Hello all -
Thanks to Rehman suggesting that I subscribe to the mailing list so that I can extend this invitation to the Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka.
My name is Eddie Avila with Global Voices <https://globalvoices.org/about/>, a network of writers, translators, activists, and community leaders from around the world. Every two years our volunteer community comes together to meet as a way to plan our future. In addition, to this community meeting, we hold a public conference with the participation of local netizens to explore the connections between the open internet, freedom of expression, digital inclusion, and virtual movements around the world.
This year on December 2-3, our Summit brings us to Colombo’s Trace Expert City. An important element of all our Summits, which in past years have taken us to the Philippines, Kenya, Chile, Hungary, and India, is building partnerships with local groups.
Here is the Summit website (in progress): https://summit2017.globalvoices.org/ <https://summit2017.globalvoices.org/>
We consider the Wikimedia community to be an important partner to invite to not only take part as attendees, but also to take an active role in the program. In addition to an open invitation to sign up as attendees, I would like to invite the Wikimedia Community User Group Sri Lanka to present some of your current projects and possibly run a short introductory editing workshop in our interactive workshop spaces. For those able to run these workshops or presentations, we can offer complimentary passes for the two-day Summit.
Finally, Global Voices has a longtime relationship with the Wikimedia movement, having several community members in common such as Hasive from Wikimedia Bangaldesh, Subhashish from Wikimedia Odia, and Satdeep Gill is helping to start up a Global Voices Punjabi project. My project, Rising Voices, recently was awarded a Project Grant <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:Project/Global_Voices/Strengthening_…> to run a research project on indigenous languages on Wikipedia.
I hope that you will consider taking part in the Summit, and I’ll be happy to answer any questions you may have and coordinate with members of your community interested in running a workshop or two, as well as to take part in the two-day Summit. Please write to me if you are interested so that we can start coordinating!
Thanks!
Eddie

Subject: We are almost there: New version of the strategic direction draft is waiting for your comments
Dear all,
The strategy team has now published an updated version that integrates
the comments and feedback you all have provided over the last couple
of weeks. Please share the draft within your organizations, groups and
communities and take the chance to comment on it.
We are moving closer to the final version of the direction, and now
expect to make only minor changes to the current version. But there's
still time for you to make your voices heard and help shape
Wikimedia’s future!
Here’s the new draft:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy/Wikimedia_movement/2017/Direction
The text of the direction has been changed, and so have parts of the
reasoning and implications. Luckily, Mediawiki shows us each edit and
makes the differences visible.[1]
https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Strategy%2FWikimedia_movement%…
Please leave your comments on the talk page of the direction[2], or
create a source page for your input.[3]
We are not only aiming for broad acceptance of the final direction,
but really for enthusiasm, commitment and agreement that this is the
right way for us all to move forward together. Please prepare your
organization or group for the upcoming endorsement: In October, we
will ask all of you – and individual contributors – to endorse the
strategic direction. The process is still being set up and I will
share more details as soon as we have it finalized.
Thank you all for your support and engagement.
Nicole
