Thanks for providing that link Pharos: this is for seating someone to
an analysis
committee
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Affilia…>
to help rate candidates in discussion with 8 other regional or thematic
representatives.
The ratings will be for informational purposes. The original timeline hoped
to have this decided by the 15th. It was later extended until the 20th. I
am hoping North American affiliates can finalize this within the next few
business days. There are currently four nominees
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2022/Affilia…>
for this committee seat.
As you mentioned, each affiliate is also asked to select one representative
to participate in the affiliate question period and cast a vote on behalf
of the affiliate organization during the affiliate voting period:

Subject: [Wikimediaus-l] REMINDER: Voting for Movement Charter Drafting
Committee open until October 24, 2021
To: Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States (WALRUS) <
wikimediaus-l(a)lists.wikimedia.org>
REMINDER
Community voting to fill 7 of the 15 seats of the Movement Charter Drafting
Committee (MCDC) is open and runs until the end of Sunday, October 24,
2021. This is a very important group that will help draft a charter for the
Wikimedia Movement that will undergo community feedback and eventual
ratification.
BASICS
Basic information about the MCDC is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee
An "election compass" was created as a Q&A system to help voters evaluate
how well the candidate's views matched their own. That official site is
here:
https://mcdc-election-compass.toolforge.org/
Voting happens with single transferable vote (SVT) using SecurePoll here
until October 24:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee/Electio…
ADDENDUM
That is the base information. However, I am including more practical
knowledge and wisdom from various sources. Why? There are 70 candidates for
7 seats. If that sounds daunting, you are correct. There has been
widespread concern that the average voter cannot meaningfully evaluate the
candidates.
Therefore, here are some of the best practices and resources so far. These
are all publicly available tools and content, but I am highlighting them
here for the benefit of the community.
-
A table of all the candidates, locales, languages, and basic
information. This was gleaned from the original candidate statements but is
more easily viewable (and sortable) in table form.
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Movement_Charter/Drafting_Committee/Candida…
-
Browse the full election compass results with this tool (full
disclosure, it was created by one of the candidates, but it faithfully
reports the compass answers in a different format). I would recommend
browsing all the questions, but these specifically show the widest range of
responses: 1, 6, 11, 24, 34, 45, 92
https://krehel.sk/Candidates_Drafting_Committee_Movement_Charter_Statements/
-
A user perspective of how to navigate the election process from longtime
Wikimedian Lodewijk Gelauff, posted on Facebook and publicly readable even
without an account.

Dear Wikimedians of Chicago,
The 2021 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election is coming soon,
this is the time when four seats of the Board of Trustees are elected. In
September the Board is expected to appoint its new members.
The Board has asked us, the Board Election Facilitation Team, to take care
that all communities in the movement are aware of the elections. With the
help of more than 70 election volunteers from all over the world, we are
reaching out to many communities already.
A major step in this is having as many candidates as possible running for
the Board, especially from underrepresented groups. That is why we are
getting to you: we ask for your support and help about that very matter.
The Call for Candidates is up now and we would kindly ask you to provide
the announcement along your channels - newsletters, blogs, wikis, mailings
and community platforms as the final week of it is starting today.
The announcement is here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_elections/2021/2021-06…
Many translations are already available, if one suits your needs, please
feel free to pick it up. In case a translation is not available, incomplete
or not sufficient, we would appreciate you fixing it. If you are doing a
new translation, please feel free to do it on meta, so the landing page is
available in your language.
Though we do not expect this to take more than an hour, we know that we are
asking a lot. Be assured, that we would not do this if it weren’t for our
wish to make all communities a part of this as much as they deserve. We
hope that you can agree on its importance and would be glad to hear from
you.
Best regards,

Dear Chicago Wikimedians,
We are inviting the *Wikimedians of Chicago User Group * to
participate in *Wikipedia
Pages Wanting Photos 2021
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2021>*, a
global contest scheduled to run from July first through August 31, 2021:
Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then
add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the
Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki
Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.
In its first year (2020), 36 Wikimedia communities in 27 countries joined
the campaign. Events relating to the campaign included training organized
by at least 18 Wikimedia communities in 14 countries.
The campaign resulted in the addition of media files (photos, audios and
videos) to more than 90,000 Wikipedia articles in 272 languages.
Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) offers an ideal task for recruiting
and guiding new editors through the steps of adding content to existing
pages. Besides individual participation, the WPWP campaign can be used by
user groups and chapters to organize editing workshops and edit-a-thons.
The organizing team is looking for a contact person to coordinate WPWP
participation at the Wikimedia user group or chapter level (geographically
or thematically) or for a language WP. We’d be glad for you to reply to
this email, or sign up directly at WPWP Participating Communities
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2021/Partici…>
.

Hey everyone!
I'm passing along a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. They'd
appreciate your input, as members of the Wikimedians of Chicago User Group,
on the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) for all Wikimedia spaces.
Disclosure: I'm part of the team working on this, but I'm sending this
email in my volunteer capacity.
Any input you might have is appreciated--I know they're looking for people
with all levels of experience. The survey does ask about our affiliate's
code of conduct; we don't have one specifically for our group, since we're
small. We defer to the Friendly space policies for events and such:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Friendly_space_policies
If you'd like to discuss the UCoC in a different format, public community
conversations are opening up starting next week on local wikis. Here's a
preview:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/2021_consultations
I'm always open to talking about the UCoC, so let me know if you have any
questions or thoughts.

Subject: Invitation to Participate in UCoC Survey - Wikimedians of Chicago
User Group
Hello;
My name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.
As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of
Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot
be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and
enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear
definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in
a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of
conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their
deficiencies, if any.
In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your
ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and
enforcement pathways using this survey:
*Survey (English): *UCoC: Affiliates Outreach Survey (google.com)

may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and
data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to

Hey Chicago Wikimedians!
I hope everyone is having a safe and healthy start to the new year. It's
been a while since we've spoken. I'd like to discuss the future of the
Wikimedians
of Chicago User Group
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedians_of_Chicago_User_Group>.
I haven't had the capacity to organize activities on behalf of the group
this year, and I don't foresee myself being available to spearhead things
in the future either. Our annual report is due, but we don't have things to
put on it for the year. No report means that *our affiliate status is set
to expire
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedians_of_Chicago_User_Group#Noti…>*.
If anyone's interested in organizing a few things for the group in 2021,
please let me know *in the next two weeks*, and I can look into putting
together a short report and reversing this expiry.
I started this group, along with Chris and Tony, to help build connections
with like-minded individuals and Wikimedians in Chicago. We don't need to
be an official affiliate to continue to do this. And though I don't have
the capacity to organize local events or participate in affiliate
discussions, I will continue to monitor this mailing list and Facebook
group. Though I haven't been a part of organized events in 2020, I've
appreciated the many one-on-one interactions I've continued to have with
Wikimedians in our group throughout 2020, and I don't anticipate those to
go away.
If the user group's status does expire, there is still Wikimedia-focused
organizing in Chicago (though it's all online nowadays) with Wikimedia
affiliates such as the Black Lunch Table. They continue to do incredible
and important work. People can also organize events individually. I'll
always be around to chat about anything and talk shop about putting events
together if someone wants to take the reins for the group in the future.
Cheers,
Brian Choo

Hello,
We want to update Wikimedia movement affiliates on the progress of the
Universal Code of Conduct, one of the recommendations of the Movement
Strategy process that many of you are familiar with. The UCoC draft of a
“binding minimum set of standards across all Wikimedia projects" was
developed by volunteers, affiliate staff, and Foundation staff in 2020. As
you may have seen announced earlier this week, the draft was approved by
the Board of Trustees on February 2, covers policies for in-person and
virtual events, technical spaces, and all Wikimedia projects and wikis.
The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous
cooperation of international communities to define clear definitions of
enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that
does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently
in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if
any.
We invite you to play an active role in bringing about this change; this is
a common goal that cannot be done by one or a few parties. The change is
global, and will affect all participants of the Wikimedia movement,
individuals and communities. We need to hear your voices, to learn from
your experiences and benefit from your ideas for solutions.
We will reach out to you over the month of March to discuss your thoughts
and concerns about the enforcement of the UCoC. Please look forward to
hearing from us soon!
