Hi everyone,
I'm pleased to welcome a new member of to the mobile engineering team.
Lindsey Smith started this week as our new Mobile UI/UX contractor.
She'll working with us in San Francisco helping us flush out the look,
feel, and experience across all of our mobile projects. This fits a
critical need of the mobile team which has grown steadily over the
last couple of months in development capacity but has not grown enough
in design capacity. With the addition of Lindsey we'll have some keen
eyes on such key projects as our new navigational system, image
uploads, and numerous future projects.
Lindsey joins us as a mobile designer from Dallas, Texas who's
recently moved to the bay area with her husband and 2 border collies.
She's worked for Semaphore Mobile on a range of client applications
from restaurant review service Zagat to custom remote control
interfaces for Traxxas cars[1]. Her educational background is in
Software Engineering but she found her passion to be in UI/UX.
Welcome Lindsey!

Querida comunidade Wikimedia:
programas no Brasil.
Wikimedia Brasil (Tom e Castelo).
5 pessoas, e a Oona planejará a equipe necessária. A exemplo do nosso
Atenciosamente,
Barry 17:23, 1 March 2012 (UTC)
==English Version==
Dear Wikimedia Community:
First of all, thank you all so much for your support with the recruiting
efforts for the Brazil National Program Director. It was a unique
experience for us all, and it was an exciting effort that produced
wonderful results (not to mention lots of learning for future,
collaborative hiring efforts). I recapped the process in a Wikimedia blog
post [1], which summarized the results of the first half and announced the
process for the second.
For those of you who participated in the assignment[2]: thank you! Given
the timeframe, there was a lot of participation and the candidates jumped
right into being engaged with the wiki and with the community, which was
the primary “test’ of the assignment. I’d like to also thank the four
candidates who participated in this unique process. Following the online
assignment, Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) and the two selected community
representatives took the comments on the assignment along with what was
learned in the four sets of interviews to select the director.
We have now completed the search, and I am thrilled to announce (what is
becoming less of a secret by the day) that we have engaged with Oona Castro
as the consultant for Brazil Programs. Oona is currently the executive
director of Instituto Overmundo, named after the collaborative community
nonprofit site focused on Brazilian culture. She is a member of the free
culture and the communications rights movements, and she has dedicated
significant time since her high school days to social justice issues. She
has a strong background in nonprofit leadership and in communications. She
was also a founder of Intervozes, a Brazilian movement for communications
rights. We all felt that she would be an excellent fit with our community
and that she will bring valuable ideas and relationships to our shared work
in Brazil. She was the unanimous choice of WMF and the two community
selected [3] Wikimedia Brazil representatives (Tom and Castelo).
Our current plan is to open a small representative office of the Wikimedia
Foundation in São Paulo. We are still working on the formation process
with our lawyers and accountants but hope to have the office in place
within six months. We expect to build a small team of 3-5 people, and Oona
will be working on a plan to determine the required roles. As with our work
to date, we expect Oona to continue our close partnership with the group
working to form the Wikimedia Brasil official chapter and to collaborate
with the whole community. We have developed an FAQ [4] and we encourage
you to add questions or comments on the talk page.
Oona will start her consultancy with the Wikimedia Foundation today (1
March). She will travel with our community team as they get to know editors
across the country.[5] She will also start work with the community to
develop program priorities building from the work of the Brazil Catalyst
Project [6] led by Carolina Rossini, and recent work that Jessie and Tom
have been engaged in.
Once again, I would like to thank everyone who was involved in this process
including applicants, finalists, community members who engaged on the wiki,
people who referred candidates to us (these referrals were vital!) and
especially Tom and Castelo. This is only one step in our process, but I am
excited to see us moving forward and increasing our strength as a movement
in Brazil.
Please wish Oona a warm welcome!
Best,
Barry

*Telenor makes Wikipedia available to 135 million customers in Asia and
Europe*
San Francisco, California and Oslo, Norway -- February 28, 2012 --Telenor
Group and the Wikimedia Foundation today announced a new partnership to
offer Wikipedia free of traffic charges on mobile devices to Telenor
customers in Asia and Southeastern Europe. By making versions of Wikipedia
available to 135 million mobile customers, Telenor Group and the Wikimedia
Foundation demonstrate a shared commitment to increasing access to the free
and open knowledge available on Wikipedia.
This initiative is part of the Wikimedia Foundation's mobile strategy,
which focuses on reaching the billions of people around the world whose
primary opportunity to access the Internet is via a mobile device.
“The Wikimedia Foundation is working to remove barriers to free knowledge,
and for most people around the world right now, cost and accessibility are
the two biggest hurdles,” says Barry Newstead, Wikimedia Chief Global
Development Officer. “We applaud Telenor for joining us to deliver free
access to Wikipedia for their customers. Through this partnership, we move
a step closer to providing the sum of all knowledge to everyone in the
world.”
This partnership supports Telenor's commitment to bring more value to its
mobile customers. The company has pioneered the development of value-adding
services to rural and underserved communities in Asia. Telenor involve
millions in Asia through the I-Genius project, which has already reached
out to 300,000 Bangladeshi students and school-children with a call to
explore open knowledge on the internet.
“We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Wikimedia
Foundation. Telenor have pioneered affordable, mobile communications across
much of Asia, and we have built a track record of offering vital services
with a significant outreach” says Kristin Skogen Lund, Executive Vice
President and Head of Digital Services at Telenor Group. “With this
agreement, we are first in Asia to bring a vast knowledge source to the
millions in underserved communities across the region.”
The 3-year partnership between Telenor Group and the Wikimedia Foundation
will cover 135 million users. The agreement is signed by seven countries:
Thailand, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Montenegro, and Serbia. By
the end of the year, more markets are expected to join. The agreement will
be implemented step by step throughout 2012, with the first markets
launching during the second quarter.
Each local Telenor affiliate will establish technical solutions together
with the Wikimedia Foundation. Customers with a Telenor SIM will be able to
access a version of the encyclopedia for as many times as they like in a
given period, at no charge, as long as they stay within Wikipedia’s pages.
