Subject: Small wiki toolkits <> South Asia
Hello Rehman,
Greetings! I hope this email finds you well.
We are reaching out to seek your collaboration on Small wiki toolkits<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits> (SWT), a technical capacity building initiative for smaller language wikis. This initiative runs with support from the Wikimedia Foundation's Developer Advocacy team and volunteers.
As part of the Small wiki toolkits initiative, earlier this year, Indic-TechCom<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Indic-TechCom>, in collaboration with WMF's Developer Advocacy team, designed and conducted a technical workshop series: "Small wiki toolkits - Indic workshop series 2020". Here is a detailed report on meta-wiki: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/SWT_Indic_Workshop_Series_2020/Report.
Community members found these workshops super useful and helpful in developing their technical skills and their wiki communities' growth. So, we are now planning to continue running these workshops (one per month) and expand them to the Wikimedia communities in the South Asian region.
We are currently reaching out to various groups who may be potentially involved and you, especially as an experienced organizer. We would like like to hear from you:
* How does the overall idea sound to you?
* Would a format like the one for the Indic workshop series work for your community? What would you like to change?
* Would you be interested in joining these efforts? It may be, on average, an hour every week of commitment, at max, three hours per week when most planning happens.
If you do not have the time to take this on, would you be willing to connect us with someone in your community who can provide input and be interested in joining?
Hoping to hear from you soon!
Best,
SWT Indic workshop series team

Hello;
My name is Mervat, and I am helping the Trust and Safety team to reach out
to affiliates in order to discuss the Universal Code of Conduct.
There has been talks about the need for a global set of conduct rules in
different communities over time, and finally, Wikimedia Foundation Board
announced a Community Culture Statement, enacting new standards to address
harassment and promote inclusivity across projects.
Since the universal code of conduct that will be a binding minimum set of
standards across all Wikimedia projects, will apply to all of us, staff and
volunteers alike, all around the globe, and will impact our work as groups,
individuals and projects, it’s of great importance that we all participate
in expressing our opinions and thoughts about UCoC, its nature, what we
think it should cover or include and what it shouldn’t include; how it may
develop, drawback or help our groups.
This is the time to talk about it. As you are a valuable contributor to the
Wikimedia movement, your voice counts. Before starting to draft the code of
conduct, we would like to hear from you; We invite you to devote some
minutes to take this survey; your answers will help us create a safer
environment for all on Wikimedia:
(English):
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd36dNdU3C5shXEkKp9itJOhuCTx9hZE5A…
<https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd36dNdU3C5shXEkKp9itJOhuCTx9hZE5A…>
It’s possible that you are a member of more than one affiliate; hence you
may receive this survey more than once, and you may have participated
previously in the discussions or filled out a previous survey during the
first round of consultations about UCoC which targeted wikipedia/wikimedia
communities. We apologize for this; it is really difficult to identify if a
wikimedian belongs to multiple groups that work to spread free knowledge.
Looking forward to your thoughts and opinions and hoping that you can
respond within the next 2 weeks. If you have any questions about the
surveys or difficulties accessing the link, please contact me by email (
msalman-ctr(a)wikimedia.org)
Results will be considered during the drafting process for the UCoC
Thank you for your participation

Hello,
Today the Wikimedia Foundation would like to introduce a new community
blog. It's called "Diff" (diff.wikimedia.org) and is a blog by – and
for – the Wikimedia volunteer community to connect and share
learnings, stories, and ideas from across our movement. We'd like to
encourage you to learn more about Diff and how it can help you in
sharing and learning from your fellow Wikimedians.
Everyone is invited to contribute!
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2020/07/14/welcome-to-diff-a-community-blog-for-…
The name “Diff” is in reference to the wiki interface that displays
the difference between one version and another of a Wikipedia page. It
also reflects the “difference” our communities and movement make in
the world every day.
For some background, Diff builds on lessons and experiences from the
Wikimedia Blog, the Wikimedia Foundation News, and Wikimedia Space;
previous posts from these channels are archived on Diff. The channel
is primarily intended for community-authored posts, in which
volunteers can share their stories, learnings, and ideas with each
other.
Diff offers a simple and accessible editorial process, moderated by
Foundation communications staff and open to volunteers, to encourage
participation from all — especially emerging and under-represented
communities. Additionally, content on Diff can be written and
translated into languages to reach a wide audience. Diff also has a
code of conduct and comments can be flagged and moderated.
Still curious to learn more?

Dear Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka,
We are inviting you to participate in Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP)
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos>, a new
global contest scheduled to run from July through August 2020:
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos>
Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photo images, then
add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the
Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki
Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years.
WPWP offers a focused task for guiding new editors through the steps of
adding content to existing pages. It can be used to organize editing
workshops and edit-a-thons.
The organizing team is looking for a contact person at the Wikimedia User
Group level (geographically or thematically) or for a language WP, to
coordinate the project locally. We’d be glad for you to reply to this
email, or sign up directly at WPWP Participating Communities

Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is currently in the process of establishing a Universal Code of Conduct. Below is direct quote from the UCoC team.
If you would like to share your views (especially those from the Sinhala and Tamil projects), please do let me know directly, and I will share your contact details with them.
Thanks!
I want to talk to you about the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Universal_Code_of_Conduct). You may also access this presentation to get a quick idea about what UCoC plans to do and achieve (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1mNVLIz9pmS_7JdlELYnzV7NcUGmQklX8MIv…).
While we have always adhered to high standards of content policies on our projects, we have often struggled around maintaining civility. There have been numerous incidents where our contributors have faced abuse, harassment, or suffered from uncivil behaviours of others. Because of such an unfriendly atmosphere, many users have stopped contributing to Wikimedia projects, and thus, we have missed out on important knowledge. One of the many reasons for this has been a lack of behavioural guidelines in many of our projects.
Universal Code of Conduct aims to cover such gaps. The idea behind Universal Code of Conduct is to harmonize the already existing behavioural guidelines on various projects and collectively create a standard set of behavioural policies that are going to be binding throughout the movement. These will be equally applicable to all the projects, all the community members, and all the staff members. The UCoC project is an outcome of the Movement Strategy Recommendations, with support from the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees.
What do we need to find out:
1) What are the major challenges that your community is facing with respect to behavioural issues in the projects?
2) How do they usually resolve those issues? Have the policies been useful?
3) How do they feel about having a universal code of conduct?
4) What are their major concerns?
5) Things that your community wants to see in a Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC).
6) Things that your community does not want to see in a UCoC.
The project highly depends on ideas and feedback from the community. I want to talk to the members of Tamil Wikipedia communities to obtain their feedback so that this can be factored into the existing UCoC. We understand that it is extremely difficult to have a ‘universal’ set of values that are representative of all the cultures and communities, however, it is definitely possible to come up with a basic set of guidelines that can ensure that we have a safe space for everyone to be able to contribute. Through this consultation, you can influence the language and content of the code of conduct and contribute to leading the movement to make it a harassment-free space.
I would be very grateful if you agree to speak with me. Additionally, if you can put me in touch with some of the active members of Tamil Wikipedia communities who would be interested in speaking with me about issues mentioned above, that would be very helpful.
Yours truly,
Rehman<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rehman>
Hello everyone,
It's that time of the year again!
In May and June, the international photo competition Wiki Loves Earth<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2020> will take place once again. In a nutshell, WLE is a global contest to encourage volunteers from all over the world to upload high quality freely licensed photographs to Commons, so that the quality images could be reused by Wikimedia projects (and others) to improve articles and other content.
If you would like to volunteer for this event, please express your interest or ask questions on this project page<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Sri_Lanka/Ev…>. If you have any questions or clarifications before committing, please feel free to ask here on this email thread, on the usergroup talkpage<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Community_User_Group_Sri_Lan…>, or via a private email to me
Thank you!
P.s. Our 2020 landing page is still being worked on. I will update again once that is complete.
Yours truly,
Rehman<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Rehman>

Subject: [Wikimedia-l] Movement Strategy: Last chance to review the recommendations, next steps
Hi everyone,
We’re in week 4 of community conversations about the movement strategy
recommendations. Thank you to everyone who has already taken part. The
community conversations will continue until Friday, February 21 - you
can get involved on Meta[1] in Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi,
Spanish, and Portuguese, strategize with your community or
organization, or send the core team your feedback to
strategy2030(a)wikimedia.org.
This current round of community conversations is the last opportunity
to suggest improvements to the recommendations. They will be finalized
before the end of March, and then published for the movement to
understand them, reflect on what they mean in their project, local, or
thematic context, and move into implementation.
== Movement feedback: what happens next ==
All feedback is being collected, reviewed and analyzed on an ongoing
basis. Here are the next steps after February 21:
* Week commencing February 24: the core team will summarize all the
feedback received in a report. You are welcome to continue commenting
and discussing during this time, but the discussions will not be as
closely facilitated and documented.
* Week commencing March 2: the core team will publish the above report
on Meta to give the movement an opportunity to review the content and
give feedback as to whether it accurately reflects their input. The
closing date for this is March 6. This summary report will then be
finalized and published.
In mid-March, the feedback from the Board of Trustees, movement
conversations and reviewers' input will be considered in the creation
of the final, improved set of recommendations. A rationale for things
that have not been considered will be provided, too. Our aim is to
have the recommendations finalized and published in late March. More
about the actual integration work coming soon.
== Video and podcast about our work; one-pager ==
Members of the core team - Tanveer Hasan, Information and Knowledge
Liaison, and Mehrdad Pourzaki, Information and Knowledge Manager -
recently held a presentation about all the recommendations at the
Wikimedia Foundation All Hands. They provide a quick, concise overview
of every recommendation and also some insight into how each was
developed. Video of the presentation [2] and the presentation slides
[3] are now on Commons.
Jan Ainali has interviewed me for his podcast Wikipedia Podden. I’m
speaking with him about the past, present and future of movement
strategy[4].
The one-pager created by Andrew Lih (User:Fuzheado) has been very
popular. Again, a big thank you to Andrew for putting this together.
In addition to Arabic, English, and Hindi versions, it is now also
available in Farsi [5, 6].
== Meeting notes from the office hours ==
We have published a condensed summary of the meeting notes [7] from
the office hours that were held by the core team on Thursday, January
30. The notes provide an overview of the key points and questions that
were raised during the two calls as well as summaries of the
responses.
== Do you have further questions? ==
Members of the core team will join the upcoming Wikimedia Café on
February 15 [8], which will focus on the movement strategy
recommendations. The Wikimedia Café is a community-led meeting hosted
by User:Pine and User:Bluerasberry, and we are happy to take part and
help answer any questions people may have about the recommendations.
Additionally, if you are looking for more information about any of the
above topics or about the movement strategy in general, take a look at
our FAQ section [9].
Happy weekend,
Nicole

Hello everyone,
Cross-posting here for now; only FYI.
If you are interested in volunteering, please stay tuned! I will send further information in about 2 weeks.
For this year, I am hoping to broaden our scope to encourage more participation by having separate awards for the best in select categories (landscapes, animals, etc).
More information to come!

Subject: [Wikilovesearth] Wiki Loves Earth 2020: A First Call for Local Organizers
Dear colleagues,
The international team is pleased to announce Wiki Loves Earth 2020 — the 7th edition of Wiki Loves Earth international photo contest. As always, it will take place throughout May and June.
This letter is a brief update for potential local organizers of WLE 2020.
(Just a quick reminder: Wiki Loves Earth is a federative contest which is coordinated by an international team but organized in each country by a dedicated local team, typically consisting of volunteers).
The international team will be providing more information about Wiki Loves Earth 2020 within the following weeks, but, overall, the structure of the contest has not changed. If you are familiar with the process, you can start adding your country to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2020/Participat….
If you have not organized Wiki Loves Earth in your country before but are looking to organize one, please check our guide for local organizers (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2020/Organise) and/or email us at wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua<mailto:wle-team@wikimedia.org.ua>
An important thing which you should start thinking about now is financing your contest. If your organization does not have an annual budget with Wiki Loves Earth included, you might want to apply for a rapid grant from the Wikimedia Foundation to cover for the expenses of Wiki Loves Earth in your country (up to 2,000 USD).
In 2020, proposals for Wiki Loves Earth are accepted between March 1st and March 15th; it is strongly advised you submit one within this timeframe (though you can and should start planning it earlier).
Learn more at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Wiki_Loves_Earth_2020/Organise#F…
We will try and provide more detailed instructions about preparing your grant application in February.
If you have any questions or need assistance, we would be glad to help! Please email us at wle-team(a)wikimedia.org.ua<mailto:wle-team@wikimedia.org.ua>
P.S. We sent out a feedback form to all local organizers of Wiki Loves Earth 2019. If you have not received a letter from us, please contact us so we can resend it :)
