Hello
To better understand the perspectives of individuals in the Wikimedia
community who have experienced harassment, Wikimedia Foundation is doing a
survey about our community members’ knowledge of, and comfort with,
existing enforcement and reporting processes. This survey is open to anyone
on our projects regardless of their knowledge of our reporting and
enforcement systems. The aim is to provide a public report for review by
the incoming joint volunteer-staff Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC)
drafting committee working on the code’s enforcement outline.
This survey is hosted on Qualtrics using an anonymous link, and will not
collect IP addresses, location information, name or other contact
information. The survey should take around 5 - 10 minutes to complete.
You can find the survey at the URL below:
https://wikimedia.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0AFm1nekFrwSWJ8
We would be grateful if you would consider passing on this survey to
members of your community that you think would have valuable insights to
share.
If you have any questions, please contact the Wikimedia Community Health
Working Group, communityhealthwg(a)wikimedia.org. Thank you for your time and
feedback!

*The Second Wikidata Workshop*
Co-located with the 20th International Conference on Semantic Web (ISWC
2021).
Date: October 24 or 25, 2021
The workshop will be held online, afternoon European time.
Website: https://wikidataworkshop.github.io/2021/
== Important dates ==
Papers due: Friday, July 30, 2021
Notification of accepted papers: Friday, September 24, 2021
Camera-ready papers due: Monday, October 4, 2021
Workshop date: October 24/25, 2021
== Overview ==
Wikidata is an openly available knowledge base, hosted by the Wikimedia
Foundation. It can be accessed and edited by both humans and machines and
acts as a common structured-data repository for several Wikimedia projects,
including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, and Wikisource. It is used in a variety of
applications by researchers and practitioners alike.
In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of publications
around Wikidata. While there are several dedicated venues for the broader
Wikidata community to meet, none of them focuses on publishing original,
peer-reviewed research. This workshop fills this gap - we hope to provide a
forum to build this fledgling scientific community and promote novel work
and resources that support it.
The workshop seeks original contributions that address the opportunities
and challenges of creating, contributing to, and using a global,
collaborative, open-domain, multilingual knowledge graph such as Wikidata.
We encourage a range of submissions, including novel research, opinion
pieces, and descriptions of systems and resources, which are naturally
linked to Wikidata and its ecosystem, or enabled by it. What we’re less
interested in are works which use Wikidata alongside or in lieu of other
resources to carry out some computational task - unless the work feeds back
into the Wikidata ecosystem, for instance by improving or commenting on
some Wikidata aspect, or suggesting new design features, tools and
practices.
We also encourage submissions on the topic of Abstract Wikipedia,
particularly around collaborative code management, natural language
generation by a community, the abstract representation of knowledge, and
the interaction between Abstract Wikipedia and Wikidata on the one, and
Abstract Wikipedia and the language Wikipedias on the other side.
We welcome interdisciplinary work, as well as interesting applications that
shed light on the benefits of Wikidata and discuss areas of improvement.
The workshop is planned as an interactive half-day event, in which most of
the time will be dedicated to discussions and exchange rather than oral
presentations. For this reason, all accepted papers will be presented in
short talks and accompanied by a poster. All works will be presented
online.
== Topics ==
Topics of submissions include, but are not limited to:
- Data quality and vandalism detection in Wikidata
- Referencing in Wikidata
- Anomaly, bias, or novelty detection in Wikidata
- Algorithms for aligning Wikidata with other knowledge graphs
- The Semantic Web and Wikidata
- Community interaction in Wikidata
- Multilingual aspects in Wikidata
- Machine learning approaches to improve data quality in Wikidata
- Tools, bots and datasets for improving or evaluating Wikidata
- Participation, diversity and inclusivity aspects in the Wikidata ecosystem
- Human-bot interaction
- Managing knowledge evolution in Wikidata
- Abstract Wikipedia
== Submission guidelines ==
We welcome the following types of contributions.
- Full research paper: Novel research contributions (7-12 pages)
- Short research paper: Novel research contributions of smaller scope than
full papers (3-6 pages)
- Position paper: Well-argued ideas and opinion pieces, not yet in the
scope of a research contribution (6-8 pages)
- Resource paper: New dataset or other resources directly relevant to
Wikidata, including the publication of that resource (8-12 pages)
- Demo paper: New system critically enabled by Wikidata (6-8 pages)
Submissions must be as PDF or HTML, formatted in the style of the Springer
Publications format for Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS). For
details on the LNCS style, see Springer’s Author Instructions.
The papers will be peer-reviewed by at least three researchers. Accepted
papers will be published as open access papers on CEUR (we will only
publish to CEUR if the authors agree to have their papers published).
Papers have to be submitted through easychair:
https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=wikidataworkshop21
== Proceedings ==
The complete set of papers will be published with the CEUR Workshop
Proceedings (CEUR-WS.org).

Dear all,
Do you care about safety, inclusivity, and friendliness in the Wikimedia
movement? Are you interested in the guidelines and policies that guide it?
Do you have any experience with how they are applied? Do you have ideas
about well-functioning enforcement pathways in general? This is your chance
to get involved!
We are looking for volunteers to join the Drafting Committee for the
guidelines of enforcement for the Universal Code of Conduct. If you are
interested, please read the following important information for candidates
and our essay on an ideal committee
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Drafting_committe…
>
[1].
-
Who will be on the committee? - eight or nine volunteers, two or three
affiliate staff members, and three or four Foundation staff members
(depending on how many candidates apply)
-
When will the committee be active? - April 26 - November 30, 2021.
Please be aware that we will prioritize a comprehensive community review
over a hard deadline, so the active period for the committee might get
extended. There will be a break in Committee duties for a rest period
while
community discussions are active. For a more detailed timeline see here
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Drafting_committe…
>
[2].
-
What will they do? Understand the current Universal Code of Conduct
<https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct> [3].
Read background material and draft the enforcement strategies for the
Universal Code of Conduct that will outline pathways of implementation.
See
more information here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct> [4].
-
How will they work? They will meet online and work on shared documents.
A facilitation team will help them to organize the work, and experts in
different areas will be available to provide support. Sessions will
include
a combination of teamwork and asynchronous work and will have elements of
multimedia, facilitated activities, discussion and collaborative work.
-
How much time should I plan to spend per week? There will be online
meetings (1-2 hours per week), as well as background reading in the early
phases resulting in up to 5-8 hours each week. There will be a full break
and a period of reduced activity over the summer. For more details see
the
timeline here
<
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct/Drafting_committe…
>
[2].
-
What skills should I bring to the process? Ideally you would have
experience in policy drafting as well as in the application of policies
and
enforcement of rules, experience in cooperating online and in writing in
English. We would also love our candidates to have empathy; for example,
experience in mentoring, resolving difficult disputes, and communicating
with compassion are valuable. Experience applying a trauma-informed lens
and working within anti-racist and anti-oppresisve frameworks would be
highly valued.
-
How will the committee members be selected? The Trust and Safety Team
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Trust_and_Safety> [5] together
with the Legal
Team <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Legal> [6] of the Wikimedia
Foundation will vet all candidates. Then, the Vice president of Community
Resilience and Sustainability, Maggie Dennis
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Mdennis_(WMF)> [7], will choose
committee members based on the level of skills and experience of
candidates
in combination with diversity factors.
If you are interested in applying, please let us know before April 19 by
signing up below or mail to Christel Steigenberger
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/CSteigenberger_(WMF)>
[8].
Please include your username and link to your userpage of your home wiki
and provide links demonstrating your experience. Let us know about the
roles you hold or held in Wikimedia or similar organizations. Feel free to
add any additional information that will help us make an informed choice.
Please forward this message to any volunteers or affiliate staff members
you think might be interested, and encourage them to apply and help us
spread the word. We also welcome your help translating this message on meta

Hello;
Hope this email finds you well.
As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of
Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot
be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and
enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear
definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in
a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of
conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their
deficiencies, if any.
In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your
ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and
enforcement pathways using this survey:
