Hi all,
It's not too late to submit scholarship applications or program submissions
for WikiConference North America 2019 (Nov 8-11 in Cambridge)! The
submission deadlines for both have been extended through Sunday, Sept 22
(academic submissions are still being accepted through Sept 27).
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2019/Scholarshipshttps://wikiconference.org/wiki/2019/Submissions
Registration has also opened! An early-bird ticket is also available
through October 13, which will save you $15:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wikiconference-north-america-tickets-681896079…
Finally, we have a travel and accommodations page up. It's a work in
progress, but we do have some lodging discounts available:
https://wikiconference.org/wiki/2019/Travel
Let us know if you have any questions, and feel free to reach out to us at
info(a)wikiconference.org.
Thank you!

Hi all,
I had a great time on Thursday evening - thank you all so much for the
enjoyable welcome to Chicago.
The talk to the American Psychological Association went well this morning.
I'm hopeful that WP:PSYCH can be re-invigorated - maybe with a formal
collaboration with the APA. Sadly the recording didn't work for this talk.
I've attached my slides anyway, and most of it is pretty understandable
without my voiceover (some animations, so best to view in powerpoint).
Maybe I'll re-record it at some point and stick it up on commons or
youtube. I'll try again to record the next Sunday talk on WikiJournals!
All the best,
Thomas

Hello Chicago Wikimedians,
Wikimedian Thomas Shafee will be visiting from Australia
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Airplaneman#Visiting_Chicago> this
August, and it's a great chance for us to plan a casual meetup. I've
created a handy dandy doodle poll <https://doodle.com/poll/qtt8wpcqmm54pdfk>
to gauge availability. Current time options are for the evenings on
Thursday, August 8 and Saturday, August 10. The location will most likely
be a restaurant in downtown Chicago. If you'd like to attend, please fill
it out. I'll be in touch around next week with more concrete plans based on
poll results.
If you know of anyone who may be interested in attending but isn't part of
this listhost, please let them know they're invited! Please be in touch on
here, our Facebook group <https://www.facebook.com/groups/1908906602738667/>,
or our meta page
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedians_of_Chicago_User_Group> if you
have any questions or communications.
Looking forward to seeing you all in August!

Hi Chicago Wikimedians,
This email is an update regarding the Wikimedia Summit, which I attended,
and our group's vote in the Affiliate Selected Board Seats (ASBS) process.
We get to help choose two seats on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of
Trustees!
Here's information on the ASBS voting procedure
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019/Voting>.
Board nominees are listed here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Affiliate-selected_Board_seats/2019/Nominat…>.
Incumbents Christophe Henner and Nataliia Tymkiv are both running again.
Richard Knipel (in this mailing list!) is also running. Our user group will
decide who to vote for. The vote involves ranking candidates from most to
least desired. After we decide, I (the "affiliate representative") will
fill out a Qualtrics survey to cast our vote. If there's interest among you
all to get together to discuss candidates, I can set up a time to
teleconference (or even meet in person). We can also discuss via this
mailing list or on our Facebook group. Let me know! The voting deadline is
May 31.
I wrote an overview of the Wikimedia Summit for the April edition of the
*Signpost* here
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Signpost/2019-04-30/Commu…>.
I didn't give personal opinions of the conference there, but I'll give some
brief impressions here. I'm also happy to talk about what happened with
anybody either via email, or through a call, individually or as a group.
This was my first strategy conference and my second Wikipedia-related
conference overall. It was a lot to take in, but I got to meet and talk
with a lot of interesting and passionate Wikimedians from all around the
world.[1]
The 2030 strategy wants, among other things, to include more people and
content in the Wikimedia movement ("diversity") and also to improve
"community health". I think these two "thematic areas" (of 9 total
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Working…>)
resonate most closely with our user group's focus, so I focused my
conference time on conversations surrounding these issues.
Wikimedia Foundation staff were also present at the Summit. I got to talk
to brand manager Zach McCune on whether "Wikimedia" should rebrand as
"Wikipedia". More on the proposal here
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/2019/02/26/leading-with-wikipedia-a-brand-p…>.
I'm personally in favor of such a rebranding.
Strategy working groups are incorporating feedback into the strategy
recommendations in time for Wikimania 2019 in August. I'll keep you updated
on strategy stuff as it happens! For now, we can focus on deciding which
board candidates to vote for.
All the best,
Brian Choo

To: <brianychoo(a)gmail.com>
Hi Brian,
Rosie Stephenson-Goodknight gave me your name as contact in our region. I
am the chair of the "1000 Women in Religion Project" which is a major
initiated of the Women's Caucus of the American Academy of Religion and the
Society of Biblical Literature. We are a group of people who are not
particularly tech savvy but passionate about improving the coverage of
women in religion on Wikipedia. Here is a link to our webpage.
http://womenscaucusaar.wixsite.com/womenscaucusaarsbl/1000-women-in-religio….
We have several edit-a-thons scheduled across the year. Our first one is
coming up quickly, in the Madison Wisconsin area, on May1, 1-4pm at Holy
Wisdom Monastery. I am new at editing myself so I could really use some
help teaching others to edit. I am hoping you can put me in touch with a
wikipedian in the area or in our region who might be willing and able to
help.
Any type of help you could provide would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Colleen Hartung (Dzingle1)
Fellow Wikimedians,
I’ll be attending this year's annual Wikimedia Summit
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Summit_2019> on behalf of our
user group. The conference is from 29–31 March in Berlin. In short, the
goal of this conference is to work out more details for the Wikimedia
Movement's 2030 strategy. I've attached an email from conference Program
Coordinator Cornelius Kibelka that has more details on the movement
strategy "scoping drafts
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2018-20/Partici…>"
if you're interested.
In simple terms, there are two main buckets of people attending:
1. 2030 strategy working group members
2. Non-working group members who are part of Wikimedia affiliates (I'm
in this bucket)
My primary purpose at this conference is to represent the perspective,
needs, and aspirations of our Chicago Wikimedia community as they relate to
the Wikimedia Movement's 2030 strategy. Along with other affiliate
representatives, I'll be conversing with and giving feedback to working
group members on strategy. There are 9 working groups, each focusing on a
different aspect of the movement. From my own perspective and conversations
with many of you, these aspects are where I think our community is most
involved:
- Fostering more diversity on Wikimedia projects
- Advocacy
- Capacity building
- Partnerships (building relationships with institutions of knowledge)
I'll therefore be focusing on these aspects of movement strategy at the
conference. Feel free to reply to this email thread or reach out to me
personally if you have any questions, comments, or anything to add! I'll be
sure to report back what I've learned after the conference.
All the best,
Brian Choo

Subject: [Wikimedia Summit 2019] Get ready to talk about the future at the
Wikimedia Summit (aka: Scoping Documents are online)
To: Wikimedia Summit Participants mailing list <
wmsummit-list(a)mailing.wikimedia.de>
Dear Wikimedians,
Start preparing for this year’s Wikimedia Summit: the nine working groups
of the Movement Strategy Process have produced scoping documents that are
now live! And the groups are looking for answers about how to shape the
future of our movement. These documents will be at center of the Wikimedia
Summit program - check them out on Meta [1] and bring your ideas and input
with you to Berlin.
We’ve set ourselves the ambitious goal of becoming the essential
infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge by 2030. How can we adapt
to ensure our movement is future ready? What are the biggest opportunities
that could drive this evolution? These scoping documents outline guiding
questions, and the Wikimedia Summit is one of the key forums where we will
start to find solutions and help create actionable recommendations for
change.
We encourage all of you to read the documents before the Summit, discuss
with other members of your group and come ready to jump straight into these
topics.
On a side-note: At the same time, from today until mid-April, there is an
online community conversation (on Meta, in several languages, and via
survey) on these questions. Both the insights gathered online in these
conversations and offline at the Wikimedia Summit will feed into the
analysis and recommendation phase of the strategy process.
If you have any questions regarding the scoping drafts, we recommend you
post these on Meta, where the working group members can answer. If you have
any questions regarding the Wikimedia Summit itself, please do not hesitate
to reach out to me.
Happy reading!
Cornelius

RSVP TODAY <jkim(a)wikimedia.org?subject=RSVP%20to%20Wikipedia%20fundraiser>
Wikipedia started in 2001 with an impossible idea: to build a free
encyclopedia for and by the world. Seventeen years later, we’ve made some
serious progress. Nearly 300 languages, more than 45 million articles,
billions of monthly readers, and millions of contributors over the years.
In spite of our tremendous growth, we are still a long way from realizing
our vision of free knowledge for all. The world and the internet have
changed substantially around us, fact-based information is being called
into question, and free, open knowledge is more important than ever.
This event is a unique opportunity to support the single-largest source of
free open knowledge ever created - *Wikipedia*. You'll be in good company
as you share laughs, drinks, and conversations with people who care deeply
about our mission to imagine a world in which all human beings can freely
share in the sum of all knowledge.
We are truly grateful for your continued support to Wikipedia and free
knowledge. I hope to see you in February!
With gratitude,
Katherine Maher

Wikipedia’s 18th birthday in such cold weather. It was great to meet so
many new people and see some returning faces as well. Our food costs were
funded by a Wikimedia Foundation Rapid Grant. You can see the grant

Events are a great way to learn how to edit Wikipedia and meet like-minded
people. Art + Feminism is hosting an event at the Glass Curtain

You can also propose event ideas that you think our user group should host
in the future. Some ideas floating around include a Chicago history-focused
edit-a-thon. I'm considering a Public Domain Day

at the University of Chicago for around May.
Finally, this mailing list is our mailing list—the mailing list anyone can
