Dear Wikimedians of Chicago User Group members,
My name is Samir Elsharbaty. I'm a community brand and marketing coordinator at the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm reaching out with an update and an invitation to join us in the movement brand project.
Last year, we started the movement brand project https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Wikimedia_brands/2030_movement_brand_project; a project to evolve the Wikimedia movement’s brand identity system. To do this we have partnered with Snøhetta https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sn%C3%B8hetta_(company), an international branding and architecture agency. Through workshops, exercises, and requests for feedback, Snøhetta is working with Wikimedia communities to create an updated naming convention and design, which will be used by the Wikimedia Foundation and will be opt-in for affiliates.
As a Wikimedia affiliate organization, Chicago Wikimedians UG is an important stakeholder in this project. I would like to invite you to become part of a process to shape our global shared brand identity. Participation is not time consuming but crucial to direct our work ahead.
Over the next five months, the brand team will be helping Snøhetta gather community feedback at key moments. Your involvement would revolve around receiving updates and providing feedback on proposals for a naming convention and brand design. If you are interested, please select one or two people from Chicago Wikimedians UG to act as a Liaison between our team and your group during this process. We will send important updates and all feedback opportunities to that person so that they can share with the group and collect your feedback.
This process will arrive at a new branding system that you will be able to adopt if you choose, so we hope that you will decide to participate.
In the meantime, here are main hubs for updates and discussion on this project:
1.
The brand network on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikipediabrandnetwork. 2.
Snohetta’s project hub, brandingwikipedia.org. 3.
The project page on meta https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Wikimedia_brands/2030_movement_brand_project .
Please reach out to us with any questions or thoughts you may have.
I’m looking forward to collaborating with you!
Best regards,
Samir

Hey Chicago Wikimedians,
It's exciting that the WMF is reaching out to community groups for input on branding. I know they've been working on a branding project for some time. Respond on this listhost or ping me if you're interested in being a liaison! I'm assuming we'll send along liaison contact info to Samir. I'll be cross-posting this email to the Facebook group as well.
All the best, Brian

Hello again!
While you work with your group to select a liason for the brand project, we wanted to let you know about an important feedback opportunity that will be going on for the next week.
Over the past months, our design partner Snohetta has hosted 8 workshops in Norway, India and online, which included 97 movement members from 41 nations. Participants of the workshops were asked to collectively answer the question “Who are we?” by designing concepts. 23 concepts came out of the workshops.
Snohetta has now published these 23 concepts for review https://brandingwikipedia.org/concepts/?fbclid=IwAR1YLWd3fiCAAoB1HtzFveokf6eSIzh-vglrAEHFAcZO4dkOSG7sB53z3CA. We’d like to know, in your opinion, which concepts best represent the Wikimedia movement. You can review the concepts by “liking” your favorites or by leaving comments.
We’d like to get as wide of a range of feedback as possible, so please share the link with anyone you feel may be interested in participating.
Please let me know if you have any questions

Hi again,
We wanted to follow up on our previous email with an update on the 2030 Movement Brand Project https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Communications/Wikimedia_brands/2030_movement_brand_project based on the new realities we all face due to the global pandemic, share an invitation to an event this month and renew our request for you regarding the project liaison.
We know there continues to be so much uncertainty, which is why we are slowing down the process of the project. Big changes are happening to all of us these days. With that, we want to make sure that we respect your time and priorities. This means we are:
-
Adjusting the timeline approach to have more flexibility for participants and smaller time commitments. -
Revising the project schedule month-by-month in order to reflect participants’ needs and the global situation. -
Increased messaging (more emails with updates!) announcing what is happening and when.
Affiliate Liaisons?
We are requesting all Wikimedia affiliates to designate a liaison for the Movement Brand project. This liaison will be the contact point between their affiliation and the project team. We will send the project updates and requests for feedback to this person who will, in turn collect the group’s feedback and send it back to us. If you are interested in participating in the project, please let us know who the user group liaison will be by April 18.
Get on the list!
Once you and your affiliate agree on the liaison, please add their name to the Affiliate liaisons section of the Participants list on the Brand Network Meta page https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Brand_Network. This page, along with the Brand Network group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/wikipediabrandnetwork/, is a discussion venue for the Brand Network where updates, open questions, case studies, and more will be shared. Watchlist the page to follow discussion.
Feeling a bit overwhelmed?
Please see attached an overall summary of the Brand Project with links to where you can learn more. It gives an overview of the project, shows where we are at in the process, and outlines roles and responsibilities for the affiliate liaisons.
This month: LIVE Unified Concept Presentation
To honor, celebrate, and conclude the work around the concepts https://brandingwikipedia.org/concepts/ referred to in our previous email above, Snohetta and the Brand Project team will present the Unified Concept LIVE on 16 April, 15:00 - 16:00 GMT. Snøhetta will explain how they used the ideas, feedback and conceptual models from the workshops and online exercises to arrive at a final, unified concept. This unified concept will be the foundation for the upcoming work around the naming conventions, visual decisions, and the overall design system. The session will also be recorded and made available for viewing after. You can join us on Zoom https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/769565325 or watch live on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xS72O6Si94Q. Note: this is not a presentation of a proposal for a naming convention or design.
May & beyond
We had planned to explore the movement naming conventions in April. We are pushing this out to a later date.
Now discussion around naming will happen in May at the earliest, with great care given to how the global pandemic continues to impact our world and our communities. We will send an update on this at the end of April.
Although the project timeline will continue to be adjusted based on the global situation, please know all feedback opportunities will be scheduled for two-week-long periods, and you will also get a two-week advance notice before any opportunities happen. This will allow for a full month of planning and engagement at each phase, which will hopefully make participation possible for whoever would like to join.
We will get back to you with an update by the end of April with the project schedule for May. In the meanwhile, let us know if you have any questions. Thank you for your dedication to our movement and to setting knowledge free.
Best,
Samir and the Brand Project team.
