Hi all,
the new bulletin from Wikimedia Italia (#39) is available.
This time we write about the (re-)starting of Authors in Wikipedia and
The adventure of growing up; the (new) start of ArcheoWiki; and our
participation to the Genoa Science Festival.

=== Authors in Wikipedia ===
The award ceremony for the the "Authors in Wikipedia" contest will be
held in Milan on November 26 at the headquarters of AICA (Piazzale
Rodolfo Morandi, 2). Purpose of the project is to enable secondary
school students to learn the use of Wikipedia for sharing knowledge.
Each student, followed by a teacher, creates an article; these
articles enter the competition (it is also possible that a group of
students creates an article for the contest). In this way, Wikipedia
is enriched with new content created by the pupils, forming at the
same time new Wikipedians and improving the awareness of young people
for the use of new technologies.
=== ArcheoWiki ===
ArcheoWiki is starting! The new project is particularly addressed to
less favoured audiences (such as the elderly and the disabled), and
wants to raise awareness for the less known archaeological heritage in
Lombardy, making it available through the technological infrastructure
and the collaborative approach of Wikipedia. The activities will be
focused on different targets: "Wikigita" (an excursion) for the
general public, "Wikigita goes to school" for students of secondary
schools and "Wikigita comes to you" for the elderly and disabled. The
organizations benefiting from the project will be: non-European Civic
Collections of the Castello Sforzesco (Milan); Fondazione Passarè
(Milan); Ethnographic Collection of the Castiglioni Frothers (Varese);
Civic Museum of Asola (Mantova); Civic Archaeological Museum of
Desenzano (Brescia); Civic Archaeological Museum of Varese.
=== The adventure of growing up ===
"The adventure of growing up" starts again! The aim of the project is
to make known memories and historical documents from the Istituto
degli Innocenti in Florence, involving students, families, groups of
young people, associations of migrant people. It offers workshops
where history is combined with education, to reflect on the past and
to write with the language of the present. The cultural heritage made
thus accessible gives children new ideas for participation and
citizenship. Wikimedia Italy contributes to the project with learning
activities on the theme of knowledge sharing and collaborative
writing, directly targeted at boys, which complement and enrich the
training. More insights may be found on the site of the project,

=== Wikimedia at Festival della Scienza ===
One of the events of the Genoa Science Festival 2012 has been a
meeting "[http://www.festivalscienza.it/site/home/programma/giorno-per-giorno/1-novem…
Wikipedia and the imaginary science]", where a delegation of Wikimedia
Italia talked about how Wikipedia, being an encyclopedia, also
collects information about the theories rejected by the majority of
the scientific community: this does not mean that these theories are
considered at the same level as the standard ones, of course! In the
meeting, we also told about people ("plotters") seeking at all costs
to promote their vision on famous events, like the 9/11 attacks and
the (non-)landing on the moon, and how the Wikipedia community
approaches these discussions.
=== News from Wiki World ===

The inaugural Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) is pleased to announce
recommendations [1] on Round 1 of funds allocations for the year 2012-13.
The WMF Board of Trustees will make a decision on these recommendations by
December 15, 2012.
The FDC received proposals from 12 movement entities for Round 1 for a
total requested amount of 10.4 million USD. These proposals were from 11
Wikimedia chapters and the Wikimedia Foundation. Three proposals were
received after the deadline of 1 October had passed, but the FDC decided
that since it was the first time for the process, the late proposals would
be accepted and discussed. Since the proposal deadline, the FDC and FDC
support staff have spent many hours reviewing and assessing these proposals
to determine a set of allocations that would best support movement goals.
This assessment included a 4-day in-person deliberation session in San
Francisco over the period October 28-31, where the FDC members discussed
the proposals in depth and determined allocation amounts for each applying
entity.
The FDC recognizes that this is not a perfect process, and that the process
and the outcome will improve over time as we learn more about what works in
the movement and what drives impact. We invite the community to provide
overall feedback on these recommendations on the talk page for these
recommendations [2] and to provide feedback about the FDC process on-wiki
to the Ombudsperson [3], who will collect this feedback and use it in our
continuous improvement process. For formal complaints about the
recommendations, there is a separate process, outlined below.
If any entity has a complaint about the FDC’s recommendation, it should be
submitted by 23:59 UTC on 22 November 2012 in accordance with the complaint
process outlined in the Framework for the Creation and Initial Operation of
the FDC [4]:
- The complaint should be in the form of a 500-or-fewer word summary
directed to the two non-voting WMF Board representatives on the FDC
(Jan-Bart and Patricio)
- The complaint should be submitted on-wiki, through the FDC portal page
designated for this purpose [5]
- These board representatives will present the complaint to the WMF
Board at the same time it considers the FDC recommendation.
- Formal complaints can be submitted only by the Board Chair of a
funding-seeking entity.
- Formal complaints must be filed within seven days of the submission of
the FDC slate of recommendations to the WMF Board (by end of day UTC
November 22)
- Any planned or approved disbursements to the organization filing a
complaint will be put on hold until the complaint is resolved.
- If the WMF Board's consideration of the complaint results in an
amendment of the FDC's recommendations (which is expected only in
extraordinary circumstances), the WMF Board may choose to release extra
funds from the WMF reserves to provide additional funds not allocated by
the FDC's initial recommendation.
- Other members of the WMF Board may participate in the investigation if
approved by the Chair of the WMF Board.

Hi all,
the new bulletin from Wikimedia Italia (#38) is available.
This time we write about the results of our Assembly, the prizegiving for
Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, our partecipation to World Business Forum next
week, and our internal fundraising campaign.
As usual a link has been added to meta, under
Wikimedia_chapters/Reports/Wikimedia_Italia ; raw text of the bulletin
follows below.
ciao, .mau.
=== Assembly ===
On October 20 we had our official assembly in Pisa. We talked about the
Wikimedia Conference, to be held in Milan next April: It will feature two
representatives from each national chapter, in order to discuss the
different realities experienced by the National Chapters, and future plans.
We also decided to organize a new edition of Wiki Loves Monuments in 2013.
=== Wiki Loves Monuments ===
On 31 October, at the Galleria Alberto Sordi in Rome, we awarded the [

which entered Wiki Loves Monuments. Ten other photos received special
mentions. Congratulations to all the winners, especially to Nicola D'Orta,
who was awarded the first prize for the photo of the [

of Capua]; to Bernard Marchetti, who won the second prize with
the photo of the [

Alberto Sordi in Rome], and to Andrea Parisi, who qualified third
portraying the [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Teatro_Comunale.jpgMunicipal
Theatre of Ferrara].
The 2012 edition of Wiki Loves Monuments collected nearly twice as many
photographs as the 2011 edition, which just entered the Guinness Book of
Records as the largest photo competition ever.
The organizers of Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 never stop: while waiting for
2013 edition, twenty photographs are carried around Italy and exposed to
cultural institutions, museums and libraries.
=== Wikimedia Italy at World Business Forum ===
Wikimedia Italy was invited to follow the World Business Forum (
http://www.wobi.com/it/event/world-business-forum-milano-2012 ), to be held
in Milan on 6 and 7 November. It is a prestigious management training
event, dedicated to the understanding of the dynamics and challenges of our
time and the global economy.
=== Support us with a donation ===
The donations we receive as Wikimedia Italy will be used to spread free
knowledge. Our flagship projects for 2013 will be ArcheoWiki, through which
we'll free the archaeological heritage in Lombardia making it available to
everyone, and Wiki Loves Monuments, a the Guinness Book of Records photo
contest; but we will support many other projects.
Our work is made possible by a community of volunteers, members and donors,
whose support becomes our strength and autonomy.
We want to continue to work so that everyone can take advantage of the
entire wealth of the human knowledge. Connect to the web site
sostienilacultura.it, make your donation, and help freeing the culture.
