the registration for the domain name,
Please let's agree on the following:
1. Whois records (admin, registrant and billing contacts) 2. Nameservers 3. Duration of registration 4. Any other issues relating to that.
David.

I'm sorry, I didn't see Manuel's questions.
Regarding the questions that you had (about nameservers, etc); I would not be in a good position to answer that. This is because I have no clue of what you're talking about (I'm not an IT geek:-)). So perhaps, I'd appreciate it if you'd break the registration process down such that it's easy for the layman to understand. Alternatively, you could wait for Sam and Alexander (or any other person) to read this email and respond to you - methinks that they are the IT guys that we have here.

Abbas,
Am also an IT professional, so add 1. Anyway, that's just the contacts associated with the domain name's ownership and authority.

Manuel, thanks to you and Wikimedia CH for taking care of the billing charges.

Guys,
I can take up the registration for the domain name,
Please let's agree on the following:
- Whois records (admin, registrant and billing contacts)
- Nameservers
- Duration of registration
- Any other issues relating to that.
David.

Hi David and Abbas,
in this case I think the Registrand and Billing Contact should be the same.
While you have to pick a specific person as a contact name, you still can make it an "organisational handler", which means that you can put in the name of the chapter.
E.g. Wikimedia Kenya (registered association) Mr. Abbas Mahmoud <official address of WMKE> Nairobi
Then the persons name can easily be changed while (as it is an org handler) the organisations name can only be changed by transfering the domain to another owner.
In short: By registering the domain to an organisation instead of a person you can easily exchange the persons name later, whenever there is a new president or board elected.
David, you should check when choosing the registrar that you find one who let you do that easily. Some have webinterfaces for that, others need to do it manually.
For the technical contact I would either put in the person who is taking care of the registration (David) or the hoster of the domain and operator of the nameservices (which would be me). Decide what you like better.

At the moment wikimedia.or.ke is _not_ registered by anyone.
From a chapters perspective I would prefer to hold the domain name by the chapter, but this is only my personal opinion and should discussed among WMKE.

Hi all,
I've been following this discussion with great interest and excitement. A couple of notes:
1. I've asked our tech team to secure the domain name for you. We can hold until you have a chapter set up. Let me know if you would prefer an alternative arrangement. 2. Jessie Wild (WMF's Strategic Projects Manager for Global Development) who is working on offline projects is available to engage with you on ways WMF could support the Wikipedia for Schools project. She is following along on the mailing list too. Let us know what we can do to help out - including possible funding.

I just looked that up on Wikipedia:
It says that "Kenya" is the same name used in both Swahili and English... if that is correct (and no other language is left out in this thinking) it would make sense to use "Wikimedia Kenya".
