Hi all,
As suggested by some members we could use existing clubs to promote
wikimedia kenya in universities, now that we have started running a
few programmes including google maps which is beneficial to wikimedia,
we could also use chapter members as volunteers to assist in
installing offline version of wiki in high schools and also it will
help market kenyan universities as students write wikipedia articles
about their campuses and lecturers. My Question is who supports the
Idea of using this org
https://sites.google.com/site/kwetumapmakercompetition/project-definition
to promote wikimedia in kenya. Let me hear your comments because we
are rolling out from next week. The website will also be up and
running in two weeks time. We could include one or two people from the
chapter as we go round to market the project and the google maps.
Look forward to your comments.

For starters, I feel the best way of engaging Wikipedia in campuses is through already existing clubs. Starting a club from scratch can be pretty cambersome. With existing clubs, we wouldn't have to worry about recruiting new members, sustainability of a whole club etc.
Just thinking out loud, what do you think guys?
ps: Oscar, most phones can access that wiki. You should see the phone I use for short wiki edits!
cheers,
Alex.

Hey Guys,
Since we are going in the direction of having Campus editing "parties",I
thought this may be of help:
http://outreach.wikimedia.org/wiki/How_to_start_a_Wikipedia_student_club
And since most of us read or emails via the phones, this is what is contained
in the link:
*How to start a Wikipedia student club*
*
Are you interested in creating a community of Wikipedia editors on your
campus?
If you believe in the free sharing of knowledge to the entire global
community, then creating a Wikipedia Club on your college campus is a great
way to grow the community of Wikipedia editors.
A student club will provide a community for students to learn how to edit
Wikipedia, teach each other how to edit, and actively participate in the
process of peer-review.
Benefits:
- Opportunities to contribute to the world’s knowledge
- Gain knowledge as you access existing Wikipedia articles and create new
ones
- Improve communication, writing, researching, and teaching skills
- Experience the satisfaction of seeing your work in print

Regarding the venue, Jessica Colaco suggested we also try Nailab (same building as iHub)
I've already inquired regarding this and I'll let you know as soon as I receive feedback.

Then I think the whole idea of privacy doesn't make sense if this is the case.
Personally I'd prefer if the whole thing was made open including the names but if guys aren't comfortable with this, the name field should be removed.

Yah, awesome idea Oscar.
In my opinion, the best way to approach this would be through campus clubs, that way we won't have to worry about creating awareness and dealing with campus administration. This should be workable.

Hi,
Wikimedia Foundation usually conducts chat sessions known as Office Hours where a staff member is asked questions by the Wikimedia community.
This week, Sue Gardner (WMF Executive Director) will be on IRC chat on channel #wikimedia-office on Thursday 28 April at 1700hrs UTC (8.00pm East African Time).
Normally, there is no set agenda, but this week, discussions will centre around editor retention and Wikimania submissions.(http://wikimania2011.wikimedia.org/wiki/Call_for_Papers) Other topics are also welcome.
Office Hours are usually carried out via IRC. For more info about how to log on, see http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours
I believe that since we're in thew midst of WikiSaturday discussions, it's vital to engage in this week's Office Hours and discuss matters pertaining editor retention. Moreover, the guys going to Wikimania would have a feel of what to expect by attending this session.
For those of you who haven't heard of Wikipedia Editor Trends Study, see http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Editor_Trend_Study
Sincerely,
Abbas
Hi guys,
So just to update you on venue. Here's the thing with ihub, it's available before Saturday but I'm not sure if everyone will be able to make it. The other option's to have it next Saturday which is on 7th.
As for this Saturday, I'm looking into having the venue at NIT - that's in Westlands. I'll get back to you as soon as possible on this.
I hope connectivity speeds won't be too slow ie from Safcom / orange...
Alex.
