Hello Nice People,
I would first like to congratulate me then you who in one way or the other
had a contribution to the making of the newest Wikimedia Chapter.
I have created the pad below to start populating it with stuff about our
chapter events and projects since the previous chapter's conference.
http://etherpad.wikimedia.org/berlin-conference
Please feel free to populate it and hope to discuss more about the state of
our chapter.
PS: Abbas, I would like to have the contacts on the forms that I remitted
to you after the Wikipedia for schools in Nyeri, If possible please bring
the forms on Saturday's meet-up.
regards,
Stephen.

Hi all,
This weekend's meetup will feature the elections of WMKE's board (at last!). So, there's a draft of the election details here: http://wikimedia.or.ke/Board_Elections. Kindly have a look at it and redact wherever necessary. The actual text is below.
Sincerely,
Abbas.
===Preamble===Wikimedia Kenya is seeking to appoint five candidates to sit on the Board of Trustees for one year, starting 1 March 2012. The five new members of the Board will help decide the future direction of Wikimedia Kenya. Board membership is unpaid.
===Nominations===Wikimedia Kenya wishes to appoint five excellent board members and believe this can best be achieved by selecting from a large number of varied and skilled candidates. Therefore, we call for nominations by everyone who believes they or someone they know would be suitable. The chapters ask that this call for candidates be distributed as widely as possible through such forums as mailing lists, blogs and social media.
The successful candidates will be committed to the Wikimedia mission and willing and able to engage constructively with the stakeholders of the movement, including the chapter volunteers and Wikip|media contributors that provide it with essential support. The successful candidates will have:
*The ability to provide expertise to the board in its goal of implementing a coherent vision on how Wikimedia projects work;
* Sensitivity to complex issues surrounding the multiplicity of languages, cultures, and jurisdictions;
* Knowledge and understanding of the governance of international non-profit organizations, balancing autonomy and subsidiarity;
* The ability to think strategically and to work both as part of a team and independently;
* A good standard of written and oral English and Swahili (fluency in additional language would be well regarded);
* Sufficient time to devote to the role of board member, and the ability and willingness to travel.
Increasing the geographical diversity of current board membership would be an advantage.
===Rules===This section is a copy and paste from the bylaws'
* Members of the Board shall be elected using the approval voting system, that is, the candidate who receives the greatest number of positive votes are elected.
* The board member shall be elected individually and the board will distribute the functions (of chairperson, treasurer, secretary, etc.) amongst themselves
* All voting for election shall be by secret ballot. In case of a tie, a re-election shall be made.
* Ballot papers shall also be made available to members entitled to vote who attend the AGM in person.
* A member is not entitled to vote at a general meeting unless all dues that are payable by the member to the Chapter have been paid.
* On a poll, votes may be given either personally or by proxy.
* A member can only give his proxy to another member and no voting member may hold more than one additional proxy. [Details about proxy voting are in the bylaws]
===Process===1. The chapter will appoint a moderator and deputy moderator to manage the election. This is intended to be very simple: The moderators are responsible for keeping the wider Wikimedia community updated with the election progress; publicizing the call for nominations; and overseeing the actual elections. The moderators should not be candidates, but they can participate in the process.
2. All candidate statements should be sent to the moderators and/or Wikimedia Kenya wiki.
3. Chapter members will have the opportunity to ask questions to candidates. Candidates are encouraged, but not obliged, to answer all questions put to them. The Q&A will take place by any appropriate means devised by the moderators (e.g. by email, F2F, etc).
4. Voting will take place on [[insert date]].
Dear All,
I trust we are all doing great and are all aware of the scheduled
Mombasa Outreach this Friday. You can take a look at the Meta page
here: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012 to
know what we have in store .
I have created a small budget for the same here too:
http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Kenya_Outreach_2012 and
would love your input into it.
So far no one has come out ON-LIST to volunteer to help with the
Outreach (except for 2 off-list requests of Morine and Ednah) So if
you still think you could volunteer for the same, Kindly get in touch.
==KU Outreach Updates==
So I have been in touch with the KU Administration over the small
outreach talk we owe them from last year and I managed to squeeze an
appointment tomorrow 29th 2012 for the same. Looks like all is set and
If you are interested in joining me for the meetup, please get in
touch too.
We would be having pretty the same talk to KU Students sometimes maybe
next week or so similar to what we are going to deliver to Mombasa.
In that regard, I would like to have somone Step in for m for th KU
and possibly subsequent Outreaches as I am soon starting my Full time
job and am not sure I will be better placed to coordinate all this
Years Outreaches as planned.
Steve is taking charge for the Egerton Outreach slated for 10th of March?
Regards,

thanks for the reply. No, I don't think we should delay the elections. I just wanted to clarify the details re the Chapters Agreement.
Thanks,

Hi Abbas,
Thanks for clarification. I had
misunderstood the deadline for the signing of the Chapter’s Agreement.
Would you rather that WMKE not rush the board election but take more time? If
nobody steps forward to moderate the election and if no candidates for the five
positions actually apply (or get nominated?) we won’t be able to hold it
on March 17 anyway … Sorry if I stepped on anyone’s toes. I just
thought it better to communicate to the entire mailing list what our little
group of six had discussed on Saturday.
Best wishes,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,
I'm not sure which documents you are referring to that need to be signed and
returned to the WMF. However, I presume that it's the Chapters Agreement. If
that's the case, then:
1) We (or to be precise, I) have not yet received any documentation from the
Foundation that requires our signing.
2) According to the Board Resolution, we have a time period of one year to sign
that Agreement.

Saturday Photo Walk
Hi WMKE friends and fellows,
We (= Steve, Oscar, Alex, Chris, Morine
and yours truly) had a great photo walk today, starting from the New Tom Mboya Monument
on Moi Avenue and then crossing Haile Selassie to the Nairobi Railway Museum
(see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nairobi_Railway_Museum - and
notice that the article doesn’t have a picture yet, which should change
soon!). From there, we went back to Koinange St and ended our walk at the
Savannah Coffee Lounge on Loita St where Wikimedia Kenya had its first face-to-face
meeting in July 2010 – so, many historical memories! J
I’m looking forward to seeing a
number of photos uploaded onto Commons (Steve, are you going to go through
those 400+ pictures, select the best of each building and post them in the
Category:Nairobi?).
At Savannah, there was also some talk of
stream-lining the information of this mailing list with the two WMKE websites
on Meta and @co.ke – currently, some info isn’t available *anywhere* - bother!
Finally, we also discussed the upcoming
board elections and suggested that these take place on March 17th
(anything else would be too late – we need to send some documents to WMF
with signatures of board members, so there! – and the next two weekends
are already booked with outreaches to Mombasa
and Egerton). So, within the next 8 days, candidates to the 5 board positions
(Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and Project / Logistics Officer) need
to write up their profiles. These should be sent to whoever will be in charge
of the elections … another question which has to be solved soonest!
So, let’s get cracking so that we
don’t lose our newly won chapterhood!
Yours for making the sum of all human
knowledge available to every single fellow inhabitant of our planet,
Oliver (aka BT)

Hello,
So far only six people have filled in their names at the etherpad.
We hope to meet at the Tom Mboya monument, along Tom Mboya Street adjacent to Kenya
National Archives at 10:00am where we shall decide which route to take as per
the goals here.
Basic requirements:
Camera (not compulsory!)
Walk/Vehicle to move around/ public transport/
autos are also okay.
Data cable/ card reader for transfer of photos.
Disable on-image timestamps or other data that
appears over-top of images.
Please empty the memory card.
Other activities:
Encourage new people from outside the community
to join.
This is a team event.
Do's:
Bring plenty of water.
Do not worry about the angles/ nitty gritties of
the photo or your camera skills!
Try and take a clear shot of the building.
Note down the list of places, names of buildings
that you photograph.
If you learn something new about a landmark/
statue/ building, do pass on the info. It would be very useful to update
in the wiki pages.
If you want to leave early, make sure you transfer
your pictures to team volunteer.
Do not:
Do not take pictures of people - To maintain a
level of decency and also not to breach privacy
Remember that all photos will be used for
Wikipedia, hence do not include personal photos.
Personal photos will not be considered for
selection.
Do not waste time, respect the time limit.
Do not go into people's homes to photograph. All
photos to be buildings/ statues/ landmarks of Nairobi.
Do not take photos where it is prohibited to do
so.
Just in case something is not clear, please feel free to ask.
regards,
Stephen.

Dear Wikipedian,
As you know, with nearly one-billion people, Africa represents the
world's third-largest market after China (1.3-billion) and India
(1.1-billion), and is widely recognized as the last frontier for
global economic growth. It is also where humanity began. And yet it
has the lowest and least informed profile of any region on the
Internet. What does appear is often not complete, selective, lacks
context and reinforces outdated stereotypes.
Africa deserves a new deal â and especially in Wikipedia.
The Africa Centre in collaboration with Lettera27 would like you to
participate in a ground-breaking project that is designed to
Africanise Wikipedia by generating and expanding 30,000 articles over
two years. The project promotes a new method of acquiring and sharing
knowledge that is fully-inclusive, mainstream, intercultural and
relevant to contemporary and historic Africa. This initial phase of
the project is focused on encouraging external Africa-based, cultural
organisations, museums and archives, as well as bloggers and
journalists, to contribute their knowledge to Wikipedia.
The project will be approached and achieve its goals via the following
four activities:
⢠Create partnerships with organisations that have existing
digitised content that is readily accessible;
⢠Motivate the adaptation of a copyleft or Creative Commons approach
to intellectual property.
⢠Activate new Wikipedia users and editors in Africa; and
⢠Create training tools and assist with the mentorships required to
activate a new team of users and editors of Wikipedia. See more on
